story
First I had heard of infections in the neonatal unit.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

Awful isn't it! There was a V & D bug when Ash was in NICU but luckily she didn't catch it. But because the babies that are in there all have very low immunity, if any at all, then it is quite easy to pass bugs to them from the parents/visitors. I would get sooo angry when ignorant/rude people would come in to visit and they were coughing and snotting everywhere.

It's not the first time a baby has died either, a baby died in Waikato Hospital NICU back in 2004 from an infection from non-sterile infant formula. it wouldn't normally make a baby sick but micropremmies just don't have the immune systems to fight it

hence why we now have policies in place that no baby is put onto powdered formula until just before they are about to go home - and only so they can transition over to what's going to be used at home.
Unfortunately bugs like that are soooo easily passed around in the NNU unless you're really carefull with handling and hygeine, and staph infections are really quite common - especially sticky eyes etc. Just think, most are in a nice warm humid environment, their immune systems are really immature and any little thing can grow so nicely in the warm conditions.
You'll probably remember a few years back that wellington nnu had that superbug there. We isolate and swab all our babies when they transfer from anywhere to test and make sure they're not bringing in any nasties.
