Topic: Regression? Posted: 27 August 2008 at 8:18pm |
Okay, off an on at some times we have had a little problem with Paris regressing and beginning to have a few wet days. it's usually only a little accident etc. However, I dunno, I don't know why i am more worried this time, but since paris started school 2 weeks ago i think i can count the number of "dry" days she has had at school on about half a hand if that. she has pants and underwear spare in her bag for such oocasions but never changes them, which annoys and kinda grosses me out even more. Today her pants were wringing wet, and now she has started wetting a bit at night too, not the whole bed but usually i go to get her up about 10.30pm and put her on the loo, and lately she has already been a bit wet by then these days.
She hasn't got a uti, she DOES know where every single lot of toilets in the school is, we have had talks a-plenty about keeping clean and making sure she changes if she does wet to stop her getting smelly and sick. all to no avail. We try not to make a big thing about it but it's really irking me, this is the longest it has gone of for ever.
I don't want to limit water intake etc, as - really - since beginning school she has hardly even eaten or had drink - she used to suck back tons of water each day, now i am lucky if she has even touched her drink bottle. AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!
I had heard that theory that the more a child drinks the more their bladder is used to holding so it trains their bladder to be able to hold. I wonder if because she is hardly drinking that has anything to do with it, but the other part of me thinks that this tends to be her way of reacting to thing like change or well, anything really.
It is frustrating the heck outta me. Anyone else had this with their kids when starting school, how long did it last?
I am going to have a talk with her teacher tomorrow and make her aware of what is happening. I know that she is a big girl and should not need to be reminded to go to the toilet but what else can i do?
ideas?

The only thing I was going to say was talk to her teacher about it.
I don't know if there are any books out there about older children and toileting but could be worth it to have a look at the online catalogue on the library to see if they do.

i would've thought the teacher would notice and have a quiet word to her about getting changed?

Yeah, talk to the teacher because I'm sure they have dealt with this heaps of times. Does Paris have a change packed that she can easily access and does she change herself when wet? I know it must be hugely frustrating but my guess is that it's likely nervousness and/or tiredness with newly starting school.

Do you think it is stress related or could it be that she is just so busy that she doesn't want to stop to go to the toilet?
I've been having a similar problem lately with Ella not using the toilet at kindy. She doesn't change her wet clothes and has been getting all red and sore from it.
Last time I asked her why she didn't use the toilet or change her knickers and she said her friend didn't want her to??
I'm guessing that means she was too busy playing with her buddies and didn't want to leave them to go, could it be the same for Paris? Or maybe she is feeling a bit too shy to say that she needs to go, and then too embarrassed to change once she's wet?
I've been practising with Ella, what to say when she needs to go and she told me that she did it today so fingers crossed its sinking in.
Good luck Janine!

Charlotte went through a similar phase not long ago- I found it was that she didn't want to 'miss out' at school by going to the toilet so she just wet herself Like the others have said, I would have a word to the teacher- thats what I did and they just reminded her to go a couple of times a day and it solved itself pretty quickly after that.

Maybe the teacher could quietly remind her to go to the toilet throughout the day, hopefully that might help her become more comfortable using the toilets at school?
Also, are all the toilets shared amongst the whole school? Cos older kids can sometimes lurk in the toilets, making it a daunting place for little kids to go.
Fingers crossed she feels better soon.

How did you go with the teacher Janine?
Maya wets occasionally but in her case it's usually coz she leaves it too late to get their in time and pees on the toilet floor before she can get her knickers down. Drives me mad!

Yep i did see the teacher about it, she said that she'd found alot of them were doing it because they have no toilet block attached to the classrooms, they have to walk acros tot he next classroom block to go, so forget to go and forget to go during lunch break etc.
Paris is steadily getting better mostly but still won't change herself if she wets a little. and still leaves it too late when playing, expecially now that she's getting even more into involved role playing etc.
mostly better though.
It just seems weird cos i'm having no probs with ayja

Maybe it is the whole transition to school thing too, Paris does sound like quite a sensitive wee soul so maybe it's all just a big adjustment. Pleased to hear it's getting better!
