Topic: C-Section & Infections Posted: 20 May 2008 at 9:27pm |
Before you read on please be aware that I in no way want to put anyone off a C-section and if I was to become pregnant again this wouldn't put me off having another one... I'm just trying to find out more information on how others coped with similar issues.
Well alot of you know that I had a c-section with my lovely son Ethan just over 3 weeks ago... however I've been missing in action since he was a week old as I got an infection, we were in hospital for 15 days, got out this afternoon, and man I feel like I've been through the winger.
I've had two more operations, one slightly opening up the c-section wound and cleaning it out, and the other completely opening it and having a vaccum dressing attached which I will continue to wear for up to another 4 weeks with my stomach being left open (the top layer and fatty layer) to close/heal on it's own...
Has anyone else been through this??? I had every midwife on the ward look at my wound and dresses etc as they hadn't seen anything as bad as this before in there time on the materinty ward.
I feel so hopeless as I can't even burp my baby after a feed without a stuggle in case he kicks my stomach. I'm having to rely on others to do simple tasks to take care of him.
Does anyone have any previous experiance that would be of some help/comfort?
With my last c-section I was nearly back to normal 3 weeks after birth...

So sorry you are going through this Danielle, I know with a straight forward CS it was hard enough to do simple tasks so I can't begine to imagine what you are going through.
No advice here I'm afraid just a hug and I hope you recover soon

My SIL went thru something similar. Her wound became really badly infected and actually ruptured open with blood and pus everywhere at about 7 days post C Section.
She ended up having it cleaned and restitched but not surgery or the type of dressing you had. She was on AB's for at least 4 weeks. I think this was partly because she refused to stay in hosp - after getting it restitched - and discharged herself to be looked after by her MW (who visited every 2nd day for the first 8 weeks) and her Mum (retored MW)
She reckons that it took her til about 10 weeks until she felt "normal" again. She also had everyone doing most things for here for this time - bar feeding the bubba she did very little as couldn't.
She is really put off having more children as she has a condition that means she has to have a c section and has no choice so is really nervous about anymore.

Oh Danielle - I'm so sorry to hear this. Last thing you need with a new baby and a toddler.
I can't help much as mine was very textbook but big hugs. I hope it all heals up well now.

Gosh Peanut... 10 weeks??? that's the rest of my maternity leave.
I'm glad I spent the two weeks in hospital and hopefully the AB's work tomorrows my last dose.

Yeah, fingers crossed for you. I am guessing that as yours has been done "properly" it should be quicker. Maybe look into ACC to get extend time off with pay as it could possibly be covered.

I really feel for you, my cs got infected and had an overnight stay on drips etc but the only other problem was being told different things about the drugs and whether or not I should breastfeed, can't imagine how you are feeling at all.
Just hang in there and I hope you heal well from now on.
Hugs to you

I am so sorry to hear you have gone through this.
I had an infection in my wound and was bed ridden for 2 weeks, but nothing like you.
I am sorry I have no advise, some some
