Topic: Help with 6yr old... Posted: 27 September 2007 at 3:27am |
Ok so my DF and I are caring for our 6yr old nephew for a while as his Mum has just had a new baby, and was in need of a break. Now, while we only have him for 10days this time, it may be that we have him a lot more in the future. So, I'm having trouble finding things to occupy him thru the day that will also be educational and not just plonking him in front of the telly all day. He doesn't really get any nurturing at all at home, and isn't a very cuddly child, but it seems that he wants to be. He just seems very guarded and needs to be prompted to be affectionate.
So far we have come up with : playing at the river (runs thru the back yard, fenced off tho), Xbox (not my choice, but DF finds it easy), getting him to take photos and short videos of his time here to take back to Mum on a DVD, writing a letter to Nana, coloring in, writing a story, baking cookies with Uncle, puzzles, creative play (dress ups and the like), and a few others I seem to have forgotten.
Since we have been TTC for so long we are fully set up for kids, but seem to be a bit at a loss for a child who isn't very affectionate, and to be honest, has been let away with murder for so long at home. He is usually shouted at a lot at home for the smallest of things, so he seems to be appreciating the change of discipline. I love him to bits and really hope we can have a positive influence on him during his stay.
He has been very good behaviourally, which is unusual for him, but we have found out that in the week before he came down south to us to stay his behaviour and participation and manners at school (and at home) improved dramatically when he was told he had to be a good boy if he wanted to come and stay. So that was really sweet.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated, really just looking to be interactive without employing the television!
Thanks in adavance!

Lego/duplo/blocks! Constructive play like that, where he uses his hands to make something. You can get toy cars really cheap ($2 shop/Warehouse etc). Use cardboard boxes and felts to make a "town" to drive the cars all around.
Put a mop and a broom (or similar) on the back of two kitchen chairs that face outwards. Throw a blanket over the top - instant hut!
Ummm... I'll ask Kiya when she's up what other things she can think of.

the library... take him and let him pick some books out... and maybe you can find some craft things to do too.
re the affection some kids just dont go in for that kind of thing...but the more affectionate you and your partner are towards each other it may rub off on him. give him a cuddle in the morning as part of him getting up. it might grow on him. but if it isnt something he is used to and isnt going to get at home then you may not want to go too overboard.

Kiya says that the boys in her class like to play war games,
and to kick and throw balls around,
play tiggy/tag (whatever you choose to call it) and stuck-in-the-mud,
and some of them play Polly Pocket with the girls.
Most of the boys like to play with playdoh,
and they like to watch movies.
Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone, a lot of good ideas in there. Will be doing some craft things with him tomorrow, so he is looking forward to that.
We went to see the glow worms tonight, so he was rapt that he got to stay up a bit later than usual. We got to almost the whole way to the spot along the track when he got scared of the dark (we had a torch but had to turn it off to see the bugs) and had a bit of a panic attack. So my partner gave him a piggy back ride back home, and he felt a bit better.
So will take the above on board, and will dig out a few boxes and get a few toy cars tomorrow and have some fun!
THANK YOU!

Wow what an eventful week it has been! We have had SO much fun with him, but alas have to send him home on Friday.
We have had a lot of fun with creative play, play doh, story writing, trips to the park and down to the river, blocks, toy cars, fun educational puzzles (his favorite would you believe), reading, some days watching the kids holiday movie, srory writing, drawing/coloring in, and loads more I can't even remember.
Tomorrow night we are putting the pup tent up in his room and he is going to 'camp out' in there as his last night. So he will have his sleeping bag and torch, plus some books n things, and we might light the fire and toast marhmellows if I find the time to get to the shops.
We have made a cuddle before bed a routine thing, and he reminds us if we forget! He has really come out of his shell over the past nearly 2weeks, it has been such a joy to have him around. He really started to miss his Mum a few days ago, so we have drawn up the days of the week on the white board so he can cross off a day each morning when he wakes up. This has really helped him.
Thanks everyone for all your advice, I have really taken it onboard, and it has made us realise even more so that having a baby is what is right for us.
