Just wondering if anyone can recommend any good Swim Schools in Auckland, preferably South Auckland.
Our son is nearly 5 and can't swim yet as has been extremely nervous of water ie doesn't even like his hair being washed. But we would like to try him out with some lessons to get him used to the water. Swimming is not such a big deal where we come from (England) but it is for the beach lifestyle here.
We would like him to have lessons where they are quite sensitive to kids who are not naturally keen on water, so don't know whether a private swim school is best or just lessons at the local pool.
Its not in Sth Auckland, but I can recommend Trent Bray Swim School in Sandringham / Kingsland (just near Eden Park), they are great! Otherwise the Hilton Brown programme is good and they operate in Onehunga (which could be closer!).
on recommendation from a friend, we are enrolling our sons in a holiday programme rather than a weekly one. she said that the weekly ones are good, but quite often having a seven day or six day course, builds swimming skills much more quickly. Just a thought
Swim aquatica in East Tamaki. I have watched one teacher there taking kids that are terrified of waters into the water and by the 3rd lesson they are loving it.
My daughter use to swim with one of the other teachers on the other side of the pool and it would just amaze me seeing this one teacher working with the kids as well as the parents.
There was this one little boy that was literally crying and begging his mother not to do it to him (his first lesson.) The teacher was very gentle with him and for the first bit they just stuck their feet in the water and chatted and eventually he allowed her to take him for a ride in the water.
Second lesson he cried but she quickly got him in the water and by the third lesson he would get scared going under but he would still do it and then get up and be proud.
Just let them know that your child is a bit nervous and perhaps for the first few lessons pay for individual classes until he is comfortable with the water.
