Topic: What chores do you 4 year olds do? Posted: 31 July 2010 at 12:44pm |
OK so DS will be 4 in a couple of weeks, and I have been slack so far at giving him set jobs. At the moment I just ask him to help with things, but not always the same things and it can be a battle at times with lots of 'I can't's
What chores do your 4 year olds do?
Does anyone give pocket money at this age?

I don't do pocket money either, she gets rewarded with the pleasure of making me happy
Her only chore is to tidy her bedroom daily.
We also expect her to clean up after herself (put away toys when she's finished, put rubbish in the bin etc) and she helps out with things when she's asked (or when she asks if she can).

My boy is younger but I'm following the lead of daycare (so 3-4 year olds in his centre) and they are all expected to tidy up after themselves - toys and put their plates and cups in the appropriate place for cleaning and put rubbish in the bin so I'm starting there. He also likes helping with the washing.

Yep we are the same as Kebakat- have been making Isla tidy up her toys from a young age. Usually just at the end of the day. All her toys are in storage containers marked with a picture and the word of whats in it - eg "puzzles", "dolls", and she is only allowed one container out at a time.
She has to always put her rubbish in the bin, she takes out the recying to the bin for me too. Takes her paltes/cups etc to the kitchen.
I also make her put her laundry in the basket, and if she takes off her jumper or jacket etc she must take it to her room.
Havent even thought about pocket money. As far as Im concerned the jobs that she is doing is just part of being a member of a household, with each member cleaning up after themselves to keep some sort of order.
She loves helping with the washing, helps wash the car and vacumm etc.

We are along the same lines as everyone else just cleaning up after themselves. When I ma cleaning I ask the kids to help but I don't make them do it. They have no choice about cleaning up after themselves though. I don't do pocket money either but we have a pin board for good behaviour. When they get 10 they get to choose something from one of those cheap asian shops.

We're the same as this, Harry is expected to do these things and we're always telling him how helpful he is... I love that he's a reasonably tidy kid and puts things away in the right places! He also helps to unload the dishwasher each day. Oh and he helps to wipe down the table and do dusting and stuff, but that's more cos he likes to do it not that he's expected to. I love that it's habit now that he puts his toys back in the right containers and only gets one thing out at a time. I might get him to start making his bed in the mornings too, cos that's another good habit and only entails pulling up the duvet.

Oh and if he does the 'no' or 'I can't' thing, he goes to time out til he's ready to do what we asked. Doesn't happen very often though thankfully, only sometimes with tidying toys - and usually now it's only the threat of 'do I have to send you to your room or are you going to put your toys away... make a good choice' and that seems to work lol.
Don't think we'll have pocket money here for a while, though he is a lot younger than your boy. We give him coins when we have them for his money box, and most of that he takes to kids church to give to their sponsor child. Sometimes I surprise him with a treat like a trip to the park or an iceblock or something, and tell him it's cos I think he's such a cool kid and is so helpful, and I appreciate his help. But it's not expected, it's just a nice lil thank you thing sometimes iykwim.
