Got the results of DH's latest semen analysis this morning. Not good:

Total only 6.6 million, (should be a minimum of 20 million to be considered in the normal range, and 100 million is average, I think) and if that wasn't bad enough:

84% non-motile
88% abnormal heads
2% abnormal tails..

Plus various other numbers. I'm not quite sure what it all means in detail, but the nett result is that we ain't gonna get pregnant. Ever.
So a list of good things about being childless would be very helpful ight about now!

Dont give up Catie! We have nearly the same problem, you can now go to the fertility specialists and have IVF with ICIS in which they can extract a few healthy ones. or if that isnt an option then you can use a donor, depending on how you feel about that. Or even adoption, there are channels to follow there too.

There are always options out there, please dont give up on becoming a Mum, Im sure you would make a great Mum, and if your side of the fertility situation works well, then IVF and the such should work fab for you!

We're here for you hun! Eat some cake hug your man, and accept our

Hi guys

Thanks so much for your support - it really means a lot to me. I had a look at the results of DH's previous test, about a year ago, and both overall count and motility have tripled, so I guess that's something. We aren't eligible for free IVF, and only have about 25% chance of success with IVF, so $10,000 seems like a huge amount of money to risk. So I guess we'll keep trying 'the old-fashioned way' and hope for a miracle.
Thanks again.

BTW, last week I read a post here somewhere that included a link to another discussion group with some really useful info on semen analysis - can't find it now . Anyone know what it might be? EBB?

I'm so, so sorry catie. That's awful news.

This is perhaps my very individual way of looking at things, buuut ...

If you had a baby, you'd probably take maternity leave, right?

Which would result in lost income for a period?

And, if IVF wasn't successful, then you'd be able to catch that up and no harm done, not really, for the chance.

BUT if it was successful? And there's a 25% chance, which is as good as the next (fertile) persons!

Don't write it off catie ... give yourself some time to adjust and process things, and then give it a good think through and make your decision about the next step.

We're all here for you, and we're so sorry.

Do you mind me asking why you are not eligible for public funded IVF? Is it due to age?

Catie - I was told by FA and F+ that public funding was eligable to age 40. It does suck that it costs so much doesnt it!! I like Gingers logic at looking at the cost though.

Sorry for my ignorance but whats EBB?Is it the everybody website??

If not - have you checked out http://www2.everybody.co.nz/forum/ubbthreads.php
There are good forums on there too that may be helpful.

Hi

Unfortunately we were misinformed about the criteria when we initially enquired about IVF, and by the time we found out it was wrong (a couple of years later), we were over the age limit.

That's a good way of looking at it Ginger, but not really applicable to us: I have a really good employer who tops up the paid maternity leave to full salary for 14 weeks, and both DH and I can work from home several days a week and could take bubs into work some days, so I would take very little unpaid leave - so no savings there.

BUT, given that DH's sperm count has improved a lot, we're gonna keep going with the vitamin and herbal supplements and he's recently started acupuncture. and I'm thinking of making an appt with Fertility Plus to see if there are other options like IUI. I originally saw FA who said IVF with ICSI was the only hope, but that was when DH's sperm results were much worse, and I felt like they were pushing for the best $-making option - have heard that from others too. So all in all, feeling much better and more hopeful. there's only a tiny chance, but there IS a chance.

Thanks Star- that is the website I was trying to find.

sorry this is so long! THANKS!

Catie - that is just awful that you were misinformed. That is heartbreaking! Big hugs

I was told by a specialist that the physiology of sperm can change over time. My friends husband had basicly no swimmers. 7 yrs after they started trying, she fell pg! Unexpected by that stage as they had well and truely given up. They had adopted a wee boy in the meantime but are due in a couple of mths with a girl. So my point is, there is hope and you should definately seek another opinion and see if there are some more options for you now.
All the best!

Hi, I have been posting a bit in the infertility forum, but thought I would just pop in here and say HI!

I am 32 and we are TTC #1. I am PCOS and we are currently in our first cycle of clomid.

Anyway the real reason I wanted to pop in here is to say if you haven't tried it Blackmore's mens performance multi vitamin is supposed to be really helpful for "swimmers". I put my hubby on it as his tests are OK, but could be better. Don't know if it has made a sifference, but anything is worth a try. Got the idea from thehopefulstork.co.nz.

Hi
We went to a GP who's also a naturopath late last year, and she set us up with supplements to take. i don't know if that's what's made a difference, but something has, so we'll keep doing what we're doing.
