Topic: swim schools? Posted: 18 June 2007 at 1:07pm |
After seeing Gabriel at the pools the other day and have no fear about how deep the water was or anything like that i am keen to get him into swimming lessons. i cant swim myself and think it would be good if he learnt. For those of you who do this what school do you use and how do you find it. Also is learning to float something they do or is it all using flotation aids ??

Deb, I have worked at a pool that has swimsation at it so if you have any questions PM and I can get the answers for you. But a little bit about it. They will do an assessment for you and then put him in a class. Each level has little goals (eg floating on back, dog paddle, blowing bubbles) and once they are passed then you move up to the next level. They have 3 classes which parents hop in the pool as well but once they are in Tiny Turtle parents don't need to hop in anymore.
They use noodles and boards to help with floating.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

I took Jake to swim school from between the ages of 1 year and 18 months. In all honesty, they didn't do too much. He LOVED the water and enjoyed the classes, but in terms of confidence, he already has too much!
As Gabriel is older than that, might be worthwhile. They ARE pricey though. I know our local SPARC runs cheap lesson, maybe check them out first?

My daughter has been going to "SwimGym" since she was 1. We take her to Lloyd Elsmore in Pakuranga, the difference it has made to her swimming and her water confidence has been awesome. Fully recommend it.

Maya's a Flying Fish, she is learning forward and backward 'arm circles' and breaststroke.
The first class she was in after she turned 3 (without me in the water) was Starfish, she skipped Tiny Turtles, and in the Starfish class they work on floating independently front and back, diving for objects, kicking etc. Like Mummy_becks said they use boards and noodles as flotation aids, but the aim is to get them floating/swimming independently.
I know our local pool does "trial classes" where you can observe a class and see what they do before you commit, might be worth looking into.
