This LINK was emailed to me by a friend of mine.
The fact that is is written by a NZ mother with a happy, healthy family life, who was responsible about telling her children about bad touching, who made sure her children felt comfortable talking to her about it and actually took the time to ask them questions about it to make sure they were ok, really brings home to me the fact that you can never be too careful, or too protective when it comes to your children's safety and wellbeing.
I know that we can't and shouldn't feel suspicious of everyone but it really makes you realise just how clever these sickos are. How it can be happening right under your nose and still you have no idea, like this poor mother.
The fact that this guy had been convicted and imprisoned in the past and was still able to live next door to, and be so involved in the lives of this family is so disturbing. I know that they have to live somewhere after they do their time and that it is unreasonable to expect them to find a place with no small children in the vicinity.. Its just so frightening to think this could be any one of us, any one of our neighbours. And we are essentially helpless to find out.

That is so terribly sad... and it's not like she had totally left the kids alone with him for the night or anything, she always seemed to be within a reasonable distance. It is pretty disgusting that these kinds of people can be allowed to live amongst the general population cause I'm pretty sure you can't "cure" a paedophile and make them safe in the community.

Makes me worry about when Alyssa is older and wants to stay the night at a school friends place.. you just never know what that situation is like in their home. Sure, you may meet the parents once and think "they seem nice" but who knows?

Coming from a family that has had this happen from an another family member it is really sad. It is known these days that it will be done by someone that is really close to the family and they are sneaky and manipulative. I so believe that there should be a list of known paedophiles so we can protect our children.

I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived!

My god. Disgusting,i so agree Becks, we should be able to access a list of known paedophiles , its very unfair that they weren't informed the man next door was a known sex offender

i got this from that site... so there are a few places we as parents can access to find more out about potential risks to our kids...

Sensible Sentencing Paedophile and Sex Offender Database ( http://www.safe-nz.org.nz/ ) ,
There is a pathetically small number of people listed there given that 1:5 girls and 1:7 boys under the age of 16 are abused in NZ.
Deborah Coddington’s New Zealand Paedophile and Sex Offender Index (a book that is available to buy or borrow from the library…..

I hate that there are people like that out there, you really can't trust anyone.

I am all for "second chances" amd such ,but pedophilia has such a high rate or re-offending, it seems ridiculous.
