Topic: FA Appointment Posted: 23 May 2011 at 7:41pm |
Hi Ladies,
I've posted this question in the TTC #1 under 30 forum as well, but I figured a double post couldn't hurt
Today I got hold of FA to request an initial appointment, just wondering if anybody else has been to them already, and what I can expect? It isn't a GP referred appointment, as we're hoping it'll be a bit quicker going there privately. Any tips/info would be much appreciated!

Hi there,
They will let you know of the tests you need to have before you go. At the first appointment they should go over the results and discuss any history with you. Hopefully your test results give you some answers and you can get a plan of attack straight away.
If you dont get the test stuff your first appt wont give you much info, they will just let you know that there are a few tests that you need to do and they'll know more when they are done.
Which FA are you with?
Good luck

Yay Im hoping they'll give me a list of any tests I need that I can get out of the way before our first appointment. I'm with FA Hamilton, have given them our basic info so now just waiting to hear back.

Hi Inkedpixie
I had my first FA appointment back in December. They did an internal scan (ovaries, uterus etc) and asked about periods, general health etc. They then gave us suggested tests to do - for me it was an HSG (xray of fallopian tubes) and a post coital test (which we didn't do). The tests they suggest will probably depend on your situation though.
Good luck!

Hi, I had my first appt with FA in Hamilton last July. As you can self-refer here for a free initial public funded consultation, that's what we did. The wait for the free appt was only 6 weeks.
They sent us out several forms to complete, both for DH and I. Medical history, etc. Plus some forms to get blood and sperm tests done before we saw them. The tests the female does need to be done on CD3 and CD21 (or 7DPO if you don't OV on CD14). The man's sperm test can be done at any time, though there are abstaining guidelines, ie; how many days for him to not BD before getting the test.
When we went to the appt, they ran through our test results, and were about to start us on clomid, but did an internal scan to rule out cysts, and found 3 so hence the clomid didn't happen, and we were put on the public waiting list for a laparoscopy instead. Which took 6 months to happen.
We've seen VP Singh at FA in Hamilton.

We are also going through FA Hamilton - were referred there through our dr and had our first appt in June 2010. We are with Lakshmi.
As all the other ladies have said above there are all the basic blood tests etc that you need to have done and I had to have a smear before going as they needed an up to date one.
FA did an internal scan of my ovaries etc and they did give us quite an informative information pack and DVD to watch.
I'm not sure what the wating list is like now but we were told it was 18 months for public funded when we first went.
We have been bumped up the list from Feb 2012 to Nov 2011 which is good.
Good luck with your first appt.

Thank you for all the info ladies :-) have our appointment on the 16th of June, I've got a list of blood tests to get done beforehand but because the appointments so soon we can't do the day 2 bloods until after the appointment so not too sure how much will cone from this one. Still, very excited/relieved to have things underway! I'm very doubtful my DF is to 'blame' seeing as he has 2 kids with his ex wife so I'm keen to hear what the docs can do for me

Hi Inkedpixie
I'm with FA Auckland. I found that going to FA was the best step for us. They did an internal ultrasound (which you get used to after a while), they get other tests done. They got me onto monitoring where they do bloodtests through the month and a scan to count your follicles and then tell you when the best time to TTC is. We're still trying but it is good to get information to help with the TTC journey. Good luck :)

Hi ladies just wanted to drop in with an update; went to FA yesterday, have been told to get an HSG and DF needs to get some tests done too, and then they want to talk IUI and IVF as option A (for 'good' test results)and B (for 'bad' test results).
Took it pretty hard, wasn't expecting anything that serious to be brought up at the first appointment! And unfortunately because DF has 2 children under 12 with his first wife and we have them 'too much', we don't qualify for any public funding so will need to come up with the money somehow. Argh!
Maybe I was expecting too much, and DF thinks I was being a bit naive to not expect IUI and IVF to come into the conversation, but the only info I got was a sheet on what to expect with an HSG so I'm a bit stunned. Didn't help that on the way to the appointment ran into 2 friends who are both due in the next month, and then had a baby shower today for a third. Eek!
So anyway that's where things are at, it's a bit overwhelming at the mo. Hope you all have a good weekend.

Thanks for the update, it's always interesting to see how other people get on. I understand why you would have taken it pretty hard, they are fairly blunt (in a "trying to be caring" kind of way) and honestly, it sounds like you got the same story I got. Basically we don't qualify for public funding yet, because of having one child, so have to have been TTC for 3 years before we're on the list, so they pushed BIG time for the private cycles of either IUI or IVF, which is money we just don't have.
Did the blood test results and sperm analysis show up anything, or did they not have the results yet? If they didn't even have the test results, they shouldn't be telling you that the only way you'll conceive is to pay privately for IUI/IVF, and unless there are sperm issues, clomid is usually the first port of call. Did they pass any mention of that at all?
It may be that you end up using IUI/IVF, but I just want you to know that it's not the ONLY option available to you. I know exactly what they're like, and they are in the business of making money by helping people conceive, so unless you qualify for public funding now, they will push and push the private funded stuff on you, and make it seem like you won't conceive without it.

Thanks for your response Ooligator, we don't qualify for public finding for another 5 years. They've only got some of the test results back, nit the day 2s or the sperm analysis which is why I was so shocked that she leapt straight to the big guns. She didn't mention clomid or any other treatment than iui/ivf.
When we go back after the next round of tests I'm going to ask about clomid and any other possible options that aren't so insanely expensive. Obviously if they're the only way to go then well cross that bridge when we get to it.
Thanks for the encouragement/ heads up about other options. Will be interesting to see how we get on at the next appointment!

Hey Inkedpixie.
I was just looking around some other forums and see you got your BFP. That is awesome! What line of treatment did you start in the end? What was your fertility issue? Always good to hear success stories, sorry for being nosy! Must have happened very quickly for you, that's great.

Hi missmel, crazily enough we fell pregnant before getting any treatment- so it was an unassisted conception! Got the bfp before we had any other tests done so not sure what they would have shown.
