As soon as another child comes near him or takes something from him, he will hit them. I keep telling him to use gentle hands, but it is not working. Does anyone have any suggestions.

How old is he? We tried time out etc for our son, it worked for a short period of time then he would revert back. Eventually his big brother got sick of him hitting and knocked him for a six one night. Not ideal but he got the picture and very rarely hits now. Other than that not much help sorry.

time out would work - also removing the toy and explaining you are removing it because he cant play nicely.

Dr Phil had a great idea - depending on his age of course you find out what his currency is - for example - does he have a favourite toy or does he like to do something special - if he hits then you take this away from him. Then he needs to earn it back with good behaviour.

another thing i was told could work with not good behaviour is to get a box or something big and put it in ur wardrobe and explain that for each not nice behaviour a toy goes into the box until he starts being good again then the toys come bak out.

we use the gentle hands thing, but also when paris does something we don't like, we use the "that's not what we do, how about doing this".. and help her, model the behaviour you want, and explain a little or praise when they do it. ie if she hits ayja, we says "that's not what we do, how about you give her kisses and cuddles instead, she likes that better" and when she does it, it's great now cos ayja will smile, and we can say "see, Ayja likes it better when you are gentle" after using this since she was little it's even now got to the point where we can usually ask her what she should do instead and she'll usually know.

if she doesn't then we use time out - put her on the matress in her room, and tell her she must sit there till she can play nicely, without hitting or throwing or whatever. if she starts again once she gets back out, we warn her she'll go back, suggest what she should do again, but put her back if need be. very rarely does she need to go back more than once. twice if she's really pushing it that day.

wow you are lucky Janine, it can take many trips to the bedroom before Sophie gives up, by which time we are both a bit of a mess.  The joys of a strong willed child - one day (when she leaves home?) I'll appreciate that trait

lol we had a real tantrum the other night though, mike told paris she could have her dummy cos she was whingy when he got home and he didn't want to listen to it (geez, home 5 mins!) we have a rule that it's only for bed. so i took it off her. boy did we hear about it. she got so riled up she was pretty much hyperventialting. but nope, mummy was still the meanie and didn't give the dummy. - bet mike wished he had just put up with a little bit of whinging.

i think when a new sibling gets there, they have to learn very quickly what is acceptable.. and probably go through the hitting stage a bit faster than kids the don't have any younger siblings. I mean if they do it to the newbie they get pulled up about it quick as.. so they learn pretty fast not to do it. (although still try their luck sometimes!)

I took briana to daycare on thursday morning - when we arrived there were a few toddlers younger than bree - she went up to them and started to stroked their heads and was extremely gentle with them - it was good to see - especially because she has her own sibling on the way - i can only hope she is just as great with her brother or sister.
