Topic: Follicles Posted: 19 November 2008 at 9:29pm |
Can anyone give me some idea, or clues, as to how many follicles it is normal for a woman to have on a normal monthly cycle?
I had an U/S today on day 14 of a 28 day cycle, and it showed 25 follicles on my left ovary, and 13 on my right, none of which are dominant (and therefore I'm highly unlikely to ovulate this month). I completely forgot to ask whether this is normal, but the sonographer did mention it was high, especially where there are no dominant follicles. The sizes ranged from 2mm to 7mm, and a normal ovulatory cycle should be a follicle around 18mm. But is this amount of follicles actually normal?
I don't have another appointment with my specialist until next Friday, and everything I've read on the net suggests this could possibly mean PCOS.
Can anyone help??

Hi there - confusing aye?? I am still figuring things out as I go.
I have no idea how many follicals I have an a normal cycle, but my first cycle on clomid I had 5 follicals which I was told was too high risk of multiples so not to try. This cycle my clomid was reduced and I had 2 follicals and today have just confirmed I ovulated. This cycle my biggest or dominant follicals was 21mm.
I have also heard of people on IVF with a ton of follicals and I also read somewhere that lots of little follicals might be PCOS.
I also just remember that on my last (this) cycle of clomid at my scan they said that I had 2 dominate big follicals and one about 12mm and then a few (I think 3) really really little ones....but they didnt seem concerned.
Some many questions and no answers aye!! it is soo tough..... I really help others on here can offer more help than me and I wish you luck with your specalist next week.

Thanks Bree...that's what I figured - 25 and 13 is rather a lot!!!!! And I had done some searching on the net that showed a lot of smaller follicles with no dominant ones can be a sign of PCOS. Was hoping someone might be able to tell me differently LOL

I think I used the wrong wording for the title - maybe should have mentioned PCOS in it as well LOL

Kate I do have heaps of follicles and yep I have PCOS, but of course it doesn't mean you do, I'm just telling you my experience.
Basically for me, each time I try to ovulate it doesn't work and the egg becomes cystic and that's what all the little follicles are. Well that's the way it was described to me anyway.

Thanks emz. I can find so much about follicles on the net, but nothing that says what's "normal"...and I'm an impatient wench at the best of times LOL
