Topic: Antenatal Classes- The Hutt Posted: 07 April 2009 at 11:44am |
Hi All,
I figured i better start thinking about these are have a few descions to make. just wanting some recomendations really.
We have been given 3 numbers....
One for the free Hutt hospital ones (Birth Ed) - are these any good, what about getting a coffee group out of them? I figure cos they are free they are more likely to have younger people in them (we are 23 and 25)
Parents centre Lower Hutt - Do you pay for these? are they better to go to?
Or the last one is Birth Power which i know you have to pay $160 for. My friend went to these and said that every one was older and sort of looked down on them for starting a family younger. Not sure i want to pay for something that may make me feel uncomfotable when this baby is very muct planned.
Any suggestions would be great.... TIA!!!

parents centre, i cant recommend them enough. they are $210 but that includes a years subscription to their magazine and you also have access to heaps and heaps of early childhood/ breastfeeding/ developement classes for about $5 each or something.
they dont have a stance on naturel/assisted births but give you all the options and let you go with whatever you feel comfortable. i have hadd 3 friends go to the hospital and they all said they were awful, dont know why but its why i didnt go through them. i love parents centre anyway and the classes are run from waiwhetu uniting so pretty local from most places in the hutt.
hope this helps :)

Hey Hannah, we went to Birth Power (albeit after Chelsea was already born as I signed up late and she came early, lol) and found the classes really useful. Rebecca, the lady who takes them, is lovely, she even helped me with my breastfeeding technique as I was finding it really painful No one was judgemental in my class, and there were a mix of age groups.
Hope that helps (I haven't been to parents centre or the free hospital ones though so can't compare).

Another vote for Parents Centre here. I had the same thought about the hospital classes (at the time, I was 22 and DH 27) but I was a little judgmental about the type of people that would be at the free classes so we opted to go to Parents Centre. I think I was one of the youngest and the rest of the mums extended out to 40 years old. The best thing about it is that we still occasionally get together or bump into each other!
Our Parents Centre organised the first coffee group and we just kept it up weekly while the babies were all still very small. I don't know if the hospital would do a similar thing.

I went through Vibe in the hutt for under 25. Birth Ed
Although the classes were great and really helpful & free, i found the other people were not as good.
I was 21 at the time but being in classes with 16 year olds were not my thing, id much rather talk with older people that were happy to be expecting children etc.
I know that sounds harsh but was how i felt.
I would also recommend the parents centre, i wish i had of paid for these classes and gone there now.
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy

I start my classes in two weeks time. I decided to go to the hospital ones as would rather spend the money on baby rather than a coffee group. i have lots of friends with babies or who are pregnant so not too fussed on it.
I did however specify that i wanted to be in the 24+ group as doing antenatal with 16-23 year olds (even tho i am 23) just seemed a bit young for me.

I am due in June and looking at classes were the hospital ones good? I am 24 and similiar to you would rather be with people my own age if possible. Though only have a few friends with babies so would be good to get to know some more people.

Hey Amy Congrats on the pregnancy.
Yip the hospital ones were fine and one year on I still catch up with my antenatal class from time to time. They were a really valuable bunch at the start when baby came! we ranged in age from 23-35.
I found the classes were ok, though could be quite funny about things like they discussed breast feeding but wouldnt talk about formula feeding or even expressing and feeding out of a bottle! But that could have been more the lactation consultant than anything else.
I definatly think for free is better then paying big bucks for the same info!

Hi AMy - birth power are no longer offering classes in the Hutt Valley - (they've transferred north).
We went through parents centre and it was great. The ages ranged from very young 20's (maybe even teenagers - I never asked) through to 40. The range of ages was really really good as we all had differing life experiences to bring to the table. I liked how parents centre "made" us have our first coffee group and then at that one guided us to our next meet up. 2.5 years down the track and 7 families still meet up very regualarly. I don't think the same can be said for the people I know who were due at the same time and did the hospital classes. The money was really worth it for me.
