Topic: Getting a place at Kindy Posted: 26 February 2009 at 1:53pm |
DS2 turned 3 in December. He currently attends creche but now that I am home on maternity leave I want him to go to the local kindy. Did the enrolement form and the local kindy have advised that he probably wont get a place until approx AUG/SEP mainly because they have a lot of four year olds that will be moving to school at this stage therefore creating places. Guess it is a bit of a dominos effect.
Has anyone else struck such long waiting lists? I'd be going spare if I didn't have him at creche but then maybe its my fault, maybe I should have had him on the waiting list earlier. Just curious

when I rang our local kindy they told me to enrol him just after his 2nd birthday and the kids on the waiting list would be taken in age order once he got to 3. I would assume that as you have only enrolled your son now you will have to wait.
My understanding is that kindys are not zoned so you could possibly try the next closest kindy and see if they have any places available

Yeah they take them in age order, not when you enrol. We had Matt on the waiting list at Blockhouse Bay kindy just after he turned 2 1/2 & the average start date then was 3 years & 2 months. Just asked last week & the average start date has stretched out to 3 years & 5 months. He turns 3 on saturday so that would mean he wouldn't start until end of July/early Aug. However, we rang Green Bay kindy (next suburb over) & they'd had a few kids leave recently, so he's actually starting there this Tuesday. So you could try a different kindy & see what they say - only thing is you are only allowed to be on 1 waiting list at a time, so you'd need to get them to sort that out too.

Thanks.....I'm really keen for him to be in the local kindy as we aren't to involved in the local community and I think its quite important so I'll wait and see what happens....guess you never know, it might happen sooner!

Its usual to expect 18months down here, as spaces become available in the overs, the unders move on, which creates the room in the unders side for new ones. Let them know that you want to get in to the local kindy to be involved in the community though, and that you'd be willing to go in and help some days as a volunteer (if you are), and they may be able to give you preference.
