My partner and I are becoming increasingly irate with our 3 year old. He does not listen to us when we give instructions, he pulls faces and frowns worthy of a 'teenager award', he is too rough with his 1 year old brother. I feel like a broken record and am exhausted at the end of the day. The past few weeks have been hard and I have not enjoyed being with him, I am sad to say. Maybe our expectations are too high, I don't know. It doesn't seem to be this way (so much of the time) for other friends with kids the same age. We try really hard to provide a calm, very loving and disciplined environment. We do nice things with our kids and spend time teaching them about the world. We are getting extremely disheartened.

Totally normal to be honest. My kids are 8, 6 and 3, and it really does sound totally normal. At that age they are testing all sorts of boundaries.

My second son almost drove me bananas, especially with being too rough with his baby bro, but with patience and persistence, it does pass.

All the best.

They are called Threenagers for a reason

I've found that verbalising emotion "Are you frustrated" etc helps heaps.

when my ds was 3 i did a course called incredible years through family works. we started back with the basics - play - sit beside your child and comment on what they do. then move onto playing with them leading. we also did a poster with family rules and had on the fridge and made up a list of routine - going to bed etc so they know what to expect. find their currency and using that as rewards. was really good and man alive ds changed within weeks. good luck and yes remember they are 3, but we also did a chores list too.
