What do you think? Good idea or bad?

I think it has some huge pros eg: reducing the number of unplanned pregnancies, but there's the risk of girls using it as a contraceptive too....

Yep i agree people do use it as contraception but at least they use contraception, you just need ot look at teeneage pregnancy rates to see that that message doesn't get accross, (no offence intended to the young mums on here at all). Make it available to those who want to use it, but also the message on safe sex (talking STI and unplanned pregnancy) needs to be made stronger too.

yeah they reckon it will take teen pregnancy rates down but STD's will go higher and the lady said 'anything that removes the barriers is good' umm nope..not in my book anyway:( and I'm not a prude and I've made stupid mistakes...i also know a person who stayed pregnant after taking it :(

but the problem is most people are educated..they just cant be bothered:(

I wish it wasn't just up there! I think it's an awesome idea! I don't think its going to encourage girls to go out and have unprotected sex just cause they know its more freely available now.

When I had to get it last month I got a 10 minute "interview" with the pharmist and I got specifically asked if I had taken it within the last 6 months and told various reasons why you should not take it more than once within 6 months. I don't imagine they will stop advising people of this sort of thing. Plus your name and address etc is recorded when you get it.

I hope the trial is successful!

I think it's a great idea. A lot of the reaction to it (don't mean here!) seems to focus around it encouraging teenage promiscurity - it's not just teenagers who have "accidents" - I've needed it several times in the 10 years I've been with my DH. If better access to it reduced unwanted pregnancies then that can only be a positive thing.

I think all women should have access to free and confidential birth control and access to information so they can make an informed choice.

I'm in favour too - there are always going to be people who use it as a form of birth control whether they have to pay for it or not, but by making it available free of charge they are increasing the number of people who potentially have access to it, and that includes the majority of the population who don't see it as a license to be promiscous. If it prevents just one unwanted pregnancy then IMO that makes it worthwhile - I have seen far too many neglected and damaged children who's parents simply didn't even want them to start with.
My sister has a friend who has had 6 terminations. Now that says a lot about her character in itself, but had the ECP been more readily available to her she might not have ended up in that situation in the first place.
I think that rather than criticising the "ambulance at the bottom of the cliff" measures like the ECP, we should be more focussed on educating our kids about safe sex, and more importantly, instilling in them the values that make them want more from their lives that promiscuity and early sexual activity.

It's not really about the different partners tho in this instance, you can just as easily fall pregnant with the SAME partner if you are slack about contraception, altho I guess the difference there is that if you are in a relationship and find yourself unexpectedly pregnant there are a different set of considerations to if you are single.

i guess its also for me that they are babies as soon as conceived so maybe thats why i see it differently..?:)
