Topic: Recommendations for Sept/Oct planting? Posted: 20 September 2011 at 12:55pm |
Hi girls,
I'm getting ready to get our vege garden underway and wondered what would be good to get in the ground this or next weekend? Was hoping for strawberries, lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes minimum this year. Any other suggestions?
TIA

Now's also a good time to plant veges like carrots, beans, peas, cauliflower, and courgettes.

For things like your tomatoes, and courgettes I will still do it under cover and plant out later rather.
www.gardenate.com is a brilliant website telling you waht to get ready for the next month and what to plant out.
At the moment we have in a small greenhouse, tomatoes (heirloom and hybrid), Basil, Parsley, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower (the all year round kidn of thing), beans, marigolds and zinnia, onion and spinach.
We will put the courgettes, peppers, pumpkins and cucumbers in next and this weekend we are straight into the garden put the peas, carrots, leeks and spring onion.
And then successive sowing of most crops. I am putting the second lot of tomatoe seedlings in and will be start with the corn seedlings too.

we planted our garden last weekend.
put in seed tape of carrot, radish, parsnip, spring onion, spinach and beetroot, put in seedling plants of brassica's and lettuces, put in our seed potatoes and yams and trimmed last years strawberry plants back a bit.
all we have left to plant is our tomato plants and to buy a zuchinni (if my seed growing isnt sucessful) and a cucumber plant but they will be in the green house so we could do it now if we wanted but nichols didn't have the variety we wanted.

I would like to plant something in the small patch of dirt I have beside my house (we have a 1/4 acre but the rest of it is all planted with bushes etc). It gets midday sun.
I am not very good at gardening (read: I hate weeding!) but I like the idea of having something to eat from the garden!
What are some foolproof things I could plant over the next couple of weeks??
After reading this, I'm thinking strawberries, carrots, and perhaps potatoes????

MuppetsMama how big is the space? And how long do you have sun on it?
If you are salad eaters you could do cherry tomatoes and lettuces. Or spinach?
I think there are loads of options - just depends on sun and what you like to eat.

Bumping this thread! Spring has sprung! So exciting seeing all the new green growth in the garden. This year I am hoping for my single avocado to ripen, my pomegranates and limes to fruit and for an abundance of raspberries & strawberries! Are you planting seeds/seedlings now? What are you planting?

We are lucky to live in a house with a conservatory, so I started my seeds in there and have just planted out seedlings in the new garden- cherry tomatoes, bok choy, peas, lettuce mix and a courgette. Also hoping to salvage our spinach plants as the bantam chooks loved eating them! We have a blueberry bush (in its first season) which has blossoms so hoping for a few blueberries this summer!
We have a lime tree, but most of the fruit has ripened already- envious of yours Kelz if you still have fruit!

Hi Ereynolds! I planted a couple of chilli and zucchini plants at the weekend - we've just had a hail drop! Hope they're ok We have two Bluberry bushes - full of blossom too. Apparently on their first year you are supposed to pick off any berries forming so the plant puts the energy into growing strong. I couldn't do it! We'll see what happens this year. We have a regular lime tree (small) and a Kaffir tree. The regular lime has not fruited at all and the Kaffir tree has one teeny lime about the size of a really small grape on it! Do you fence off the rest of your veges from the chooks?

Ah yes, I have been ignoring that part about blueberries... I just want some berries!! We had a small plant at our last house and it died so i'm super excited about this one!
We have a regular lime and its been (slowly) fruiting over winter. I think its in its 2nd-3rd year so we're pretty happy with how its done!
I hope your chilli and zuchinis are ok! I thought it was too cold to plant out chillis? I need to plant the chilli seeds I bought as none of the seedlings we brought from our last house have survived the move!
As we have bantams in our back yard, we put a small fence around the garden and they haven't jumped over it yet! They do obsessively dig in my herb garden though, so we might have to look at fencing that too- but at least they dont eat the herbs :) On a good note, we are getting a few lovely white eggs (with gorgeous yolks) every day so they must be finding some good stuff in the soil!
I am super excited about my veggie patch- in the past we've grown herbs and spinach really well, but not a lot else so are trying to do it better this year!

Eek! Another cold snap last night and I haven't put the cloche over my wee plants! Must do that later this arvo! It may well be too cold to plant out chillis - I just figured because they were at the garden centre that they'd be ok - but I'm sure I totally should have had them covered. I've been tempted a few times to get some chookies - but our section isn't totally fenced. And our garden is pretty large with the veg spread all over the place. Plus we have a new cat and her favourite thing to do is stalk the neighbours chickens! Such a gorgeous day! I wonder if I can talk my daughter into spending some time in the garden today

Kelz or anyone else, do you companion plant? Our wee seedlings have just started to look a bit moth eaten and I'm pretty sure our bantams can't get in there (otherwise everything would be GONE!). DS can't get in their either, but I just prefer not to put down poisons. Anyone got any suggestions?

Hey, No. I'm lucky enough if I'm organised enough to get the right things in the ground at the right time let alone planting them with their 'companions' So, they're not being eaten by snails/slugs?? You know you can get organic Slug Slam (but it's not called that)? What seedlings are they eating?

Don't you put in marigolds???
Aggghhhh I wanted out fruit trees trimmed & I think we've missed the boat cause they're all sprouting. We've got a mate that is an arbourist who was going to come around and do it. Must get DH to chase him up

I should have bought some marigold seedlings- I planted seeds and they are about 1cm at the moment!! Probably a bit early to plant them out? Might have to get some slug bait. They have been chomping on my lettuce mix, the peas (luckily I planted more seeds which are germinating) and the bok choy seedlings. Hopefully I can stop them before they do more damage!
AandCsmum, oh eek about the fruit trees! Hopefully they can still be done? What else do you have growing at the moment?
