Hospital Stay At Auckland Hospital

I was told this week that due to #2 being breech, and as #1 was also breech and a c-sect, #2 would be a c-sect too. I had #1 in Singapore so I dont know how things work here. I will be having baby at National Womens Health ( Auckland Hospital)

Just wondering, assuming everything goes ok, do we still transfer to birthcare? Or can we stay at the hospital? What is normal length of stay at the hospital? For #1 I had him late afternoon monday, and discharged Friday morning. I am starting to think i would feel more comfortable at the hospital at least for a couple of days just in case. Also are the hospital rooms private or shared?

I am due for c-sect in late sept, so things are starting to get very close.

If you want to transfer to birthcare you have two nights grace (where you can stay in the hospital) .. after that its pretty much your choice to either transfer for the remaining three days allowed or stay in the hospital. (or you can go home).

I stayed in the hospital for the entire week as I had a private room and I would have had to share at birthcare, so I didnt see the point.

(They may try to move you on .. but I just told them I didnt have any support at home and I wasnt comfortable going to birthcare as I was still in "pain")

Another quick question : Can husbands stay at hospital with you, especially the first night to help with bubs etc?

Unless bubs ends up being a late night emergency c-section, your hubby wont be allowed to stay the night, there are several hospital midwives and ward nurses available at the press of your buzzer to help out if and when needed.

Have you done a tour of the maternity ward yet? If you go and have a look around, you should be able to ask one of the staff on at the time what is provided. Middlemore only provided bedding, towels and nappies, the rest we had to bring ourselves (toiletries, clothing, wipes, snacks for inbetween meals etc)

FOOD! Take food or get your hubby to bring some in everyday. The care is great but the food is absolutely terrible. And that's every meal, not just dinner. They provided maternity pads. I don't think there were any toiletries so take your own soap/shampoo, toothpaste etc. I can't help you with the rest though - my daughter was in the NICU so they provide everything for them there.

Give them a ring and ask though. They don't encourage tours anymore, but yeah, they have quite a good virtual one.

i stayed at auckland after i had eden so 2.5 years ago now and they supplied pretty much everything. nappies - cloth and disposable - baby gowns, flannels, maternity pads... no wipes though but then i think they are too harsh for newborn babies anyway. and yep the food is horrible. i used to order three lots of mashed potatoes though for dinner cause i loved them!

I stayed in Auckland Hospital in March this year for 5 nights after a c-section, and DH was able to stay with me. The don't advertise that partners can stay, but if you ask, they can. I had a single room, so not sure if it's different if you're in a shared room.

I can't comment about the c section side of things but just wanted to say I stayed at Auckland Hospital for 4 days when I had my appendix out earlier this year, and I really really enjoyed the food lol it was great! Just another side there. I assume all the food is the same. So maybe don't worry too much about that

Ok bumping This old thread. Wondering if there is anyone out there who has had a c section at auckland this year? What is there policy now regarding staying? I had a c section there is 2009 and stayed in hospital for four nights. I am hoping to do the same next month for number two. Do they pressure you to transfer? Thanks
