Topic: What age did you stop giving Neocate? Posted: 17 May 2010 at 1:56pm |
My daughter is on neocate and is 15 months old. My special authority number is going to run out this month and I am wondering if I need to get another authority number or if she can stop having it soon and just drink rice milk?

If she still isn't eating any diary then I would carry on for a while. DS was on it until just after 2, he was only having one bottle of 180ml from 18 months and at around 20 months the paed said he could wean from it whenever, so we just let him lead they way and drop that last one himself.

Cool thanks for your posts. I will get a new authority number and carry on giving it to her.
We have just tried giving her half a slice of cheese on Saturday and again today. So far she seems ok, hasn't woken up crying at night and hasn't spilled or had runny nappies.

That's great, hopefully she is growing out of it. My boy grew out of his egg allergy by 20 months and he can now have cheese and yoghurt but has to have rice milk on his cereal cos that still doesn't agree with, but hopefully won't be too much longer. Just peanuts for us to still worry about now.

we're still going on it, and just had to renew out number too :) We tried tiny bits of cheese for a week, and the first couple of days she was fine, but by the end of the week her eczema was back, and she was waking multiple times a night
so looks like we'll be on neocate for a while yet!
Best of luck that your girl is growing out of it!

We started having multiple wake ups at night and so have stopped giving dairy and finally last night we had a good sleep.
Our Dr wants us to try and stop her reflux medication. Is it better to be on reflux medication and be able to have bits of dairy or to stop the reflux medication and give no dairy? My Dr doesn't know, I have asked the pead that we went to see (left a message) but not sure if I will hear back.

To me, reflux is either an issue with the muscle at the top of the stomach or a reaction to food.
You could stop the meds for a couple of days & leave all her food the same & see what happens. If no reaction great & then slowly introduce dairy & see what happens again. If she then reacts I'd keep avoiding dairy. At least that way she's be off the meds.

yeah I'd rather avoid dairy and be off the meds...Ethan was on it till one but my friend whose child still cant have dairy is on it till she can and she is 2.5 now.. so i would stay on it if i was you.

yeah I agree with others, I would rather no dairy and no meds than meds and dairy. Dairy is not an essential food, there is nothing in it that you can't get from other sources.
drumstx if you have the special authority number you should be getting it way cheaper than $80 a tin. I think when we swapped from neocate to neocate advance there was no change in price but not quite sure as we bought in 3 month lots and was always different amounts of tins cos he was slowly drinking less formula as he ate more solids. We were only paying $3.75 per tin for the advanced with the special authority number, through the canterbury DHB, I know other areas charge more but not $80 cos that is the price without the number. We use to buy ours through biolab so maybe ring them in your area and see if they have it? or ring your paed and ask them who to buy it from cos it really should not be costing you $80, no point having the authority number if you are paying that.

wow drumstick, it shouldnt cost you that much with a special number.
We pay $6.75 a tin with our number or $100 without it.
Have your tried a different chemist?
Cory has just turned one and I am starting to wean him onto cows milk now...it turned out that while he has food allergies he doesnt have a dairy allergy, but the other formulas werent agreeing with him.
So far so good...

drumstx - did you mean $80 a repeat? (as in for a dozen or so tins at a time?) That's what our bill is like too, at about $7 a tin, and we get 12 tins every 2months (ish). we're on neocate advanced too.
Nat's still reacting if we give her unprocessed/unheated dairy, or give it to her more than a once-off (she's ok with eg baked cheese on toast but only at most once a fortnight).

We have just changed over to neocate advanced and the specialist on Tuesday said that at this age until they are 3ish - neocagte advanced is better for them than rice milk. Has appropriate calcium and iron etc in it also.
We are having limited joy with trying cheese - just continued power spews so will prob be on it for a while yet!
Does anyone need any neocate (not advanced?) if so PM me cos I have 8 tins here and we have just changed over.

Thanks for all the tips and advice.
I left a message with the pead and he has recommended that we stop the reflux medication and avoid dairy then try giving her half a yoghurt each month to see how it goes.
So far Eva seems to be doing fine without her reflux medication. I am finding it hard to not let her have things with dairy in them when she sees other people eating them.
We pay $80 for 12 tins of neocate.
How many feeds of neocate are people giving each day? I am still giving Eva 3 bottles a day, she is really fussy with it and it has to be HOT and she refuses to drink out of a sippy cup and only has about 80mls each feed.

hi yes it is for 12 tins, sorry should have explained myself better, and we have to give 5 times a day 220mls each feed, though jack has a mickey button so wot eva he doesnt drink i put thru his tube, he has bad food aversion and doesnt eat a whole lot. we go thru about 12 tins every two weeks. is exspenive.
mel did u know if u heat it too much it bruises the proteins and makes it taste like metal? i didnt but it explains why jack wouldnt drink it! we also tried the tropical one:s] anyone have any luck with it. Also tried cooking with it, every time i try it ends up tasting like cooks tinfoil!! for a milk substutite we use oat milk, jack seems to like it, though it tastes like dirt to me it is a great alternative if u cant have rice or soy or dairy

12 tins every two weeks would be expensive drumstx.
I have tried giving neocate cold, warm, in food... every way I can and the only way she will drink it is hot, the lady on the neocate helpline told me that luke warm is suppose to be the most palatable, Eva must just have weird taste.
I have tried making custard with rice milk and even soy milk and she really doesn't like that either, I wonder if it is because she isn't use to have foods like that.

it seems expensive but if your in my situation and only able to drink soy milk.
i can easily drink 2L a day and at $3 normal price (not on special ) it could cost me $80 a fortnight.
i dont qualify for any subsidies as i can have dairy in every form, apart from cream and milk so i have to pay for all my own milk out of my pocket.
but cos it is so expensive, even when brought on special. i have to limit myself to 2L a week. i like milkshakes
