Topic: Surgery Posted: 08 April 2011 at 10:02pm |
Ok so my boy, just turned one, is having Surgery next friday. We've been on the waiting list for the excision of his brachial fistula. It's a minor surgery, will take 1 hour.
Now, due to his severe allergy to egg and moderate allergy to a wide range of other foods/additives, I am absolutely crapping myself, as to whether he will be safe while in hospital! (1 night stay)
Has anyone been in this situation before?

No, but talk over everything that is worrying you with his drs. They'll be able to reassure you.

So I'm sure that the surgery it's self will be fine as I get to sit down with the Surgeon and the Anesthetist beforehand. My main concern is pain relief. I can get colourless Paracetamol but it still has Benzoates which he gets a mild rash from, becomes itchy and little bit grumpy, but if he has to have 3 doses or more then it will build up in his system and his rash will cover his body :(

That really sucks 2crazykids. I'm sure the specialists working on his notes will discuss an alternative and you could always raise the issue with them.
Good luck

Yea, they don't have all the right notes. I will ring them Monday, they are aware of a dairy allergy but not of everything else which we discovered whilst waiting. The hospital is in another city, not our normal hospital. Went to the chemist today and the pharmacist had nothing for me, he looked really hard too. I'm almost thinking is it worth it? I know it's a simple procedure and done early will be good as he won't remember and will be less traumatic, but if he's older I think he won't be so suseptible to these preservatives etc? I'm sure we'll make the right descision. If we go ahead, it may be that he has to have paracetamol, then we have a really grumpy baby for a week, steroid creams everyday, just have a really crappy time and get the whole silly thing out of the way?

Oh I feel for you. Surgery sucks at this age. We are going to try to wait as long as possible. DD screams when we go near a doctor or strangers and it will make the whole process so much worse, especially when tests and medicine will be given. I really hope it can be held off.
We aren't sure about all her allergies. She needs to be tested. We know she is lactose intolerant and reacts to fenpead - because of her reflux. She has severe reflux with secondary tonsillitis and they may have to take her tonsils out. Too risky at this age, but the antibiotics are no longer working and with the antibiotics and pain relief it makes her reflux worse and she gets a crook stomach.

We are leaving soon for the surgery (hospital is an hour away so staying over), I gave him some colourfree paracetamol last night for a mild cough and he has a stomach and back rash now all itchy and dry! so a taste of whats to come. I'm keen to get it over with now. I'm going to say to them they can't give him anything unless I've looked at it first.
I know he won't remember the whole thing so in a weeks time we may be out the other end of it!
Oh and the other alternative to pamol is suppositories we found out and they still have the benzoates in them anyway!
The pamol we got is double strength so we give half as much, that's the best the GP could do.
I'll let you know how it goes

OK! Well it's been just over a week since surgery and I'm glad to say it was less painlful then I thought it would be and things went pretty ok.
He had a bit of a cough leading up to it and the doc said that they'll have a breathing tube down his throat during the procedure and that he will have a sore throat. WELL he has been in a bit of pain the days after the surgery, just a sore throat though.
The actual day of surgery he handled pretty well. He was hardly even groggy afterwards, and didn't even throw up. On the trip home (that evening) he was very very itchy and got the runs but I think that's pretty normal anywho.
We got colourfree - not flavour free - pamol and ibuprofen which we gave both for 2-3 days and he didn't get much of a rash from it. He'd get more of a rash from a preservative covered dried apricot!
The anethetist and nurses were very good and listened completely to my concerns and explained everything to me. I gave them a printed sheet of what causes problems for him and they photocopied it in red and laminated it and put it in his folder! (I would recommend taking several copies though as they didn't have access to a copier until the ward)
What would have been nice though is a red band that some hospitals do to indicate allergies. Like hospital wrist bands but another red one beside it.
I still think though that it was a lot to take on board for such a wee fellow and it certainly wasn't fun! They put him to sleep via gas on my lap and I handed him over, walked downstairs, grabbed my mum, and BAWLED. It was so hard to just hand my precious kid to a surgeon. You just can't think about it too much! I said to the anethetist that I googled propofol and it had soy and egg in it. He said "it is a safe anesthetic", I said "I would be very nervous if you used it", he said "Ok that's fine".
I think he had about 5-6 different drugs go into his system during the op, anti nausea etc so I'm glad that I had the printed list.
I'm so glad it's done and dusted and he's much better now!
Kazper. He had a brachial fistula meaning a track in his neck connected to his wind pipe and opening on his neck, the size of a pin hole. Does not cause ill health but can cause problems later in life with fluid excretion.

Oh I'm close to tears reading it, just because I'm so scared of DD's surgery. I so hope we can hold it off for as long as possible.
So glad to hear he is doing well and it wasn't as bad as you thought it would be. The handing over part got me all teary. I just know DD will be so freaked even by the gas mask
