My personal opinion is that it's better for you to be a pain in the bum to her (make her check, give her the third degree etc.) rather than stress yourself with the unknown. I'm sure that everything probably is ok but her job is to answer these questions and it sounds a bit like she's palming you off TBH.

Alternately you could rock up to the hospital and tell them you think you're in labour. Even if it proves to be a false labour she or someone else will be obliged to check you out.

Or do you have an OB who has talked with you about the c/s? Ask him for a second opinion on your contractions if they are still going in the morning.

I don't think they can reschedule you to an earlier elective date, only give you an emergency c/s. You should have plenty of warning if you do properly go into labour (if you aren't already). I went into labour for my #1 baby, had contractions from 9am to 6pm when my waters broke and I started haemorraging. Still there was no fetal distress until around 8pm which was when I got prepped for c/s. I had dilated 4cm.

If it were me, I'd be damn well making them do monitoring, full or not! It only takes 1/2 hour on the CTG to check what the contractions are doing, and IMO it's worth it if for no other reason than to put your mind at rest!
When I was preg with the gremlins and had a false labour at 26 weeks my OB hissed and cussed about having to get up at 1am and come in to the hospital to check on me, but at the end of the day, that's what they get paid for and if they don't like it, they need to find a new job!

I agree with the other ladies - MAKE them check you! Even if it means just turning up at the hospital and refusing to leave!

Damn some MWs are useless! Gives the profession a bad name

I'm going to come from a different point of view. Please don't be offended just trying to show where the midwife is coming from.

To be honest it doesn't sound like your in labour and even if it is only early labour they still can't tell if it will continue or stop completely. As busymum said they won't bring the elective forward only make it an emergency and since you have problems with your birth canal not uterus you might get fully dialted no problems. They say there is no room at the hospital, chances are thats true so unless you are actually in labour if they put you in it means you are taking somebodys space who truely needs it. I don't think this is a case of the midwife trying to be nasty just the fact that there really isn't any room. Unfortunately because of the lack of beds/midwives if you do have to have an emergency you won't be priority over someone who has been in labour longer so would have to wait anyway. If you are worried and your contactions get worse/closer together definately keep at her.

There is a huge shortage of midwives all over the country so before everyone just assumes every midwife is terrible think about their workload. To work full time a midwife sees 50-55 women a year, I was talking to one the other day who had 70 just because if she didn't then these women wouldn't even have a midwife. I'm sure they would love to be thorough with everyone but unfortunately it doesn't work out that way so they have to do their best to judge what is urgent and what isn't. If you are feeling like you aren't getting proper care then by all means complain, it might even make the government do something about the lack of midwives. Soory rant/threadjack over its just something I feel quite passionate about.

Hmm maybe it was labour and she's busy with the new baby

Rach you raise some good points but I still think the MW should have checked her rather than doing a diagnosis over the phone. I don't doubt NSH was full - they always are.

I see where you're coming from Rach, and I agree, it probably was a false labour, but there is still a chance that it isn't/wasn't and the midwife does have an obligation to check it out. If, God forbid, it was labour and the baby died because she didn't act quickly enough then the onus would be on the midwife.

For example, my wee babe had been quiet all day yesterday and this morning, I knew that she was probably fine, and when I spoke to my m/w she was sure that bub was fine too but she still arranged a quick CTG to check on her and make sure. Of course baby is fine, but had there been a problem and we hadn't checked it out then my midwife would have been hauled over the coals. Yes it was a PITA, but the risks of NOT doing it outweigh the inconvenience.

Hi guys,

Still no baby, contractions have stopped, well they did from Sunday... felt a few today but nothing regular as yet. Going to midwife tomorrow for weekly appointment and I'm going to ask her to check me, not sure if it's relavent now that the contractions are regular but I'd feel more comfortable knowing.

The contractions move the baby down real low and I now find it extremely uncomfortable to bend and move around especially when laying down.

I'm feeling like this baby is going to stay put until the 28th, which I guess is a good think as my mum is coming over from Oz on the 25th and she was getting upset that she wouldn't be here to greet him when he's first born.

Thank you all for your support and comments and I will keep you all updated. I will be making time tomorrow in my appointment tomorrow to ask when does natural labour need to stop before a planned c-section.

Well, he has arrived. He decided that once Nana arrived from Australia on Friday he'd give her a little sleep and then he decided to break my waters around 7.30 Saturday Morning, went off to the hospital and he arrived at 2.03pm weighing 9 pound, and measuring 53cm. He's a little sweetie and I enjoyed the time I was able to bond with him while in hospital (besides the pain).
