Topic: Bedtime help please Posted: 16 August 2008 at 7:21pm |
I am struggling with getting Andrew to bed at the moment. As it is cold here and Nigel is away I am happy for him to sleep in my bed (he is like a big hot water bottle next to me). I put him to bed and he watches a DVD, but when that finishes he wants another one and this is getting close to 8pm. I know he is really tired so there is no point arguing with him (I pick my battles type of thing) so I put another one on for him and he is usually asleep by 9pm.
I think 9pm is quite late for him to go to sleep, any ideas on how I can get him back to sleep at 7.30 like I used too???

My boys seem to take more and more if they can. They are only allowed to watch a DVD in bed on Saturday night as I get the same result you have they don't go to sleep, keep getting out of bed, or wanting another dvd on and then when I do try to say go to sleep now I get the old "I need a drink", I need to go toilet", or "I'm not tired". So during the week we have a bedtime routine of bath after dinner at 6-6.30, milk, book then teeth etc to be in bed with lights out by 7.30 (this works very well for my 3 1/2yo but the 2yo trys it on some nights).
Also my older boy loves games and competitions so we have races into bed and a "see who can sllep the longest" competition.....works really well considering a few months back I was posting they won't sleep past 5am ish, now through to 6.30-7am!!!
Ooh, I've just noticed you're off to Oz soon so I wouldn't stress much about any sleep patterns beofre you go as they're all about to go out the window anyway........speaking from experience, my parents live in Sydney and trips overseas always take a bit to recover from.

Cool thanks Sara, so you think it would be best to wait till we come back from Oz and then start with a plan of attack???
He is really good at sleeping in in the morning which I think is because of the late going to sleep.

Yip definatley wait till you get back before trying to get anything sorted re bedtimes. I find that when we're over there it's best to simply let them stay up late till they crash themselves otherwise you're in for some very early mornings. We tried the old keep routines the same and for us this did not work, I was getting up at 3am for the day . So yeah, can the routines, relax and sort it out again when you get back.

what about getting him a lamp and letting him read in bed for half an hour? puts me to sleep.
if the budget can stretch, Mum just got my kids an electric blanket each - $149 down to $90 - completely waterproof - you can through in the machine and even the drier. both kids are fans - day one

Those elec blankets sound so cool Liz! I never knew you could get ones like that.
Maybe you could try the DVD at a different time of the day? TV stimulates the brain, making it harder to go to sleep afterwards.
