Topic: What will be the chances.... Posted: 23 December 2011 at 9:15pm |
God help me if the next child has "issues"
Cooper had a reaction to something tonight, I don't know what, could be coconut or it could be rice bran oil. Only two different things around.
Had to use Zytec, he's now fast asleep with a sweat going on (like DH's hypoglycaemic night sweats)
He's reacted to Almond oil in the last month. So maybe now Coconut???

I hate to say it but Im guessing its highly likely that each kid will have allergy issues- we are certainly expecting a reapeat of the same with the next baby- not preg yet. After 2 kids with reflux, eczema, food allergies and intollerences. At least we are prepared- would be easier if each kid had issues with the same things tho- the guessing game is hard work!!

Alia doesn't have allergies does she? Reflux is meant to be more common in boys than girls so you might get lucky.
My plunket nurse did say when I was preg with #2 that she tends to see multiple allergy kids in families, rather than just the one.
I appear to have another little refluxer, but its definitely easier the second time round because you know what to look for and how to ease the pain for them.
Fingers crossed you have a healthy wee bub

Alia doesn't have anything like Cooper does but I do remember taking her off dairy when she was little, can't remember why now. She does have tolerance issues behavioural wise when she has too many preservatives etc. so everything in moderation for her is ok.
Huge difference is though was with her pregnancy, I didn't have dairy myself until the 3rd trimester where as with Cooper I ate it all the way through not realising that the reason was that I could eat it was cause my immune system wasn't fighting it. This time my body has let me know when it hasn't liked something so will be interesting over the next year or so.
I'm fully prepared that this one is going to have issues, was just having a wee meltdown the other night with an appearance of a spreading rash & using up the last of a Zyrtec bottle.
As Kellz said...it's that bloody guessing game!

I think there is some research out there that each subsequent baby gets less immunity than the previous, and if you get one refluxy baby you're likely to have more... I just clung to hope when pregnant with #2 that my friend who had 6 babies only dealt with reflux with her 1st, and maybe 4th?
But hey, at least you know how to respond to reactions. Your babies are very lucky to have you. *hugs*

This is my big worry too. Our DD has multiple food allergies, dairy, wheat, corn, soy, egg (anaphylactic), peanut (anaphylactic), treenut, banana, beef, pork, lamb, chicken, and highly salicylate sensitive. We can't cope with two moderate salicylate foods on the same day. It's hard hard work. Her specialist has told me that he's very confident that he has a diet that if I follow it, should absolutely minimise the chances of a sibling having similar levels of problems. Although I don't see a 'zero allergy' child as a possibility with out history! Good luck A&Csmum, hopefully your food aversions through pregnancy have been your body telling you what to avoid.
And yeah, oat milk kicks rice milks' behind! .

Wow Ceres, hopefully over time she'll grow out of some of them. Just recently I've trialled yoghurt with Cooper and there was no eczema the next day like he's had before. I'm just starting a full dairy challenge with him based of the result of the yoghurt so crossing fingers he's growing out of one issue!
Cross fingers on the diet, we base our diet via the food intolerance network as my DD is reactive to sals & preservatives. She's just come home from the beach with the grandparents & she's so jiggly, going to be a few fun filled days Is he saying the Feingold diet? Great that you've got a good specialist.

And the chances are highly likely
My Mum actually said to me last night that she wonders cause my body doesn't deal with dairy well that it can't process it properly so a higher concentration or the like ends up in my breastmilk? Sounds plausible!
Also we wondered if #1 might have had an issue but cause within a week of her birth I had really bad asthma & I cut it out fully and never went back on it, that it never showed with her where as with #2 I was off dairy for a week or so after his birth & then started back on it so his reactions were picked up at 6 weeks.
This time I can see the reflux that Greer has & the effects of me eating dairy products, I think if I went on a dairy rich diet for a week or two she'd be as bad as what Cooper was.
So here's to cutting out dairy 100% again, least this time around I know what I'm doing!

Oh no. Not what I wanted to hear. Hugs. Hopefully it's just dairy and she outgrows it within a short time x. I guess the advantage of 'having been there' is that you know what to look for so catch it earlier, so in that sense Greer is lucky. Your theory on the protein making it through in greater quantities in the BM, interesting - our dietician said that most babies can cope with the mum eating/drinking soy products as very little made it into the BM - but DD couldn't cope with my having soy at all - so maybe there is something to that.
How's Cooper doing on dairy? DD has recently been diagnosed with more allergies, sesame, coconut, and oats. And failed a food challenge for beef (her RAST had come back negative so we did an in-rooms challenge, but within 2 hours we had eczema and rash). It's always good to hear of children growing out of allergies!

He's doing great on milk, it's trying to increase the quantity & find other dairy sources that he likes. He does like Brie cheese over standard cheese though He still prefers the neocate so have limited it to two times a day & are slowly reducing the scoops that he has in an effort to wean him off it.
BUGGER!! Beef is a hard one! Is she ok on lamb? My friend in her 50s still gets really ill when she eats anything to do with beef, even chips cooked in beef fat!
3 years old was our magic age, hoping that wheat is ok by time he starts school.
We've had heaps less chucking with me on no dairy, now to get it out of our systems. Craving it so bad! Also discovered she gets really bad nappy rash when I've had dairy too, the burn your bum type rash!

Aw that sucks A&C's Mum (you need to be ACandG'sMum hehe). At least you know how best to tackle it but also you know what's ahead so that must be hard too. I hope things are going ok.
AFM Im glad to say my DS can now tolerate dairy :) (he was dairy intolerant and on neocate for first year, tried dairy and soy at 1 year and he had a bad reaction, but now at 17 months he seems to be able to handle it) and no more reflux, so there is hope :)

That's great to hear snugglebug, amazing there was such a difference in 5 months.
A&Csmum, LOL at the Brie! Expensive (and good) taste! It is tough readjusting to no dairy, I know. And soy yoghurt just isn't the same. Ironically, DD is more allergic to soy than dairy so we don't allow any soy products in the house and do have dairy (fortunately she's not at an age yet she can get into the fridge, I imagine we'll have a whole host of new challenges at some point there). In her latests RASTs, she tested negative to lamb so we are doing an in-room challenge shortly. TBH, I'm not that confident given she was neg to beef but still clinically reactive. Would LOVE to be proven wrong though. You never realise just how much cross contamination is out there until there are allergies in the family, beef fat for frying! Wouldn't have crossed my mind until you mentioned it (DD doesn't eat out at all, so we haven't had to cross that bridge, so to speak), but seems like an obvious trap now, so many traps everywhere!
