Topic: When did you stop using Losec Posted: 22 July 2010 at 4:29pm |
Leah is 7 months + 2 weeks. She has been on losec since 4 months. She had severe reflux before that, but had no idea as she started with silent reflux.
Every time I get a new prescription the Dr asks me to see if she will do fine without it, but after only 1 day things turn to custard. I forgot to give it yesterday and it was such a rough day and night.
For those of you with babies that did use Losec, when did you find your baby was able to go without it?
I also realise after reading other posts that the liquid losec usually only lasts a week, but my chemist does it in monthly bottles. Does anyone else get there's made up for a month. I'm concerned that I'm using mine for too long.

We are on capsules (granules) here. Doesn't look like we'll be off it any time soon

Oh dear, so could be a while then. Even with losec and gaviscon Leah still spills. Not as bad though.
Thanks ladies. I'm really nervous about Dr wanting to take her off it again to see if the reflux has gone. I know it hasn't cause all I need to do is forget to give it to her for one day and she is miserable. I have also found that when we have taken her off it, when we do start giving it to her again, it takes a while for it to kick in and get back into her usual routine again, cause without it, there is no sleep and a lot of unsettledness.

DD is still on Losec at 14months. I suspect that her dose will be increased soon as well.
Losec and gaviscon will not stop Leah from spilling, but if she is still unsettled without it then it sounds like she still needs it. I think that the general rule of thumb is that as they eat more solid food the reflux gets better (although the opposite is true in our case) so at 7 months she is probably still not eating enough food.
Fingers crossed she improves soon...

Thanks Mum_me. She is definitely not eating enough. She is a bit behind in that department and up until a week ago we would be lucky if she had two teaspoons of food a day and then that would generally come back up anyway.

My understanding when DD was on losec was that because it works by effectively stopping the stomach's acid production, when she comes off it, there is a temporary over-production of acid and her symptoms may worsen initially. I upped her gaviscon for the first 3 days and then looked at how she was once I reduced that. If that is true then the response to missing one dose may not be a good indication.
DD was one who has shown huge improvement with solids though. Have you tried Leah dairy free?

Don't stress too much about her not taking solids. It may make your life easier from a reflux perspective, but she won't be missing out on anything by not getting much at this stage.
My DD is still not on solids (other than food trials of a teaspoon every month or two). She is just exclusively BF at this stage and was an early walker and talker. Let her guide you as to quantity etc

Thanks ladies. T_Rex sounds like a plan re more gaviscon and see how she will do. I have a few more weeks left of Losec so will see how we go then.
That is great she improved with solids. I hear so many stories from parents with reflux babies that say they either get better and some cases worse. At the moment, apart from banana Leah cannot have any fruit otherwise she will be violently ill. Everything including pair seems to do it to her.
Mum_me yeh I think I will just relax on the food thing. I get too caught up in what other babies her age are eating. She seems fine without solids and doesn't seem extra hungry, so will just take my time.
