Topic: Hes got an inhaler :( Posted: 29 October 2008 at 4:55pm |
so poor toby started to feel ill yesterday afternoon and by bedtime was very chesty and his breathing sounded laboured. so i took him to the docs this afternoon and after listening to his chest he gave him some ventolin and then had a re listen. he said it made a difference so prescribed some ventolin to take home.
poor wee chap is so not happy!!! mind he was happy as larry about ten mins or so after the ventolin at the docs. it was amazing the difference! the nurse did give oxygen with it tho as she said his levels were a bit low.

It's ok, calm down, breathe through it........
Paris has 2 inhalers which she mostly needs during winter and change of season which is what you may find is affecting toby. The main thing to remember is get him to sit up nice and straight, and breathe deeply - 5 breathes to each puff. I take it they gave hima spacer.
Paris doesn't like the mask so now knows how to use her spacer without one but a trick i found for difficult kids is use the mask, and get them to sing nice and loudly because it makes them breathe lovely and deeply to get the ventolin in well.
good luck, hope he feels better soon.

Ella's had one this winter too. She's never had one before so it freaked me out a bit having one. It really did help though and she liked having it. She wasn't such a fan of the nebuliser though!

Ooh, I like the singing idea. Taine occasionally needs an inhaler too and it is NOT nice. But also not necessarily permanent too.

This gave me a bit of a shock when Kryssi was prescribed with an inhaler this year too. She has a spacer with mask and actually loves it! We have to snatch the jolly thing off her LOL! She really only seems to need it when she gets a cold, especially to help her sleep through the night.

As a child I had inhalers to use as needed (when I had a cold) and I still use them occasionally now as an adult (but rarely get sick now). When I DO get sick (cold etc) I get a bad cough that hangs around for ages (and keeps me awake all hours) and the inhalers help with that.
It's not been a big thing for me personally (having inhalers) as I've only needed them occasionally - still been able to play lots of sports etc - so don't worry about your little man!

Scary! Hope he's doing ok now? He doesn't have pneumonia or something?
Maya had an inhaler when she had croup, getting it into her was great fun But she's never needed one since.

Did the doctor say Toby has asthma? Or just prescribed it for this illness he has at the moment? If its going to be a long term thing I'd recommend making an appointment with your asthma nurse or society and making an asthma plan. Its great for knowing and managing the triggers and getting a child's asthma into control.
My daughter has had asthma inhailers since she was about 10 months old and apart from when she gets ill with a cold etc her asthma is very controlled.
She doesn't like the nebuliser either, I find reading her a book helps distract her when she has to have one.
Good luck.

the doc listened to his chest for ages and i got a bit worried then too... and he'd been making funny noises all day...i think tho it was cause he found he could ...
gave him the inhaler tonight before bed and he was so brave and acted like a pro with it. oh and gabriel was so sweet and encouraging which was nice.

I've learnt that the best way to tell if they're having trouble breathing is to watch their tummy when they breathe, if it sucks in under the ribs then that's a sign that they're having to work quite hard at it. It's been quite useful to know coz sometimes lil miss *sounds* really scary with wheezing and grunting but there's no indrawing so she's obviously getting plenty of air in and out.

Glad he was more confident to take the inhaler. Is can be scary first time huh esp for a young one faced with the mask part of the inhaler.
Alize uses his spacer without the mask and I count the 6 breaths with the sound of the valve moving when he takes the breath. He has learnt very fast that the "breather" we call it helps him. Sounds like if Toby is happy with the mask to keep it on but just letting you know that it can also be done without it.
I hope he is feeling better
