Topic: Party Food Ideas! Posted: 29 July 2010 at 1:19pm |
I am just getting to grips with the whole allergy thing so am after a bit of help. I have 2 questions in regards to parties.
1. Did you just take party type food for your child to parties?
2. What did you serve at your childs party?
My son is dairy free and we are also trying to avoid soy.
Thank so much for your help!

I would check in advance what food they would be rpoviding that was ok for him, and take other stuff for her too.
Is it your 2 1/2yr old or the baby with the dairy problem? Will be a lot easier if its the baby. I havent got experinece with having to suddenly eliminate food groups with an older child.
I knew before Isla even started solids that she had a dairy problem, then later discovered it was an allergy.
Make a dairy free cake and either slics and freeze or cook itin muffin tins and freeze the muffins- then when u go to a party u can take one out in the morning and ice it and take that to the party for him for when everyone is eating cake. I used to do this for Isla to take to daycare too, so there was always a bag of isla friendly cake in their freezer for them to give her when there was a kids party at daycare.
I did the same with bisuits to take to mainly music and to playgorup when the other kids would be given bought bicuits. She got to age (about 18 months I think, maybe closer to 2) where she kicked up a stink at not getting the biscuits like the other kids, and I would be trying to give her ricecrackers. All the kids sat on a mat and helpers and leaders would hand the kids 2 biscuits each- I would pass one of them isla's biscuits without her seeing and they would give them to her and she was happy as with this!
Mostly there was always suitable stuff she could eat at friends kids parties, and my friends were great and making sure there was stuff on offer that she could have, or I would offer to take a plate - carrot/celery /cucmber sticks with hummus, plain chips, plain ricecrakers, cherios.

Cory is wheat, egg and peanut free
So i take his food with him where ever i go...whether it be to a party, or out for coffee with friends etc.
At parties i just pack a lunch bag for him...making sure that there is at least a cupcake in there...he is now just getting to that stage where he wants what everyone has...so i try and make his food as close as possible to the other food.
At Corys first birthday i served up the normal party food and had a small selection of food that was gluten free, egg free (which was easy as i was organising the party).

My kids dont have a problem .. but Blondys daughter Nat is dairy free and when we have get togethers or parties she always takes food for her and whomever is hosting has dairy free food avail.
When we go to theres she serves up "normal" food and Nat has her own.

Thanks everyone for your replies.
Kellz, it is the baby so its much easier but we are just about to start the first birthday circuit so wanted to know what was the norm. I like the cakes at DC idea. I have made muffins etc and frozen them and always take snacks for him when we go for coffee.
For his birthday it is all going to be dairy and egg free so that he can "go for it" otherwise I would feel bad. Is that ok? I figure it all tastes the same anyway and most party food is easy to adapt?

Obviously I'm a bit away from that (DS being only 6 months), but I would do exactly the same. When I have coffee groups at my house all the food I prepare is dairy free, people often comment that they can't even taste the difference.
Everyone else has given great advice!!

For Campbell's 1st birthday, I did a dairy/egg/wheat-free cake mixture since there were a couple of littlies with allergies. I made icing without butter, and used pureed raspberries and Kiwi Crush for the flavourings (on separate cakes!) and instead of food colouring.
The kids at that age definitely don't know any different!

Of course that is ok. It's your childs birthday! Samantha has an allergy to egg and the only place it can be an issue now days is at kindy. They have a special treat container for her in case kids bring in little cakes etc that she can't eat.
I have to add that we have an extra special group of lovely Mummy friends. All the birthday parties Sam has been to this year have been egg free specially for her. They have all gone to the effort to make their kids party food and cakes egg free so my little girl isn't left out. I feel very blessed to have such good friends
By the way, i have yet to meet a kid that noticed the lack of egg or dairy in a cake - and most things can be adapted with out anybody noticing at all

We just had Nat's party today, and everything for the kiddies was egg-free, and most of it dairy-free (although she's starting to eat some food with baked milk in it, and is ok - yay ). I have learnt that if you take food to a party, just make sure (as someone already said above), that you take something akin to cake (even a little muffin/cupcake), because Nat gets so sad if all the other kids are eating cake and she can't have any.
We also have great friends that cater to egg- and dairy-free most of the time.
We didn't do things very healthily today but here are some egg/dairy-free ideas...... chocolate crackles, gingerbread men, mini muffins, marshmallows, fruit kebabs, popcorn. we also did cheerios and sausage rolls, but both of those have some milk solids in them.
Let me know if you want recipes for anything. The gingerbread men in particular are rather yummy if i do say so myself
