Topic: random hives after childbirth?! Posted: 23 January 2009 at 4:24pm |
OK, so 3 days after Reuben was born, these started - hives from armpits to feet, that appear only in the middle of the night, and last a few hours. This is additional to the eczema that had me itching through the whole pg cranking it up and getting worse too. The hives are so bad that on the first night, my tummy and back looked like a map of the world, 'cause a lot of them join together. The Doc's prescribed a steroid cream and antihistamine, and I'll get a skin prick test done when I get to the lab. But how weird is that? The only change in my diet has been going from low-dairy to dairy-free. No new lotions or detergents, environmental anythings or foods. Has anyone else had this happen?

Did you have an epidural? For 3 days after J was born I itched like CRAZY, was covered in calamine lotion. Midwife said some people react to the epidural.

Could it just be all the hormonal changes?

After I had Dominic I started reacting to all my cosmetic products, even ones that I had been using for years. I got hives everywhere it was unbearable. In the end I had to change to all natural and organic products for my skin and even then some things still gave me hives. It was like my chemical make up had changed. It went away when I got pregnant with Isobelle and I have been fine this time round.

I got hives once on my hands and feet from a reaction to coedine or asprin (can't remember which one it was) and recently came up with what looked like hives over my stomach but couldn't put it down to anything I'd changed. They went away after a few days by themselves and haven't had it again - random!
Could it be related to something to do with childbirth like epidural, antibiotics, pain killers? Maybe it's just a hormonal reaction? Hope it goes away soon for you.

Reuben arrived while we the anaesthetist was in another surgery, so he beat me to the epidural! I had the gas, antibiotics and syntocin, nothing else. Apart from now chowing down on man-sized meals, the food's still the same. Maybe hives are just one of those things that are sometimes completely random? Sounds like it here anyway. The Phenergan I was prescribed for them has kept them at down for the last 2 nights, but I'll try one more night of dozy night feeds before I kick that and see if it's done the trick already. Ah, all very weird.

I'm with cuppatea - could be related to hormonal changes. AFAIK you can get hives at times of stress and/or sleep deprivation... sounds like the first few days with a newborn to me!

The chemist told me to use hayfever tablets to stop the itch which worked a trick (from memory I think I only took 1 or 2). Don't know if that has the same ingredients as phenergan or if it's safe to take while breastfeeding?

I had that too with Tom. God I hope I dont get it again. I never worked out what caused it. I googled everything and one thing that made sense was a candida infection (thrush....but more through the body...ie you just have too much in your system). I dont know if that was it or not. Anyway, I ended up taking Zyrtec (or chepaer equivalent) once a day and it helped. they lasted a few months though.
YOU HAVE MY SYMPATHIES!!!!

I have had the same thing, started on one part of my body and spread over the following 5 days. Took 2 Dr's to give me a correct diagnosis which was post partum hives. It did not start till 5 weeks after my baby was born and has lasted a week so far, I also had an epidural so not sure if that contributed. A topical cream has helped the itch and now I am on an antihistamine too. Hope it doesnt last forever!
