Topic: Nightmare c-section Posted: 18 June 2011 at 3:53pm |
I ended up having an emergency c-section 5 weeks ago. I spent a week in hospital and when leaving my wound was red so was sent home with antibiotics. 3 days later it was looking very red and squirting out puss. I went back to hospital and they did an ultrasound and found a collection next to my wound. I was told this collection was an abscess. So there were 2 problems my wound was infected and I also had a large abscess. My first trip to theatre they partially reopened me and cleaned the wound. A drain was inserted to drain the abscess. This was taking too long so a second trip back to theatre was needed and they reopened the wound fully and inserted a vacuum dressing, a larger drain was inserted to drain the abscess. Third trip back to theatre they reclosed the wound and my drain was taken out a few days later. My bowel went into shutdown so had fleet enemas and drinking movical to get things going again and ended up with diarrhea. So after spending a further 2 weeks of hell in hospital, CT scans, drips, drains I was sent home with antibiotics. 5 days after I was sent home, I ended up in hospital, as the wound was looking very red again. I didn't end up staying and the district health nurse is coming each day to change the dressing and I’m still having to see doctors. Will my wound ever heal, I’m so over this! Has anyone had any experience like this from a c-section? The doctors said this never happens and just couldn't believe it.

Oh gosh that's awful! *hugs* I'm sorry you have had to go through this.
I had a rough time after my son was born(emerg CS) I didn't get an infection but I was insanely sore for weeks. I also had my bowels pretty much shut down while in hospital, and had to have xrays and stuff which was scary, I had chronic diarrhoea but couldn't pass ANY wind, so the wind was going round and round my gut and bowels etc but couldn't get out. Luckily for me lots of walking and drinking hot water got them to start again properly.
With the right antibiotic yours will start to heal, have they given you home care instructions and stuff? Arnica tablets are good for helping things heal from the inside out, I also found a cold flannel good when it was really sore and red and also, a heat pack helped give me a bit more movement.
I hope your feeling better soon! xx

I had an infection in my uterus and (ahh i cant remember what its called right now!) but collections of stuff under my scar (that righted itsself) I spent the first week in hosp and DDs 3rd week (ended up with strep G, but not on my scar) so nothing as bad as you.
But I sympathasise, totally not what you need with a new baby to deal with as well! I hope things start to turn around for you soon

big hugs - I did not really have any problems post section (esp compared to what you have been through) although I had bowel issues too - no movement for 3 days and then super loose until all the laxatives worked there way through. My wound began to break down but antibiotic plus drying it with a hair dryer on low helped to heal things up. Best of luck hon.

Guest_42430 just wondering how you are getting on now? I've had a couple of CS and recovery hasn't been straight-forward for either of them, so can sorta sympathise.. hope you're on the mend??

:( I can feel your frustration, after 15 hours of labor I was rushed in for a C-section. My whole labor was hell baby hadnt budged so we should've had ceaser alot earlier. Afterwards everything went fine except towards the first week I was getting pain in my abdo, MW told me it was normal. 3 days later I was chomping through pain killers she told me to cut down but I couldnt. I still had severe abdo pain I could'nt walk or sit. 5 days later my abdo was rock hard and blue. Hubby rushed me to hospital. When transferring me from the bed to wheel chair my wound burst open and they estimated 600mls flowed down my legs. (the smell was potent) I was in hospital for 3 days, having daily dressings where they would pack the wound. I was in so much pain i was screaming they had me on the gas during dressing changes. Which didnt do anything. Finally I was discharged I had the District nurse come every day for 6 weeks, to redress the wound. I was admited a further 2 times for more pain. All I wanted was to enjoy my baby :( Instead the first 8 weeks are a blur due to hospital visits, pain relief and pain i think my memory has blocked out.i dont remember the first time I saw my daughter, and I have no memory of her birth. The MW had my camera and only took one family pic right at the end once she was all cleaned up. I feel so cheated of such a special time in my life :(

where are you from and do you know who did you section?
why im saying is that it sounds similiar to mine....i was in hospital for a month after a botch up so sever that they told everyone i wouldnt make it...i was lucky at my mother was an RN and my midwife was amazing...i was told that if i had said something further the register would have lost her job......i was home bed for another month befroe i moved around....i had 3 huge clots the size of babies amoungst other things.....the thing that got me more is that i dont remember a month of my son because i was severly medicated ....everyone knew that i wanted to breast feed so they feed him for me....but we where told that the meds wouldnt affect him.....he is now 4 and it had majorly affected him.....i was determined no matter wat to have a normal birth the next time...i had to hold my scar closed with my hand and i was in more pain that was norm but i did it and i got to hold my girl.....and i was soooo proud of myself that i was on such a high that i couldnt sleep for two days.......hope everything gets better for you....much love
