Topic: What did you do to prepare for IVF Posted: 14 May 2011 at 10:15pm |
Hi, just wondering what all you ladies did 3 months prior to prepare for you IVF. I kind of feel like I should be doing something but not to sure what. FA recomended taking elevit and DF taking menevit as we have MFI. Any help on a budget would be great.
Thanks

IMO, nothing different to what you're already doing. Without sounding negative, if you're already at IVF stage, the best thing you can do is keep on life as normal, take your folic acid, cut out caffeine, but most importantly, carry on as usual. We did nothing extra to prepare, in fact, we started IVF about 2 weeks after deciding to go for it, but recognised it might be the last time we were childless, and therefore should make the most of being able to be spontaneous e.g. go to the movies, go out to dinner. All the kind of things that are much harder when kids come along. We just really carried on life as normal as much as possible, and listened to the advice from FA, which is pretty much what you've been told.

Hi rachb, we also did ivf about a month after the initial appointment with Repromed, so didn't have three months to prepare. However we knew DH had bad SA results so he cut down alcohol and caffeine about. 2 months before, I started doing yoga as I haven't done any exercise for. 6 months and felt it was something that was helping me to cope mentally if nothing else! Both DH and I also did acupuncture before our first ivf. However our cycle didn't work :( and we were kicking ourselves for not doing MORE prepapration before ivf. As soon as we got BFN DH started exercising too as he also felt it was something he should have been doing already! He also changed to boxer shorts, we restarted acupuncture, got a whole lot of supplements recommended for MFI and have now started seeing a naturopath also who has put us both on herbs.
I guess everyone has a different story. Some would say do nothing and just eat healthy and cut out alcohol, and it's good.... But if ivf doesn't work.....would you then think that there were other things you should have tried/done before ivf to prepare yourself better? In the end though there'd aren't any certain prescriptions that say that if you do this it will definitely work..... So I think you just have to follow your heart, do some research, see what others have done and see what appeals to you, which of those things sit well with you and would make you feel ore positive a bouts what's coming up! Another thing I did was get a relaxation/visualization CD which I was listening before and during the treatment, again helped me to Cope mentally, to turn off the negative talk in my head and relax a bit. I was also reading a lot of positive resources online, listening to podcasts by circle and bloom and by sue dumais (free on iTunes).
Good luck Hun!
Itchy feet, did both your pregnancies work after the first I round? Or are they miracle natural bubs?

Both our pregnancies are IVF related, if we were to fall pregnant naturally it would be a major miracle. We tried IUI without success, then one round of ICSI. The fresh embryo transfer didn't work, then one FET that is my son, and then another FET that didn't work, and one frozen blastocyst that did. I realise we've been incredibly lucky, but then I think of what it was like to not have any success either, and I do remember how hard infertility was, especially when the first fresh embryo failed to take. At the time it felt like the last hope had been taken away, but we waited two months until I felt strong enough to try again, then BFP! The ironic part is that our first BFP was during an enormously stressful time in my life, and I was literally working in the waiting room before I did the transfer!
SW, you're probably right, if you think it might make a difference, then it's worth trying, but the whole experience showed me that no matter how much science and willingness is put into trying, there is still so much that is outside our control, and that's the hardest part to deal with.

My advice would be more about preparing yourself mentally for the process and either outcome. Yes gave up caffeine, alcohol processed foods and ate well adding in lots of nuts, fish and antioxidant rich foods but we were unsuccessful. I wasnt prepared for that and I now realise that I had put so much pressure on myself for it to work that it could have been a reason why it didnt.
I need to know that I have another plan, positivity is exactly what you need but a dose of reality doesnt go amiss either!
As sunshine says do what feels right for you and dont do anything that would give you any reason for regret later. People thought I was silly giving up chocolate but for me I didnt want that doubt, so did it but for other ladies living normally makes them that much more relaxed.
I think that making any changes 3 months prior to yoru cycle is a great idea as big changes in diet, excercise etc. can have an impact on your cycle too. If you are 3 months away we may end up being cycle buddies, I'm due to start again in Sept. Good luck x

thank you so much ladies for your advice. I have been reading the forums and i guess it freaked me out with all these people having accupuncture etc.
I have just brought a book of trade me about nuturing yourself during IVF so will read this before we start.
Lsttcdiver - we are due to have our first IVF in November so won't be far behind you. Good luck with yours x
