Topic: how long to eliminate? Posted: 11 August 2008 at 8:52pm |
Oh dear... I've come to realise that Ella's bottom problem (3 - 4 incredibly foul smelling sloppy poos a day for the last couple of months) really can't be put down to 'maybe teething' or 'just one of those things' anymore... not since she also developed a small patch of eczema by her mouth around the same time, and it just won't go away. Most likely culprit would be soy I'm, thinking, as the arrival of her too-frequent poos went hand in hand with her eating soy yoghurt at lunch every day. I've let her eat plenty of it, as she adores it and it's got protein & calcium. She's also just started to drink soy milk at breakfast time. This is the most soy she's ever had, as she'd been soy-free until after her 1st birthday.
I'll start by eliminating the soy yoghurt, (because TMI... I myself could never eat too much yoghurt at once IYKWIM), and then if nothing changes, the soy milk (good lord I'm loathed to do that - it doesn't leave many friggin options does it?!?). I don't know how long something needs to be eliminated for before I can say it's not that - someone on here must know! TIA

...also - she's had a RAST and skin prick test and soy didn't show as an allergen in either. I'm wondering if she has an intolerance to it though.
GAH! I hope not!! She won't drink Neocate in anything from a bottle so she'll be on that blimmin bottle 'till she's 12!

I'd take it away for a week, and then slowly reintroduce it and see f the symptoms recur.
Maya wasn't allergic to soy, she was intolerant to it, it used to give her chronic diarrohea too. She was well able to tolerate cows milk before she could cope with soy.

Oh crap!!!!!! Maybe the soy is why Spencer's bum is runny as well His test came up negative to soy but he also has runny bum and has got patches of ezcema behind his ears that just won't go, he's been having the yoghurt and also some soy cream cheese.
Let me know how you get on, think we might try cutting it out for a bit too.

Thats exactly what happened with Hannah! She was getting stuck into the soy yoghurt as her RAST was negative, and she had foul nappies too. She was fine just with the soy milk, but she just couldnt handle the yoghurt. So I stopped that for a few weeks and her runny bum stopped, tried yoghurt and it happened again so stopped. Then after a few weeks I tried her again, but only half a liitle punnet every two days - cos she loves the stuff and its so easy - and she was fine. Now she can have a whole one every day.
So I would guess Ella and Spencer are the same. Good luck

Thanks, guys. Ella didn't have any soy yoghurt yesterday (but had soy milk) and no bottom problems either, and that patch of eczema is fading even, so I'll give her a week without it and see how she goes. Poor kid, soy yoghurt is her fave food! So much so that she chants for it all through the supermarket until we reach the chiller! I hope she can do a Hannah and get back into it again later.
...if it is the yoghurt, at least I'll have a pretty easy way of treating constipation next time she gets that! Ha ha. I hope it's that and not soy in general... will have to wait and see.

Yep Isla was the same as Hannah and Spencer too. Fine o soy milk but not the yogurt.
I was gonna say stop the yogurt and leave the milk and see how u go.
The yogurt is also full of sugar, and since we cut sugar out of Islas diet(as well as the dairy and oher stuff) her eczema is gone!

I know I'm not cuppatea, but you can get the soy cream cheese from New World and organic shops. It is called Kingland Soy, which is from Aussie. They also make the soy yoghurt you see in supermarkets as well.
But there soy cheddar cheese is foul I much prefer the Cheezly soy cheese, which most organic supermarkets stock.

The soy cream cheese I get is from countdown, woolworth have it too, and is normally next to the soy yoghurts or where the philadelphia etc is, is the kingland one that lady-aset said about.
Haven't seen any chedder cheese, I did give him tofu though which he flicked around his tray and then threw on the floor
We haven't given him the milk yet as he is still on neocate, he's had no yoghurt or cheese today so will see what his bum is like tomorrow, I will be kind of gutted if it the soy as he loves the yoghurts.

You have to watch the soy cheese (the hard one not the cream cheese one) as most of them contain casein which is cows milk protein. Daft I know considering most people who eat soy either can't eat dairy or choose not to for ethical reasons...

The Kingland and Cheezly soy cheeses are completely dairy free, so good for people with dairy allergies, or who are vegans.
I haven't come across a soy cheese in NZ that has caesin in it, but I know a lot of the soy cheese in the states has it. Also a lot of the soy milks as well.

Well Spencer didn't poo at all today (I doubt you actually wanted to know that), hope he doesn't explode in the middle of the night
Lady_aset what is the make of the chedder style cheese? and is in with the fancy cheese or just round where the tasty cheese etc is. I looked in my countdown today but couldn't see anything.

cuppatea - Kingland soya cheese maybe grouped with the rest of the vege stuff in the chiller, it really depends on the supermarket.
Personally myself, I would not recommend the Kingland brand of soy cheese, as the taste is ghastly Cheezly cheddar-style soy cheese is the best IMHO, but can only be purchased through an organic supermarket or if you contact Angel Foods (who are the NZ distributors), they can tell you where you can buy it. Their website is www.angelfoods.co.nz
It is a little pricey, at about $11 a block, but is so worth it.
