Hi
DS was formula fed from 4 weeks. Right from when he started on formula, he became very mucusy, and always had a cough and runny nose. We took him to numerous gps in the area, they all told us the same thing, that his body would get over it. At 10 months old when he was cutting his first tooth he became very wheezy, and his cough got worse. we took him to the gp, who sent him home; once again telling us he would fight it off. 3 hours later we were in A&E, his 02 levels were at 70% and he was diagnosed with bronchiolitis. The paed commented on how chesty he was, they took a chest xray and decided he was ok. after 4 days in hospital on oxygen, IV fluids and steroids we could take him home, and he did get better. Although the mucus and horrible cough remained.
Between then and the age of 18 months, we were in hospital with him 3 more times, but each time we only spent 1 night in hospital. We didnt ever get an official diagnosis, they would just put him on the nebuliser, give him some steroids and he would come right. At 18 months they diagnosed him with asthma, gave us an inhaler and spacer, and that was that. At that time, we stopped giving him formula, cut out all dairy and started giving him rice milk to see if we could help the asthma. All mucus has cleared up, he doesnt have his nasty cough and is definitely a lot healthier. We have never had to use his inhaler.
DD2 is now 9 months old. We are going through the exact same thing with her. Once I stopped exclusively BF at 6 months old, she developed the same mucus and cough problem. I don't eat much dairy at all, as we don't have it in the house for DS. I have tried to talk to a few different GPs about the situation, but I can't get any of them to take me seriously about the intolerance. They all just tell me that she will "grow out of it" too. In the meantime we have to suck it up and accept that some nights DD2 will wake up up to 10 times a night crying because she is coughing.
Am I reading into things too much, or should I be pushing further to see a dietician about it? Is this something that a homeopath can help with? We have tried soy formula with DD2, it made her really sick. We have also tried goats milk formula which didnt seem to help either. I have read that it contains a lot of the same proteins so won't necessarily help with dairy intollerance?
Thank you so much for any advice you can give!!
