Just wondering, how safe are antidepressants to take when you are BFing?
My OB made a comment it was ok - but wanted to know, does anyone out there do it?
I am not on them now but am prone to depression and had PND last time round so am fully expecting it again this time.

Hi,
I was on Citalopram during my first pregnancy and while I breastfed DD1 for 13 months and it was perfectly safe.
I am now pregnant and still on them - albeit a much higher dose but my OB checked with Mental health and it is safe and they believe that it is much better than a stressed mummy with PND.
Fingers crossed you dont suffer with it again it is a real pain.
My doctor who is an OBGYN is having me do a slow decrease in hormones - so instead of the large drop in hormones we all get after birth which can result in PND she has me on a course of Progesterone, so hopefully that will help

Oh thanks guys! I am hoping not to get it but you know, I would rather be informed now and that way, I can make the decision to go back on them if I need without stressing about that at the same time.

I breast fed on paroxetine as that seemed to have the lowest absorption rate into breast milk of the SRI range... I took it for the 6 months i breast fed, well expressed and bottle fed.

I'm on a tricyclic and still breastfeeding, have been on it since lil miss was 5 mths. I stubbornly resisted taking anything because I was breastfeeding until I got so unwell I almost ended up in hospital and my specialist said that it was either take the meds and keep feeding or stop feeding and take the meds coz not taking them wasn't an option.
It hasn't affected her at all, and I'm on a pretty high dose.

I am also on citalopram. This is pregnancy no4 and first time that we have made the decision to stay on the meds. Best thing we have ever done, not got bad fingers crossed this time. I also looked into breastfeeding while on c. Been told it perfectly fine.
