Does anyone know much about animal allergies, in particular dogs?
We went to my Bro and SILs yesterday and we hadn't been there long when Jack started to get a few spots, kind of like itchy bites around his eyes and cheeks. I thought that it could have been the dog as he came right up to Jack when we arrived. PLus it has happened a few times in the past but we have never really known if it was the dog or not.
Jack had his nap shortly after and by the time he woke up the spots were pretty much gone.
We kept Jack away from the dog for the rest of the visit but not long before we left Jack ended up with a big red patch and more spots on his cheek. I didn't see it but DH thinks the dog licked him.
It is not major as we don't go there more that 2-3 times a month and we can keep Jack away from the dog as much as poss when we are there, but how do I find out if he is allergic to the dog? I am not sure either if it is the dog's fur, his saliva or something he has brushed against that Jack is allergic to. We have cats and Jack has no probs with them.
I think they can skin prick test for animal allergies, so you could ask your gp for a referal or you might just be able to pay for it. Medlab etc do the testing.
We have a friend who is allergic to cats, his eyes normally get red and itchy and puffy. We have a few cats and sometimes he is affected when he visits depending on how close the cats get, they seem to gravitate towards him.
I think with animals it is normally the fur that people are allergic too, cats, dogs or horses are the normal culprits and you can be allergic to just one and fine with the others.
Alize tested positvie with a severe animal dander allergy. He has never had any reactions that I have noticed but in saying that if he is scratched by a cat it turns into welts all over the limb effected. The paed said it is the mostly likely cause of his asthma as well as his dustmite allergy.
