Hi beano, I haven't done it but would be interested to know also. Can all fertility clinics in NZ do it? Is it expensive?

We're going for this and hopefully starting ivf in the next 1-2 months - funded because we are carrying a chromosome translocation. If this is your issue, the success rates are low. We have been told by FS it is our best chance etc, but I have joined a online group for people dealing with BT and am hearing the 'real' story.
In NZ PGD is done in the Monash clinic in Melbourne. We have to go to AKL for egg retrieval and embryo biopsy. My understanding is it is about $16k privately.
The methods used for PGD is FiSH (Fluorescent in Situ Hybridisation) and I am hearing some query about whether that technique alone can negatively affect embryo development. I am not saying this to scare you or anything, but if you are going into this its good to hear from people who have been through it.
There is another newer PGD technique called CGH (comparative genome hybridisation?) which is being used in the states in a few clinics, but I emailed Monash about it - they are apparently doing validity studies on it but not offering it right now. The difference is that the embryos are biopsied on day 5 instead of day 3, so there are a few more cells and any that might arrest in the first few days have done their thang. Because FiSH takes 24 hours to get the results and CGH takes 48 hours for results, CGH embies are frozen and put back on a 'natural' cycle.
This is my understanding of this, but I take no responsibility for accuracy! If you want to join that group let me know (although might be googleable - its a googlegroup, or yahoo, sorry can't remember) and I'll PM you it. Also am willing to keep in touch if you are dealing with BT or whatever, as there's few of us out there and its a hard road - no 'happy accidents' for us usually! I don't come in here much now, but PM me if you want.

3x miscarriages, balanced translocation likely culprit.

My husband and I went through PGD July last year. We have a genetic condition in my family and felt that having PGD was the best option for us.
Because we live in Taranaki, we were under Fertility Associates in Hamilton, who we have found very good. When it came time for the IVF we were transfered into Auckland who were extremely professional. It felt like we got the very best of care in Auckland, having one of their top doctors.
The embryos were sent to Monash in Melbourne to be tested.
When I had my egg collection, they collected 18 eggs, 12 of which were able to be fertilized. Cells from 8 of the embryos were sent to Melbourne to be tested. Of them, 3 were effected which were discarded at our request. 1 fresh blastocyst was implanted 5 days after the collection, which took initially, and then split into twins, which I sadly miscarried at 8 weeks. Of the other unaffected, 2 had to be discarded and 2 could be frozen. Of the two frozen, sadly neither have progressed, so we are now back to square one. We will be going through PGD again this year.
The worst part with PGD is the waiting for the tests in Oz and also having so many extra tests done, so that they can get the probe right to test the embryos. At least through with having it done, it gave us peace of mind that our children (if it ever happens) will be unaffected by the condition.
