I hope I've put this in the right place, thought I'd share my birth story.
Cooper Wade Bannister
Born 5th September @ 12.13pm
Weight: 7pds 2oz - 3250gms
Head: 34cm
Length: 52
Tuesday 4th September:
I had been feeling absolutely fine all day, did the usual at home, then picked up the girl from Preschool. Went to the mall to get some wrapping paper for her presents, while there I had a really painful kick that made me double over in pain. Didn't really think much of it. Had another one later on in the afternoon, again shrugged it off. I'd also been told that a friend of ours had gone into labout, 4 days early. Remembered thinking wish it was me. Craig got home from work and I mentioned that I had mw the next day and that I hoped she wouldn't do another stretch and sweep as I didn't want to be delivering on Nyah's birthday (7th Sept).
Tuesday night we were watching TV, and I was tired so went to bed and finished watching NCIS and Outrageous Fortune, while in bed I couldnt' get comfortable had some dull pains in my lower tummy, just figured it was my dumb hips. Turned the light off at 10.30 and at 12.06 I work up and those niggles were happening more frequently, so I got my phone and started timing them (hid the phone under the blankets so I didn't wake up Craig). They were becoming more regular and a little annoying so I got up at 1.30am and sat on the couch and timed them and wrote them down. Craig got up and I said that this could be it. At 2am we called my parents and asked them to come sit with the kids, then called the mw and she told us to come straight in. So we got everything together, and waited for mum to arrive, gave her instructions for the next day and left. We even snuck through a couple of red lights!!
Wednesday 5th September
Arrived at Auckland at 2.45am and went straight up to the delivery unit, while Craig parked the car my mw did an internal and found that I was 4cm dilated, we decided to break my waters to get things moving. The contractions were still around 5mins apart, so I went walking and we sat around and waited. We all figured because I'd had quick easy labours with the other two that we'd be all done by 6am. Not so.
At 5.50am she did another internal and I'd only gone to 5cm. So much for a 6am delivery!
I have to say at this stage I was getting really p*ssed off with my mw and Craig as they weren't being very supportive, were telling me to hurry up etc, so I got cross at one stage and walked out of the room.
Came back and laid down and dozed for awhile. At 7.45am my contractions stopped. Nothing was happening, mw checked baby, my bp etc and you could see in her face that she was slightly miffed that things had stopped. Hello so was I!
So we had the dicussion about what to do next. She put in a drip of isotonic stuff as I was really thirsty and dehydrated. Did another sweep and advised that I should be seem by the team. So another internal done by the registrar with four other people looking on! The decision was made that I should be induced using the Synto I said ok but I want an epi thanks, the last time I had Synto was with Conor and it was a horrific experience.
The epi guys came in and put it in, which was a new experience for me, nothing like what I imagined it would be. The synto was started and off we went - again. I think it was around 10am by this stage. Had some breakfast and waited. The contractions started again and away we go.
I had to have 20min BP checks because of the epi, and I was put on the CTG monitor, which now meant that I couldn't move anywhere. I jokingly said at one stage that I bet that this baby would be born by midday.
The contractions got worse and she did another check around found that my cervix had a lip on it and I needed to push that out of the way... so started pushing at around 11.30am, once that had been moved, things started to heat up. Craig and I were watching the contractions come and go on the monitor and they increased in intensity by around midday. At one stage I was hyperventilating much to my disgust as I thought I was pushing this baby out! The contractions were really uncomfortable and I could feel every single one of them... So she emptied my bladder for me and topped up the epi.
Midday and it was all on, this baby was ready to be born, I pushed for 13mins and out he came, screaming his lungs out, he was put on my chest straight away, and I immediately said, OMG he's got black hair! (I always imagined a bald or blonde baby). He took awhile to settle so we laid there and I just patted his bum and he settled down. During this time I think Craig cut the cord. I had the injection to bring on the placenta which didn't take long at all to come out.
I had to have 2 internal stitches, and he had his Vit K injection. We had some breakfast and then my mw left!!!! Just walked in after she'd examined the both of us and informed us that she was going home, and that I was now under the care of the hospital, and oh by the way you can't leave here for four hours because of the epi and she said you should probably feed him now, didn't even bother to watch to make sure I was doing it right, and I'm not even sure he got anything from me.. I was again so p*ssed off, Craig wasn't happy either. She left me with the drips in my arm, which meant I couldn't go to the toilet! We were just left alone for ages.
At 3.45pm a mw came in and said that I could get up and have a shower, which was a very funny experience, as I had absolutely no feeling or control of my right leg, so it made for a very funny 10mins to get me off the bed into the shower.
We got organised and left Auckland by around 4.15pm, and checked into Birthcare, wow what an amazing stay I had. I had a wonderful mw looking after me during the day, and another one at night, they were so supportive and helpful. I had the room to myself the first night and shared the second night. The food was great, the shower was fantastic!
So there you go - bit long
Oh and our friend that went into labour on the Tuesday; her daughter was born at 11.58am 4th September, 2mins before her daddy's birthday, Cooper now shares a birthday with him. We were actually in the hospital at the same time, and we both transferred to Birthcare, so got to hang out together which was really cool!

i have tried traditional cloths, pea pods and mio bambinos. I think he just has a really heavy out put! He is a poo every nappy change type of baby!
What kind are you using?
Any body got any top tips to share?
It might be a coincidence but since i started pulling the muslin over the top of Thomas's bassinet he falls asleep without so much as a peep! Thanks to plunket for that one!

You could ask on the cloth nappy thread. I've got a whole range of differant ones but find that Arabella is to small for them and she poos every nappy change too, it's like her thighs aren't big enough yet but then again she is a very long baby rather then fat.

Has anyone else tried expressing? Do you know how many mls you need to make up a full feed? Thomas is 8 weeks old and we have a wedding coming up, my dress is not breast feeding friendly so am hoping he will take it from a bottle. Trying to get him used to it in advance......
|
Posted By: BabyOnBoard

Isn't it like 150mls. Would take you awhile to get that especially if you haven't expressed before. I find that the breast I had to express off when I had an infection gives up more then the one that I have only just started expressing and storing off

hey there girls - Sorry I have been so slack and not posting for ages so I will give you a quick update on where Sam and I are at !
He is 3 mths old now and is progressing along great, unfortunately I had to give up breast feeding at 6 weeks as I had nothing to give him - after his 6 week imms he feed off me on the Sat and come Tues when we ended back at the Docs I still hadn't fed him and I had nothing in there ! No leaking, no fullness or heaviness, no pain no nothing ! It was almost as if I'd never been pregnant ! But he is doing great on the bottle and I have made peace with the decision now, although it was hard at the time.
Sam has started to roll onto his side now and does wee 360 degree turns on the floor - so cute! He smiles heaps and talks and chats away to his toys all the time - i could spend all day just watching and listening to him !
We have cloth nappies (Mummys Touch AIO) but they are still quite bulky on him so we use them when we are at home and he can just have a t-shirt and nappy on, otherwise his legs are sticking up in the air !
We christened Sam on Saturday and had a great day with our immediate family and close friends.
We are out most days either with the plunket girls or ante natal girls or other friends, doing coffee or lunch or going for walks or just hanging at their house or mine. Such a busy social life being a mama !
Xmas is almost upon us and since I'm at home, my shopping is 99% done and wrapped and under the tree, my Xmas cards are posted and I only have some Xmas Cookies to make and no doubt I'll keep finding wee things for Sam ! We got this really cool toy box and have painted it and Sams Grandparents on Hubby's side are paying for it for his Xmas pressie - but I think his Aunts and Uncles might have the thing full before we even get it home !!!
Anyway - thats more or less us at the moment - would love to hear from you all soon and hope all is going well !!!

Arabella is 10weeks old and is all smiles and chatter, she half rolls n wishes she could sit up and see the world hehe. She is waking once during the night and feeds 3 - 4 hourly during the day. She weighs 10 pound 11 oz (5.35 kgs) and is as long as her 8month old cousin hehe.

Hey, Sam is adorable!!
Well, I've had an interesting week! To cut a long story short, Ava has been diagnosed with Reflux!! Got medicine for her and hopefully that will help her!
Hows everyone getting on!?
Also how do you attach pics??
|

Hey there BabyKiwi , you can attach pics by using Photobucket - have you heard of that ???
basically you load your pics onto Photobucket.com and then from there you edit the photo and resize to message board I think and then you copy the IMG code into the message area here....... does that make sense ?
Ooohhh reflux thats no good, is she boob fed ? hence the meds ????

Hey thanks for that!! Will give that a go!!
She was boob fed but we switched her to formula when she was 9 weeks old, she settled better after that, but this week she started getting really cranky, not feeding properly and was starting to wake up at night. Took her to the docs and she diagnosed reflux so now have medicine for her and we started her last night and she is heaps better already!! Thankfully!!
How is it going with you!?
|
Posted By: Alisa
Date Posted: 14 December 2007 at 8:55am
Hi again Babykiwi - do you use the reflux formula ?? Apparently you can get a formula that is "thicker" that is supposed to help with reflux. I don't know a lot about it just what some of my ante natal girls have told me..... and they also were putting gaviscon into the formula ????
We are doing great, I can't believe how big our bubbas have got and the things that they do now !! isn't it just amazing !! Can you imagine what next year's xmas is going to be like !!!! Sam is a bit of a lightweight but then so is his dad, tall and lean, man men have all the luck aye !! haa haaa But otherwise Sam is all good. he has just started to roll onto his side and do wee 180degree turns on the play mat - so funny to watch ! And man does he have big conversations with his toys !!! Aside from the reflux, how is Ava doing ?? Love that name by the way !

Hey Mel.. Yeah Sam was 5.7kg at last plunket so hopefully he has crept over the 6kg mark ??? Sam is bottle fed and has 4x 180ml during the day and a 120ml at 10.30pm for his dream feed so he is getting enough (i think) and surely he would let me know if wanted more ! I have also started to offer him water in between feeds..... Sam is in bed by 6.30 and has a dream feed at 10.30 and he woke at 7.30 this morning - aaahhhh bliss ! and he went back to bed after his bottle and is still there !!!!
Xmas - it will be pretty full on as its DH's family only grandchild/nephew so am guessing Sam is going to be spoilt big time. we'll just be hanging with the family. Mum is coming up from Oamaru to have Chrissy with us here this year instead of us going home.

Hi,
Ava is doing well apart from the Reflux, she still tries to laugh and talk! Such a wee trooper!! Yeah, she has been on the thicker formula for a couple of weeks and she has been really good on it. When I phoned the plunket line and the doc who diagnosed her said that because of the growth spurt at 3 months, she has more acid to deal with causing the reflux to flare up!! The doc said she wasn't going to give her the gavison as it's past that point, we need to control the acid and let nature do the rest! Apparently they grow out of the reflux and that most babies when fed solids feel better!
I know what you mean about the size, I look back at the pictures from the birth and she looked tiny! Even all the newborn clothes, my wee Ava was 6.2kg at her 3 month check!
I love listening to her babble at everything, she has now learned that she has a voice and has such a high pitched laugh. Xmas will be great, just a quiet one for us.
Sleeping wise Ava is great! Up till the start of the week, Ava sleeps from 7pm (ish) till 6.30am, takes after her dad that way! Thankfully dad does the morning feed. Thats how we knew there was something was wrong when she started waking through the night. She has been doing that ince about 8 weeks old, I'm so lucky that way!!

Thats great! Thomas started sleeping 10 hours out of the blue and its continued on for 2 or 3 weeks now so she should continue on
So glad to hear of another baby who likes to stay up late!

I hope it continues that long!
Feel guilty when people say "oh do you wake up at her feed time and worry about why shes not awake"
Ummmmm no I sleep right through until she starts to stir

Absolutely! Why wake a sleeping baby during the night! We want to encourage long night sleeps!
Thomas slept for 12 hours last night that was a record! It was such a long time and I was very thankful when he woke up this morning as im breastfeeding it was a long time between feeds!
I hope she is still giving you lots of nice long night sleeps :)

Yes if he has had a settled day he has been doing 12 hours at night but if we have been out alot its back to 10, but I can hardly complain about that! Seems true that sleep promotes sleep for Thomas anyway! He started laughing on Thursday it gave me a little bit of a fright when he chuckled at me! He has a real hearty man chuckle!
You must be a great mum if your baby is so contented, she must be getting everything she needs. I have a friend whose baby has reflux i really feel for her it must be so hard but still she soldiers on
Is anyone using a jolly jumper or bumbo with their babes? I think Thomas is starting to get bored with his usual things will have to start getting more creative i think!

I've got Arabella a jolly jumper and bumbo for xmas! She loves to jump and has really strong leg muscles and she loves sitting up. . Can't wait for her to start using them.
I wouldn't say I was a great mum, but I try my hardest - we still have our ups and downs but I like to think I'm doing a good job.
Arabella laughed for the first time last friday! it wasn't her usual ha ha ha but a full on litle giggle.
That is awesome he sleeps so long! It's the same for Arabella too, if we go out shes usually up at night longer. .

cool, you will have to let me know what she thinks of them!
Thomas had a sit in a bumbo at a friends house yesterday and loved it so i think that will be our next purchase, he likes to sit up and stand up alot (all the things they taught us at teachers college not to do with babies!) he smiles alot and will grizzle if we cradle him so oh well he must be happy enough doing it, he has solid wee thighs so i guess they help! We have just moved him into a proper carseat from his capsule and he is not at all impressed! Its funny watching their little personalities coming out!

Hello everyone
How was your Christmas and new year?

Hi Simone
We had a very quiet Christmas and New Years. DH went back to work on Monday, so I'm at home with all 3 kids! Interesting times.
Cooper has had a couple of spoons of apple and he was almost like oh yeah ok whatever.. not really pushing the solids, I think I'll wait until the older kids are back at school.

fair enough! Be much easier without the other two im sure. You must have your hands full with 3! I feel busy enough with just the one!
I was hoping to wait a little longer but while we were away at the bach he started grizzling after feeds especially at dinner time! Tried to eat an olive off his uncles plate so thought it must have been time to try him on something. He ate 2 tsp of mashed banana straight away smacking his lips and has been away ever since!
Cooper must be similar age to Thomas when was he born?
Thomas was 7/9
From what age did you use a high chair? We are just feeding him on our laps at the moment but that avocado went everywhere yesterday!

It can be a challenge some days, my son Conor is 12, so he's pretty self sufficient. Cooper was born on the 5th Sept and my daughter Nyah was born on the 7th Sept '02.
With Nyah I put her in a highchair at 5mths. She had really good head control and was quite a strong girl; she walked at 9mths too!!
Have you got a bouncer that is upright-ish? I used to feed Conor in that before I got a highchair or you could put your stroller into the upright position see how Thomas goes in that.

Hey there girls. We had a great Xmas and New Years\, we stayed at home as DH only had Xmas and New Years Days off. Sam was spoilt rotten but we kinda of expected that as is frist grandchild on DH side !
I have a question - when will I know Sam is ready for solids ??? He was born 01/09.

Well they say you can start from 4mths... but I know alot of people that have held out till baby was 6mths. I think its a personal choice, you could always try what we did and give him a small spoon of something and see if he looks for more, or spits it out, or he might gag, that will give you an idea.

I bought his highchair on sale when I was pregnant, might try him in it for his dinner solids. He has pretty good head control who knows otherwise i will wear a towel hehe
He likes to do all the things your not supposed to do with babies like sitting and standing up! Oh well teachers college doesnt know everything Im sure he wouldnt be laughing if he had a sore back!
Thomas started feeding 2 hourly throughout the day and sleeping 10 hours at night instead of 12. Usually if we put food to his mouth as a joke he would look the other way but when we tried it he opened wide and tried to almost latch on to it. He was really grizzly after his dinner feed and if we were eating dinner he would grizzle whereas previously he had been quite happy playing on the floor nearby. So i mashed up some banana as thats all we had at the bach that was baby friendly and he ate about 2 tsp kept looking for more.
Hopefully that helps, every baby is different though so Sam may do it quite differently! I have heard breast fed babies look for solids earlier as the formula keeps them fuller longer.
Have your babies started squealing at all? Its Thomas new trick and very high pitched! gone are the quiet baby days i think!

Sam is a bottle baby so I;ll wait till I talk to plunket next week and see what she says and perhaps look at starting him around 5 mths. He doens't squeal though !!! he does chatter non stop sometimes, it can be quite distracting and I've asked him if he could stop talking just for 5 mins, yeah right ! haa haaa haaa But he has started to full on laugh and giggle and its adorable ! He has mastered rolling from side to side while on back, rolling off tummy onto back and is now trying desparately to roll from back onto tummy ! Won't be long now and I'll have to watch for where he has wriggled away too.

Xmas and New Years was busy as I am staying with my parents until my mum can care for herslef again
SimoneF - Arabella loves to sit and stand to. Grizzles constantly if you put her flat for to long, she is so strong just needs to gain a bit more balance.
Arabella is no where near ready for solids - I put a spoon up to her mouth to see what she would do and she kept pushing out her tongue, plus shes sleeping great. Going to see how long we can hold out for.
Oh squeling is so cute Arabella squels and grunts and giggles I just love watching and listening to hear

Wow Sam sounds like he is doing really well! I wouldnt worry too much about solids, believe me they let you know when they are ready for them! Thomas is a really big boy and perhaps my milk isnt so great! He is about 7.5kgs!
Its pretty cool listening to them finding their voice, I think Thomas has worked out if he squeals we will go over to him so keeps doing it all the time now! Im glad to hear other babies like sitting/standing! I know what you mean about the balance. He is pretty solid on his legs standing up but wobbles about after awhile, How does Arabella like her jolly jumper and bumbo?
Thats no good about your Mum, hope she gets better soon and that its not too serious! javascript:AddSmileyIcon('')
Chris goes back to work on Monday after 3 weeks off I hope Thomas copes without his daddy around all the time! He is a real daddys boy!

I thought I'd try some farex tonight to see what would happen - and yeah he opened his mouth for it but then pushed it back out with his tongue !! So does that mean he'd like solids just not Farex ?? Hee hee

Alisa - Did he pull a face or look interested?
Simone - She loves them! Sits in her bumbo like a queen on her throne. . Loves the jolly jumper and bounces and walks round in it. One spot I put her is on a high beam and I have to put the excercise tramp under her so her feet touch somewhere and she loves that. Not sure if it is bad for her??

Sounds to me like Sam still has the extrusion reflex so no need to worry about solids yet! If he was ready he would swallow it, pretty clever the human body isn't it. I have heard that alot of babies dont like farex I havent tried that one yet. So maybe next time you try you could use something sweeter like kumara or banana see if that works? Its such a guessing game, plunket recommends you to start on farex, have you tried it? I used to nanny a kid that loved it, not sure why!
Babyonboard, when we were at teachers college they told us to put an exercise tramp under the jolly jumper to take the impact off their backs/joints etc so sounds like according to them you are doing the right thing! sounds like it would be heaps of fun too extra bounce!
Thats such a cute photo! How do u put photos up?
Are you guys still wrapping your babies? Trying to wean Thomas off it, any tips? at the moment still wrapping loosely and he sucks the muslin to sleep, usually he gets out of it so should i stop wrapping altogether now?
Also have you guys moved your babies from the bassinet to the cot yet? how did it go?

Hey there. Yeah will have a chat to plunket next week to see what they say re: solids. I think that something sweeter might be the go. Like fruit or pumpkin. I have to say that Farex looks pretty gross !
I stopped wrapping Sam about a week ago now as he is thumb sucker and would always get his hands out so I decided one night to wrap him from the chest down and left his hands out and it was fine so the next night I didn't wrap him at all !! I had stopped wrapping him for day naps quite a while ago.
I'd just start to reduce the number of times you wrap Thomas and if its a comfort thing, perhaps give him a muslin facecloth to suck on ??
Sam has been in the cot since he was 7 weeks. He had grown too long for the basinette we had borrowed so one day I just popped him into the cot and he has been good as gold. I sleep him in a sleep wedge so because I could move this to the cot I don't think Sam even realised he was somewhere different ! it was just hard for me not to have him in our room !
I use Photobucket to load photos onto the site, I edit the image to make it smaller then copy the IMG code into the message area here. Does that make sense ??
Phew...... what a long post !

Hey all,
We had a very quiet time over xmas and new year, with the only noise coming from Ava, like all your bubs, Ava loves to squeal, a week ago it was at 3am!! We just leave her and she goes back to sleep!
She was diagnosed with having reflux just before xmas so we had a time of it before the holiday period! So we haven't been giving her much tummy time but any time we do her legs go crazy, she balances herself on her tummy and kicks like mad, it's funny to watch!!
Ava is now sleeping a sleeping bag in her cot and loves it, well we think she does, she sleeps so well! We just went cold turkey with her and we haven't looked back, like Sam she has found her thumb and is content! As for solids we haven't started her yet but she has taken a very keen interest to what I'm eating. We have offered her a spoon but she isn't interested in it at the mo but it shouldn't be too long now! We sit Ava in her highchair at lunchtime so that she gets used to sitting in it, hopefully to make it easier for us when it comes to solids!
She loves her bath and goes crazy kicking her legs and splashing, she manages to splash her face and isn't phased by it at all! Anyone elses bubs enjoy the bath!?
I just can't believe how much she has grown and how much she has learned in such a short space of time!!

Sam loves his bath and does the same, kicks like mad !! He also loves having a shower with Dad. I undress him and then take him into the bathroom when DH is already in the shower and Sam gets all excited and wriggles and kicks until I hand him over to DH and then he's all smiles. Doens't get worried at all if water is all over his face !!!

Thomas is a thumb sucker too, i wrap him loosely and wriggles out of it completely so I guess he doesnt really need it anymore. Will move him into cot then will take the wrap away one step at a time i think!
Thomas also loves the bath or shower, thats where he giggles the most! He is not at all interested in any of his bath toys just likes to splash and kick. He doesnt mind the water on his face either
Thanks for answering all my questions, will try this photo bucket later!

Oh I forgot to add that Cooper has been in a cot from day 1 and he sleeps in a PekeMoe which is basically a lightweight sleeping bag. So he's not wrapped either now. On really hot nights he sleeps in a singlet and nappy.
Just curious; where are we all in NZ? Call it a mini poll
