Topic: Narrow or Obstructed Cervix Posted: 09 December 2011 at 3:10pm |
Hi
I'm just wondering if there is anyone else out there with a narrow or obstructed cervix.
A little bit about my story.......
My husband and I are both in our mid 30's and have been TTC #1 for a couple of years now. We have seen a specialist at Fertility Associates, been through an array of tests and up until now have been diagnosed with 'Unexplained Infertility'.
Today I went into to have my HSG to check that the uterus and fallopian tubes are normal, however, the doctor was unable to insert the catheter through my cervix to release the contrast dye. He said that I either have a very narrow cervix or there could be some obstruction not allowing anything to go through. He is writing up his report for our specialist but it looks like there will be further investigations needed.
We are hoping to get in to see our specialist before Christmas, but I was just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation and what their outcome was.
Thanks

Hi mellowpuff, my OBGYN attempted to do an hsg in sept when I had my lap surgery. They told me they couldn't get the catheter in & that my cervix was tight. They didn't really give me any answers as to why. I have since found out that it should be done before ovulation & mine was done 4 days before AF. I'm heading back next week for them to try again. Not a lot of help but i'd be interested to hear what happens for you.

Hi Lou
I'm amazed that they did your HSG towards the end of your cycle. I had mine done at our local radiology clinic and they were adiment that it had to be done before cycle day 11 (I had it done on CD9) due to the risk of being pregnant.
I rang fertility associates and it's not looking good for getting in to see our specialist before Christmas but we are hopeful. Anyway, after spending the day with my friend Dr Google, it looks like I will be in for a laparoscopy. It's so hard waiting to see the specialist. The radiologist that did the proceedure was good but he isn't a fertility specialist so didn't really want to discuss what might be wrong. So ofcourse I am now thinking the worst and I have to say it's a little scary.
Thanks for your reply and I will let you know how I get on.

Yeah, crazy huh! So now I have to go back to an appointment next week and suggest they try again before ovulation!! I am annoyed too as it would've been so much easier to have it done while under general, but oh well.
I want to have it done as we have an appt with FA at the end of January and we're going to look at IUI (and eventually IVF) and there's no point going down that path if there's a blockage somewhere!
I think Jmac (hopefully she lurks soon!) had the same sort of issue and had some scar tissue removed which helped. Hopefully she'll be able to add more soon.
Hope you get to see your specialist soon and get things underway. It'll probably be more reassuring to talk to someone fertility minded about it. Good luck and keep me up to date

Hi mellowpuff,
I have a very tight and crooked cervix due to scar tissue from a cone biopsy to remove cells after a very abnormal smear. TTC for 2 years before specialist found the problem. First round of IUI was really difficult to get the catheter in, nurse couldn't get it so had to get FS. BFN, so next cycle went under general and had a cervical dilation to help stretch the cervix and also used a camera to have a look around. Pretty easy procedure and no real pain or anything afterwards. Next round of IUI there were still some difficulties getting the catheter in but not nearly as bad as the first time and they changed to an IVF catheter which was a lot easier. Still BFN, but trying another round this month.
Specialist has said if we manage to get pregnant then have a natural birth, that should right the problem and it shouldn't be an issue next time (fingers crossed). Could be similar for you.
Good luck seeing your specialist before Xmas, I know how frustrating it can be when you are just waiting for some answers!

After 2 1/2 years of treatment and IVF my heart was ripped out again when Jeremy was born sleeping at 21 weeks.

Hi Mellowpuff, I'm going for an hsg on Thursday and I'm a bit concerned about it. I have a pretty munted entrance to my cervix from a couple of different biopsies and sometimes they have difficulty getting the catheter through for our IVF transfers (but do get there).
I had a pipelle a couple of months ago (and have another one planned before our next transfer) and it was horrible as they had to try many different things to get the catheter through. I think there's lots of girls with narrowed cervix's rather than necessarily an obstruction, but I guess the specialist will sort it out for you. A lap may be the next step .... I asked about lap instead of hsg but FS wanted that first as it's less invasive and cheaper.
Don't know if that's of any help, sorry!

5 IVF/ICSI Cycles - 10 embryo's, 8 transfers, all BFN's.
Our journey to parenthood is over, and we join the unfortunate many for whom IVF does not work.

I went for an HSG week before last - they were unable to get the cathater the whole way up either. We have a specalist appt with FA at the beginning of April. The dr who did my HSG said there were a few reasons that may have been (mentioned the reasons listed in earlier posts) and that perhaps our specalist could look into finding more info by getting an ultrasound or something under general anestetic done??
Has anyone had either of these procedures done to find out more info?
This was the first real thing/test (apart from blood tests) I have had to do - we are using a sperm donor but my bloods have shown up with a high FSH level
