Hi,
after trying gaviscon (not much help) and ranitidine (helpful for a few weeks) we have just started Amelia (17 weeks) on Omeprazole. I'm still trialling to see if half in morning half in afternoon or all in afternoon works best for her. She still seems to be waking in pain, but I will give it a few more days to see if it settles. Does anyone have any advice on which was best for them? Our specialist said it was up to us.

Also, when Amelia spills after having the meds she sometimes has little purple spheres in her sick. Has anyone else experienced this with their baby?
Anna

I take it she is on granules? I have heard the purple spheres are normal for those having the granules instead of the liquid (granules are supposed to be better).

Jackson has his omeprazole in morning and evening. He initially just had it in the morning but by the end of the day he was aggravated again.

Oh, ps.... come chat with us in the September 08 thread. There's a whole bunch of lovely ladies in there, and there are a few of us with reflux babies too.

Hope the omeprazole helps wee Amelia.

I've heard that the omeprazole granules are up to 20% more effective than the suspension. We are using the suspension and it is working well (when she doesn't throw it up!). Isobelle is on 2mls twice a day and she is only 12 weeks old, is that a lot? Im wondering if the granules are more effective if we would be able to give her less.

Thanks kiwilaurie, that's helpful.
I'm not sure if 2ml is a lot. Amelia is taking 10mg a day. I'm not sure how many mg of the drug would be in the suspension.

We are having terrible sleeping issues with Amelia. I was hoping the omeprazole would be a magic cure! Ha! Now she has the bad habits ingrained! I just don't know what to do now!

We had terrible sleeping issue with Dominic, it is such hard work. If she is not in any discomfort and it is just sleeping issues now there is quite a bit you can do but no magic cure sorry
I wish there was you could make millions!
One thing I learnt with Dom was that it takes 3 days to form a habit and 17ish days to break it. We are so lucky in Hamilton we have the Family Centre, a group of ex midwives and plunket nurses who help families with feeding and sleeping issues. They are reflux experts too. Ive been there with both babies. For our sleeping issues with Dom they found the sorce, which was my milk supply, fixed that and then worked on the habits. What they had me do was a feed, play, sleep routine (not for everyone but worked for us). He was only up for an hour or til he started to show tired signs. Then we had to develop sleep associations (other than you or DH). For Dom we did nappy change, story, wrap, dummy and place him in his cot. If he cried we went back in resettled him, rewrap if necessary (he was such a hodini!) and quietly leave again. If he really lost the plot we sometimes had to pick him up and comfort him but always put him back in the cot before he was completely asleep. We often had to stay with him for a while and slowly start ease away and leave the room. It took a while but it is a gentle way to teaching them to go to sleep. I never felt comfortable with control crying and there is lots of research suggesting that it is inappropriate for a baby under 6 months as well, and especially reflux babies. There is tons of methods to teach babies to sleep out there which Im sure you are aware of. Because you know your baby better than anyone I would read up on a few different ones and take what you like and what you think will suit Amelia (love the name by the way) and go with that. Just be prepared for it to take a while to work.

Thanks Saffron. We've tried quite a few methods and do stick to the feed, play, sleep routine and always put her down awake. she used to be quite good but has gotten worse and worse (almost daily the battle seems to last longer). She just doesn't seem to want to go to bed (ever!)

I try bathing her and giving her a massage before her night sleep but this doesn't seem to relax her. The opposite in fact. she starts squealing and getting very chatty, especially towards the end of the massage when she knows it's time for bed! Little monkey!

I also don't feel comfortable with leaving her to cry. She seems to have learned that we will come back in if her dummy comes out and cries so she pulls it out as soon as it goes in! So I've tried to settle her without a dummy but it is horrific! She in inconsolable without it! She is so hooked on the dummy that she wakes up in the night when it comes out so as a consequence she has only ever slept through the night once (and I happened to have a tummy bug at the time so wasn't sleeping myself!) Usually we get up to her about 4-6 times a night. I would love to wean her off the dummy but I'm not sure if she still needs it to help soothe the reflux. I'm still not convinced the omperazole is working.

Plunket have a family centre here (in chch), but it is only for day time and although she doesn't really sleep during the day, the real issues are at night. I went there to help with the reflux. I might need to go back to see what they can do with the sleeping problems. I'm getting very tired!

You must be exhausted! I think it would still be worth going to see your Family Centre because if she doesn't get enough sleep in the day she will be overtired and unable to settle at night. Babies are the opposite of us, the more they sleep during the day the better they sleep at night. It could be that her omperazole dose needs to be reviewed. Is she feeding well? When Dominic started doing the same thing it was my milk supply.
If you are really desparate you could ask if your maternity unit runs a mothercraft centre, they do sleep training and it is a full day/night thing. My plunket nurse suggested it for Dominic and I never went because I was scared they would force control crying on me, as it turns out they work with what you want to do but they also let you get some sleep.

Hi

Jayden has been on losec granules since he was 5 weeks old and is on about 15mg a day 1 capsule in the morning and 1/2 in the afternoon, it doesnt stop him spilling but stops the burning and results in a much happier baby! it can take days to weeks to kick in depending on how much damage has been done! check out the crying with spilt milk website dedicated to child reflux www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz (I think?) the purple things that bubs brings up are the granules....and the suspension is less effective I hope it kicks in soon for you!

We had a great night last night. Amelia slept through the night!! And without her dummy! Amazing. I'm hoping it will happen again tonight. She has been so much better today. I've reverted to giving her all the omeprazole in the afternoon. Splitting it didn't seem to work for her. It may be that she needs another 5mg in the morning. I will wait and see how she goes for a while and speak to the specialist.
It's amazing how much better you feel after a good nights sleep!
