so pregnant with twins, and aiming for v-birth but keeping an open mind for a possiable csection. if things change before/during labour. now im scared of them and mw knows this. she said that sometime you are better of getting a general then doing the spinal block and being awake during it. on one hand that makes sense cause i dont really want to know whats going on, when they do it, she reckons you have better recovery,(able to walk straight away).on the other hand i dont want to miss the birth, would feel weird if i did.so just wondering if anyone has had the general option?what are your thoughts you girls that have had csections?
thanks

If you do have a c-sect I would totally go for the spinal over the general. You are awake so you get to see them straight away, you can have skin to skin asap. Where as if you are under you wake half an hour later all groggy and out of it, quite often you feel like crap for days cause its a major thing going under, and frankly there is no reason to have a general unless it is an absoloute emergency and they have to get the babies out then and there. If you can go for the VB, it is totally possible with twins, you just have to get in the right frame of mind. Good luck

If you go for a general then your DH/DP can't be in the room with you.

I had my twins by c-section @ 35weeks. Twin 1 was head down but Twin 2 was the 'high risk' twin so was recommended that we have a c-section rather than the risk of needing to have an emergency c-section for twin 2. These were my first kids so no previous labour experience.

Anyway, DH and my midwife were in the room with me. Him for my support and her for his support This way she sat with me while he went to look at the girls while the doctors we're working on them.
The atmosphere in the operating room is a very cheerful one.

While in recovery I had an aunt sit with me while DH followed the girls to NICU.

I only got to cuddle one baby for a brief moment before they got whisked away, but seeing/feeling them being born are moments I will treasure forever.

hey isabel

Ive just bumped up the pro c/section chat topic for you to have a read thru.

My friend had a c.s for her twins in wellington and found it fantastic, she had twin twin syndrome I think it is called where one twin is greedy? anyways wee boy 3lb and wee girl 6lb so he was whisked away for treatment with the doctors /peads but she got to cuddle her DD.
What hospital are you going to birth in as might be an idea to get advice from other mums that have had c/s in same hosp as they are all a bit different.

here in timaru we dont have recovery. we stay in theater and go straight back to private rooms with ensuites, its great midwife stays with you the whole time. OB passes MW the bubs who brings her too you then over to the Pead table for a check then back for skin to skin. my DD stayed on me for 3hours snuggling it was lovely. she was 36wks, so it might be different if they are born earlier being twins going to nicu or the like. Good to be schooled up on all the advice./options/etc

Ps a spinal block is slightly different to a epidural, a spinal wears off quickly and don't feel as drowsy afterwards, for me I didnt feel drowsy at all. I actually found I was more "withit" with my c/s than with my labour / vb.

I had a crash c-section which had to be done under a GA, I didn't have an option but I am still so disappointed that it wen that way. Not only was DH not able to be there but also because neither of us were able to see DS being born. He was whisked away to SCBU as soon as he was born so granted we wouldn't have had skin to skin etc anyway, but I really wished I could have been fully 'there'

I already had an epi during labour, but after the GA which was at 3.50pm, I wasn't able to get up until the following morning (around 7am probably) but was still very unstable (going to see DS was my motivation!!).

I had a VBAC with DD, completely different birth and had skin to skin, BF right away and it was amazing and if I could have had that with DS I absolutely would have.

All the best with your birth

Hey Is, had an em CS with DD and it was the best positive experience I could have had. Def aiming for an elective CS this time. My recovery with an epi was great, but as the ladies say a spinal is even better. Was hobbling around the next day, and had no complications. Was even laughing in the theatre with the staff. You can choose to make it a positive experience, but I am a wus when it comes to anybody poking around inside me but with DD fell asleep on the table, was so tired from labouring. This time will be very aware so am thinking about that, but will have DH to distract me and keep me talking, and the anaesthetist does a good job with that too as I recall.

Got to hold DD straightaway and feed her not long after.

Wriggles is right, a general will affect you a lot more. I have a friend who has had an op each year for the past 3 yrs and takes ages to recover simply from the general, not the op itself. It does knock you around a bit I'm told.

Any questions feel free to ask me on our dec babies thread.

Thanks everyone on your input. i think if we keep out VBplan in place with open mind for csection ill be fine. spinal sounds like the one. was just worried about not having a positive experience, but hearing your stories have made me more sure that you can have a positive birth with csection, just have your mind set right and a plan in place! think i just freaked a bit with hearing bad stories of long recovery and no skin to skin.

Isabel, have you posted in the multiples section?? You could hear some twin birth stories (what happened/VB vs Csection and why/etc) and get some first hand experiences? Or maybe talking to some twin mums in your local multiple birth club?

isabel, I recently had an elective c section with DD2 and it was a very positive birth experience in comparison to DD1's traumatic birth. I walked into theatre with my m/w and DH, it was all very calm and relaxed and my recovery was fabulous. With my elective I had skin to skin and she was breastfeeding within 15 mins of being delivered. I was up showered and dressed by 9am the next morning and felt fabulous. I am so pleased that I finally got my positive birth experience as I felt so ripped off by DD1's birth and I didn't want a repeat of that!

Having a c section was the best decision I could have made to help me mentally heal from my first birth experience

Wow I cant believe she is suggesting you have a general - that's actually just terrible advice. Their are more medical risks involved and a more difficult recovery - not to mention you would miss the birth of your babies!

I had a spina;l-epidural with my section and it was great afterward for pain relief - getting it done was not great, but mostly because I was scared I think. Once the spinal kicked in and the op started I was fine. Good luck!!

Isabel - I'm with everyone else - a general should be the absolute last resort. I had a spinal for my elective, and the actual c-section was a very positive experience. My recovery was easy, and the only negative was finding out I react badly to morphine/tramadol which left me sick and spaced out for a few days until I refused to take the tramadol anymore and miraculously felt better! I'm planning a vbac for bubba (so long as they play nicely and are head down!), but a c-section wouldn't be the end of the world.

Uh, they wont give you a general unless you've gotta have things happen super quickly and stuff. If you go elective - you get a spinal, not an epi. Epi's are only for natural labour and they just top it up if you go for an emergency section.

I dunno what drugs your MW is on Isabel, but walk straight after a c-section? HELL NO. God, major abdominal surgery and all. Has she been a MW for long? She shouldnt even be telling you that you have the option of a general.

Anyway, dont be scared of having a c-section, they're not scary, I promise! You're behind a curtain, you cant see anything gross and tbh, I was too busy laughing (and getting told off for wiggling) at stuff my MW was saying!
I honestly cant see the attraction in pushing a watermelon sized object out of me. Sunroof all the way. But I mean, dont think i'm saying not to do it! Thats just how I feel :P
