Topic: Preeclampsia worry Posted: 19 September 2007 at 1:32pm |
Hey all, I was wondering if someone could tell me about Preeclampsia. I have looked over a few sites but all seem to be a lil confusing. A friend heard about the symptoms I was experiencing and thinks I should let my midwife know, which I will on Monday as that when her visit is.
Just wondering who has been through it, what generally happens etc etc.
Thanks. I am really just a big worry wort.

If you have pre-eclampsia, you need to contact your mw right away - not next week.
I think you might be a bit early for pre-eclampsia, but it might just be that the majority of cases are 30-something weeks pg.
I found these details online for you:
The main symptoms are; increased blood pressure and protein levels in the urine (proteinuria). Other symptoms that seem to occur with preeclampsia include persistent headaches, blurred vision or sensitivity to light, and abdominal pain.
Those most at risk include:
- Women with chronic hypertension (high blood pressure before becoming pregnant).
- Women who developed high blood pressure or preeclampsia during a previous pregnancy, especially if these conditions occurred early in the pregnancy.
- Women who are obese prior to pregnancy.
- Pregnant women under the age of 20 or over the age of 40.
- Women who are pregnant with more than one baby.
- Women with diabetes, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or scleroderma.
I know Mummy_Becks had pre-eclampsia.

Thanks so much. I am probally jumping the gun a bit. At my last midwife appointment at the beginning of the month I had traces of protein in my wee, high blood pressure (was the midwifes main concern) and more recently I have had 12-14 hour sleeps and chronic headaches (nurofen will generally deal with this but they are daily). I try to get out of the house alot, as sometimes being cooped up can result in nasty headaches but I just feel weak. I guess all I can do is speak to my midwife and see what she has to say based on my new tests. Cheers.

It's probably worth calling her today and getting your urine and BP checked for peace of mind - won't take her long and you can even get her back-up to do it.

Yeah I wouldn't leave it, like Teresa said, it won't take her long to do a quick check!

As they have said I was lucky enough to get it in both pregnancies. Biggest giveaways of it are swelling in legs and progresses up your legs (by the time I got to deliver my boys the swelling was up to my thighs), you hands and if your face is swollen in anyway see your MW asap. You will have protein in your pee, picked up with a pee stick test. BP is high its more the bottom (distloic(sp?) number that you have to be worried about, my highest was 168/106. Blurred vision along with headaches. Other things are in your bloods mainly your uric acid. But if you have any concerns see you MW they will out your mind at ease (hopefully) and if you have any other questions you can PM me, i've been through it twice now.

I would ask about your iron levels too, I had very severe headaches, wanting to sleep all the time and general fatigued feeling and it turned out my iron was through the floor even though I was taking heavy duty supplements.
Hope all is ok chicky, and agree with the others about checking it out sooner rather than later.
Let us know how you go xx
