    Posted: 02 March 2011 at 9:21pm
Im wanting an elective c-section but am not having much luck/response from anyone....eeek!

Here is my background
34 weeks pregnant with baby #2. My first baby was born 2 weeks overdue, had an emergency c-section (reason:failure to progress) and baby was large (10lb 4oz!!!).
I had my referral to Waikato Hospital today for elective c-section, the specialist I saw was very dismissive & wanted to know why I was even there.....WTF??? There were a couple of issues:
1. They didn't have any notes from my previous birth so she wasn't even prepared to discuss options. I phoned Rotorua Hospital (where I had my 1st baby) when I got
home and they said my notes where requested & sent to Waikato 3/2/11!
2. Had another scan today & the baby is already weighing 2.2kg (just over average size?) it feels to me like its on track to be another 10lb baby, which freaks me out.
3. This specialist said she wouldn't even consider seeing me again until 38 weeks - I feel this is getting to late for me to have no plan!

I feel like I should have a choice about what I want to do but no one is even prepared to discuss or confirm anything with me. So frustrating. I did actually end up getting an appointment with a private obstetrician next week but thats gonna cost me ($3500). I don't really wana pay for this but it seems like its my only option to get what I want! Or do I try the hospital again & demand a 2nd opinion?

Im keen to hear anyone's thoughts/experiences on this....please!

Ask your midwife to request another appointment with another OB, and maybe ask her for your own copies of your notes to take along with you!

Bummer about your notes going missing! I could see why that may be an issue for the OB. But thats no excuse for being almost rude. Surely your midwife's referral would have a lot of the information needed? I'd be talking to my midwife about the situation. She is supposed to be advocating for you and your baby. I'm assuming she supports your decision for an elective? She may be able to somehow chase up your notes and should definately be able to arrange another appointment with preferrably a different OB.

wow that's so horrible they were so rude about it. I had an elective at chch womens they couldn't find any record of my 3rd degree tear with dd 13 years ago but they still booked me in for it with little fuss. I was told to go home and think about it and call to let them know if i still wanted it... this was at 36 weeks. it was so the best decision. I say go back, you may not even see the same specialist, get a second opinion. You've already had a c section (you have the scar to prove it i'm sure ) and tell them this is what you want. A previous c-s is a valid reason for an elective this time especially if it was emergency.
good luck.

wow that is very rude..i had en emergency c section but no medical reason to have another(though it would have ended that way anyway) and they saw me at 36 weeks..booked me in..and agreed to tie tubes and that was that..i ended up in labour just before being booked in (39 weeks) and they made me wait for my c section..dont start me on that so i nearly ended up with another emergency again...but anyway they should see you at 36 weeks and schedule c section and it is your choice after having one but I'm not sure whether they have to agree...? thought after two you have to have c section if you have another..

Definitely keep requesting appointments, and if you can ask for a different OB.
As far as weights go, remember that they are just estimates (coming from me where they said at 5 scans at both Pacific Radiology and at the hospital where they do a more thorough investigation) that a 40wk baby would be over 4.5kg... well he was a 41wk baby at 3.6kg. And apparently that's becoming more common!

Funnily enough if you were in Wellington requesting a second c/s they'd probably book you in then and there hehe! (I'm jokin by the way )

Hi HelKel,

Sorry I cannot help you at this point. But I have a question for you. Where did you ask that c-section cost you $3500. My partner wants to have c-section. If you have that contact number, could you pass to me please?

Very thanks

Neil

If you had an emergency CS the first time then by rights your allowed to choose whether you have an elective next time or VBAC(vaginal birth after Ceaser).

With my second(first was an emerg c section) I was going to try VBAC but at 7 days overdue went for the elective, but, my elective was booked in when I was 35 weeks at my first OB visit. I ended up having that date bumped forward as well.

You dont HAVE to try natural if you dont want to after an emerg CS(or a C due to breech baby etc), so keep at them and say you want an elective and can you please book it in now.

The OB wouldn't have been able to offer you any advice without your previous notes as they need those to discuss risks etc, and it wouldn't be his/her fault they have got lost in the system, still no reason for them to be rude though! Surprising Waikato are quite pro-VBAC but don't panic since you have had a previous casaer you are entitled to choose an elective this time round. They now like to do Caesars as close to 40wks as possible as the outcome for baby is better so 38wks is still plenty of time to set a date. So you don't really need "a plan" as such, if you go into labour prior to that you just notify your MW and rock up to hospital they will have it noted you opted for elective and they will fit you in ASAP.
Oh and I agree with the scan weight, don't take it as gospel they can be out by a lot!
