Topic: CS and toddler Posted: 12 June 2011 at 4:57pm |
Hi ladies,
Would like to hear from others who have had a CS with a toddler. How did you manage without lifting them? DD will be 20 months when this one is born and she is quite clingy (especially when teething or sick). DH will be off work for 1-2 weeks and I also have alot of family close by who can help out.
TIA

my dd was 20months when I had DD2 by c/s
didnt find it a problem by the time you have 5-6days in hospital you are over the worse. mine was a climber/good walker so she just climbed into/out of the car.pram & cot herself.
the worst part was bending forward, like to a bottom drawer when she needed a cup for drink or getting her clothes/shoes from bottom of cupboard.
guess I sat down to get her changed can hardly remember! nappy changing was done on the floor or couch for her, telling her when to lift her bottom etc, rather than me lifting her.
you will know your own body & limits you will be fine!
maybe a good idea is start getting her used to not being picked up so much like you sit down first on the couch and careful of mums tummy before you sit on my knee for a cuddle etc
ie have a bit of a practise/pretend you are a bit sore from now til then which is quite easy really with a growing tummy!

I found setting a few things in place before hand helped alot. I taught DS to slide down the stairs on his tummy, climb in and out of the highchair by himself, sit next to me not on me and got Dad to do the bed and bath routine. My DF was home with us for two weeks. The day he went back to work I had to do everything. I had to do the school run, put DS to bed etc. By that stage I was feeling pretty good. Just listen to your body and don't attempt anything it tells you not to. And if you do feel sore rest up.

DD was 21 months, I got down to her level as much as possible rather than lifting her, stopped using highchair (she has a little fold out couch/chair) and transitioned her into a bed while still pregnant, taught her to climb on a step stool up into her bed

Dont ask me, i was the worst c-section patient ever. I was carrying DS1 and DS2 at the same time! To be fair, DS1 at 18 months weighed the same as DS2 does now, he is light weight lol.
I did get on the floor a lot and he was pretty good not to jump on me, but sometimes I just had to pick him up! I found the recovery much better second time around, not sure if its because i laboured for 1/8th of the time so my body wasnt so worn out or if I knew what to expect and what to do or if they were just more careful?
Definitely start putting some things in place now, DS1 could climb up on the sofa whidh was really handy while feeding!

DS was 14 months when DD was born, but I was much more comfortable after my elective than my emergency C Section. DH was home for 3 weeks, so he helped a lot, but I did lift DS at times if I had to, I was just really careful.
Changed him on the floor, got him to climb onto a chair and then Id lift him the rest of the way into his cot etc.

Thomas was 2 when Lily was born. I battled a lot of the picking up by getting other people to do it for me. Support support support!!! By the time hubby had finished his 2 weeks off, I was alright lifting by myself anyway. Its all about how you lift! Use your knees and not your back and you'll be fine.

What the others said, and def recommend getting a tiny table and chairs if the high chair is still in use. My husband took five wks annual leave, plus he showed our toddler "mummy's big ouchie" so he knew I was a bit sore.
