Congratulations!!! Another october girl
We are doing alright so far. DH went back to work today so am feeling a little lost. But I'm out of bed and doing a few light tasks so it can't be all that bad. Joy is behaving herself so far too which helps a lot. Yesterday she started a feeding schedule of every two hours which was quite tough on me sleepwise. Must have been a mini growth spurt or something. I have upped her intake of EBM to around 110-125ml every 3-4 hours and she seems to have settled into our routine again.

Congrats all the October mums!!
Rex is doing really well. We seem to have a 'sort of' routine in place, he wakes, I feed him, change him, feed him and put him back to bed....ahhhh its a baby's life!!!
I'm getting up between 2-3 times during the night to feed...which isn't too bad.
My biggest hurdle was to get Rex to sleep in his cot. He loves his hammock but hated his cot. I now put a warm wheat pack against him when he sleeps in his cot and he seems to love it

What drama's we've had!
Yesterday my midwife weighed Joy and thought that she was yet again below her birth weight ..so off we went to get a urine test in case there was an infection (poor Bubba) and then off to the paediatrician today only to have her weighed again to find that she is at 3.44kgs! She gained!!! We thought it strange her losing weight when she seemed chubbier than last week. What a relief!

She has a portable weighing contraption/harness thingy. I will definitely be getting her to weigh a second time next time. Poor Joy, those urine tests are not nice. Such a lot of stress for nothing but I'm glad Joy is ok.
I'm surprised to see you say you are still learning Ellen. I would have thought a mum of three would have it all sorted. Every baby is different though aren't they. You would have to adjust to each child differently too.
Being a mum is such a harder job than I thought it would be. It always looked so easy!! I'm sure we are all doing a great job and such beautiful bubba's as a reward!

I can so relate to that! I thought the biggest problems where sleep deprivation and maybe a few latching problems! But I end up with mastitis and raw nipples. Wish someone had told me about cluster feeding - Arabella didn't sleep for the first 2 days and nights she just feed non stop!
It's amazing how fast they grow! Midwife weighed her at 7lb 15 yesterday and her birth weight was 7lb 5oz. . . I can really tell the differance.
Glad everything worked out ok with Joy Sunnyhoney!!

I'm so proud of myself, I have survived a weekend on my own My DH has been away for two nights and is due back soon!!! I managed to cope well on my own Mind you, I did have my mum around for most of yesterday and then my brother and SIL around for dinner last night, so I wasn't completely on my own.
I need a jolly good sleep though, but I think thats just the joys of having a baby
Good to hear your baby has put on heaps of weight BabyOnBoard. I'm not sure what Rex weights now, haven't seen midwife since Wednesday.
Its certainly a painful experience having raw nipples. I've got one nipple that was inverted and its very raw....does anyone have any handy hints of how ease the pain?

Icepacks/cold cabbage leaves (but no more than 20mins on as can slow milk supply) and Purelan for the nipples. Mine are quite dry and I find it is very soothing.
Joy was 3190gms when she was born. She lost a whole pound in hospital but is now back up to 3440gms

Poor Rex has a cold at the moment though, we had a pretty unsettled night last night.
Hope everyone else is doing well. I see from the Pregnancy forum that we've got a few more new mums who will be joining us soon

I guess I should be joining this group now!! That feels a bit strange!
We are finally home from Birthcare after 4 nights - they really were fantastic, and it was awesome to have DH staying with me the whole time. Somehow we ended up with a double room, so it was a bit like a hotel but with a lot of support!
We have had problems establishing feeding, Oliver wont latch onto my Right side really, and gets quite distressed trying, so we are really only feeding from the left at the moment. We are expressing from both sides and using the little bit of EBM to top him up and if he is still hungry we are topping up with formula. I dont think my milk has really come in properly yet, so hopefully its going to get a lot easier! At the moment its taking 10mins to expresss 10mls and can feel pretty de-moralising! Please tell me it gets easier!
We have only been home for a few hours and he has slept the whole time- thank goodness, as I feel quite overwhelmed by the thought that we are now "on our own" and am really quite nervous! Still DH is being FANTASTIC - I dont know what I would do without him.

Congratulations Sim Sam!
It's nice to be home isn't it. I don't know if it gets easier but I think you get better at dealing with things. We had problems feeding too and I am also expressing. Hang in there!
I can't believe Joy is 4 weeks old this Thursday!! Where has the time gone. I feel like I will blink and she will be 20 already. She has caught DH's cold - poor bubba. One very snotty nose makes for a grump baby. Just as well I read some tips on here yesterday, this is such a great site.

Kabe, Eva is so cute
Doesn't it make the world of difference having a supportive husband? Mine has been fantastic, I really don't know how people cope on their own.
Sunnyhoney, Rex also caught a cold (from me!!!!). Poor little man. He has been sick for about a week. He is a lot better now though, but it was really hard trying to deal with him and a cold. It really has screwed up his sleeping pattern. Only seems to be sleeping for 2 hours at a time lately, very very tiring Fingers crossed he starts sleeping for longer periods.
Hope everyone is recovering well

NikkiB - Hope ev everything works out with Rex.
Think Arabella might be getting a cold, her breathing is a wee bit rattley (sp?) at night. Midwife said keep an eye on it.
She is 8lb 11oz now! People say shes so little but for me compared to her 7lb 5oz birth weight shes huge!!

Thanks everyone. We think she's pretty cute
Sunnyhoney, I'm really struggling with the breast feeding. I'm just finding it so very painful and dread each feed. My nipples are so sore I'm guessing it's because they're getting use to feeding, but also because I incorrectly detached Eva a few times and they're still recovering.
For those of you breast feeding the pain eventually ease up??
DH has been wonderful. We had a shocker of a night last night, with Eva awake and tearful from 11pm - 2.30am. He helped out as much as he could, despite having to go back to work today. I think it was because my milk had just come through and she had over eaten, but still though she was hungry (what mw told me!). My first day home alone has gone pretty well.
How are you getting on Simsam?

Why is feeding so painful when its so natural? Humm...I guess the same could be said about labour????
I'm very lucky, I've only got one sore nipple, but I find the pain is a lot better if Rex latches on properly. Just remember, you are both learning, I'm sure it can only get better!
Well, I survived my first coffee group this morning! It was so nice to get out of the house and have a hot chocolate for once!!! Rex was a little angel And it looks like I've found myself a walking buddy

My cousin made a very valid point - how can breast feeding be easy and natural when you don't have someone sucking of there every other day. I think it's definatley a learned thing in our society today.
Kabe - The pain does go away and everything heals well but the minute bubba isn't on properly you know. Sadly Arabella doesn't like to latch well she just wants milk asap, but then I'm still practising and learning. .

Well I guess I join here now!
We came home from the hospital yesterday and our first night went really well (a nice change from the last two sleepless nights).
Talamahina (we just call him Tala) is super cute (I know I'm biased) and at the moment he seems to be following quite a predictable pattern - not time-wise, but ordered - feed, change, feed, sleep. I'm not holding my breath though, I know it'll change all the time.
Breastfeeding is going well - I just keep an eye on the latch and correct it if it hurts. I'm using Lansinoh and finding that as long as they're kept soft, all is well.
I hope everyone else is doing well - it's really handy to hear what you're going through just before I have to go through it myself.

We are still struggling with the breastfeeding (I think half of it is emotional with me!!), I seem to have put a huge amount of pressure on myself to "get it right", and end up in a right state when I dont. Have been having lots of tearful moments where I feel like a huge failure, because the birth didnt go to plan and now I cant feed properly. I know its stupid, but its just how I feel at the moment!
We are feeding primarily from the right breast, he doesnt seem to want to latch on to the left at all and gets grizzley really quickly. He feeds to 35mins on the right (mw said not to leave him on for longer than that) and then we are topping him up with formula as well. He is a great sleeper though - once his tummy is full! This morning he slept from 3.30 - 8.30, so we are starting to feel almost human.
We are going to see the lactation consultant tomorrow, so hopefully she can help. I really dont want to continue with the formula, but at the end of the day so long as Ollie is happy and healthy I will do whatever I need to do.
We are going on our first outing today to have lunch with my grandparents, truth is I am terrified, but I survived the afternoon at home yesterday with DH at work, so am sure we can do this!
Kabe - Eva is beautiful, so gorgeous! Well Done! Wonder how Peachy is getting on?

My nipples are feeling quite alot better today (what a weird thing to be talking about, but this whole experience has been unusual, lol)! Managed my first day at home alone yesterday and have just done my first outing alone with Eva to coffee group. It's funny how little things like that are such an achievement these days!
MW visit this morning was really good. Eva has put on a good amount of weight already, so I was worrying needlessly that she wasn't getting enough to eat. Infact, some of the problems I've had with her sleeping at night are likely to be due to her over eating. Have got some new strategies and feeding positions to try.
SimSam, I've had some moments of being really overwhelmed with BFing and being over tired and sore. I think we just need to cut our selves some slack and remind ourselves that this is all new and we're doing a great job.
Anyway, I'm off to bed as I've been up since 4.45am

Kabe, if you don't mind me asking - what strategies did you get given because I think Arabellas problems could be because she over feeds. .

BabyOnBoard, my Mw suggested doing shorter bursts of feeding with severl breaks, to allow baby to register she's full.
So for example, putting her to the breast for 4-5 minutes only, taking her off for two minutes (and changing her position to wind her - over shoulder, sitting on lap etc). Then putting her back on the same breast. She suggested doing this for 3 or 4 times in one feeding session. This way babies tummy has time to register with her brain that she is full and she won't over eat.
SimSam, I'm keen to go to the Parent and Child Show on Friday. Just not sure if I'm brave enough to take baby!

How did you find the show Kabe?
I was quite overwhelmed by all the stands. But I entered a bunch of competitions and got a lot of freebies and samples . It was a tiring afternoon though.

How many times are you guys getting up during the night to feed?
I'm finding that if I don't have a nap during the afternoon, Rex wants 3 feeds. If I do have a nap, he only wants 2 feeds...

Our night feeds are looking something like this at the moment - between 10-11, then again sometime between 2-3, then he wakes between 6-7 and normally goes back down pretty easily (this morning we went back to bed after he went down at 9am and we all slept until 11.30!!)
He is taking a long time to settle down and go to sleep after a feed, so thats a bit of a challenge...but getting the hang of it!

We have just had a few nights of 1 and 1/2 - 2 hours between feeds and no sleep throughout the day (except short cat naps on me) but last night (and usually) its 9:30 then 1:30 then 4:30 then 7;30 - 8:30 depeding on the size of the 4:30 feed

Gosh, that sounds good Simsam! Wouldn't it be nice if Oliver let you sleep in to 11.30 every morning!
Our feeds are looking like this, between 10-11.30pm, 2-3am, 5-7.30am but then Rex won't go back down to sleep. He is generally up until 9.30-11 before he has another sleep (unless I give him a bath with me, and then he goes back down to bed after another feed). I'm thinking I might have to give him a bath every morning - but by that stage, I'm wide awake and very unlikely to go back to bed myself.
I'm wondering when the 2-3am feed is no longer required? I find this the hardest feed.

HI guys Sounds like you are all doing well Jessica is sleeping 8pm-9pm till 1am and then up again at 4am-5am wide awake which has been making the day very long when the other 2 are normally awake around 6am. I swear you never get used to sleep depvation(sp?) even after 3. im thinking im going to start waking jessica for a dream feed at 10pm-11pm and see how long she can go for after that. She is becoming so much more alert and loves siting in her bouncer watching her brother and sister. How do your little ones like the bath? jessica loves it and alaways falls asleep in it if only i could give her a bath every time she needs asleep. We have had a couple of smiles which has made it so much better when your having a bad day

Eva's night feeds are similiar to Rex's:
between 10-11.30pm, 2-3am, 5-7.30am
I've found that Eva is difficult to settle after the 2-3am feed and last night didn't settle until 4.30am. Had a very tired, cross mummy! I find it difficult to know what to do when she's unsettled after a feed, as she still looks hungry, but can't be. MW said a hungry baby and an overfull baby look the same, which I thought was interesting.
Went to the parent and child show yesterday. Had my mum take bubs for a walk around the park, while I went in. Found it quite interesting, but abit overwhelming with all the people and prams. Didn't end up buying anything but got lots of free samples.

sunnyhoney are you expressing breast milk and then feeding via bottle for all your feeds?
Why I ask is I am having huge breastfeeding issues and am expressing every feed, which is hard work but I am determined not to go to formula. I am seeing a lactation consultant on Monday to help me. I feel so guilty not being able to breastfeed, but feel I am doing my best by expressing and I have a great supply too!
Am I the only one having b/feeding issues or are there others in the same boat?

Hi Peachy, welcome to the 'other side' . Its totally normal to have breastfeeding issues with your first bubs I think...it took me almost 8 weeks to finally feel 'on top' of it all , but you get there, and when you do, its so worth the perseverence, so hang in there!

Wow I finally make it to this thread. And it's sooooo nice to hear that so many of you are in the same boat as me.
I've had a bit of a horrible 24 hours - Blair had problems settling after his 2:30am feed this morning and in the end DH (who was still up playing on the puter) took him for a drive and sent me back to bed - at 5:30. Needless to say the little man was asleep by the time they got to the end of the driveway. Thank goodness he slept for nearly 4 1/2 hours afterwards. This combined with an unsettled period yesterday and another later ths morning bought the tears on (mine)as I just couldn't settle him and was feeling pretty inadequate. I know that this tough time will pass, and I just need to hang in there, but at the time it wasn't great. Thank goodness DH still has a couple of more days at home. I know I can do this. I survived 4 nights in hospital along with the days - and DH wasn't there 24/7 - and we only called upon the nurses a couple of times at night.

Oh man, I'm feeling so lucky right now - my boy is doing really well feeding and sleeping wise *touches wood* - but I know it can't last forever and I'm gonna get a shock when it changes!
DH goes back to work on Monday and I'm feeling nervous about that already - a second pair of hands is a godsend. We made all our trips and visits this week while the weather was great and we were both around. I admire those of you who have been out and about on your own as I don't think I'll be managing that for quite a while.

Congrats on all your babies ladies.. Sorry to hear about all the b/fding issues, it will get easier..
Fot those having trouble settling their bubs at the 2-3am feeds, i found not waking her a godsend, unless shes done number 2's i dont chnge her and i feed her in the dark so she doesnt fully wake u and she lightly sleeps through her feed.. back in bed straight after and find im only up 20min at the most! Just thought you might like to try it and see how you go.
Congrats again and your babies are georgous, i feel like its been forever since Kylah was born but the first month is the hardest, after that it alot easier and the smiles make your heart melt!
*Lurker Out*
EDIT: Forgot to mention, someone asked how long the 3am continue for.. well kylah is almost 11 weeks old and thats the only time she wakes.. i bath her at 7pm and bed at 7.30 she stirs between 2.30 - 4am and thats when im quick to get her up before she cries or its to late shes awake.. then she sleeps till 7.30 feeds and sleeps till tenish and then up for a few hours.. but in saying that i might try phase out that feed.. your bubbas are still a bit young for that.. but i might start doing a 10.30 feed and she might sleep thru.. YAY i have a plan, thanks ladies

Monster - I feel the same about DH going back to work. Am terrified about doing it all on my own!! Still I know that I just need to get on with it!
We are going all out now to try and get Ollie weened off the formula, which is a bit tricky as he is a real little piglet and settles for a long sleep when he has a full tummy, so its a bit of a catch 22. Still we think that a couple of days of unsettled bubs could be worth it in the long run. I put him on the breast to feed, but he is pretty lazy and doesnt make much of an effort and ends up all sleepy and dozy, so I have to take him off and try to wake him up a bit to get him interested. The lactation consultant says its because he knows he will get a bottle anyway....(I am not so sure that he "knows" this already!) and that I have to make him work for it a little harder. Its pretty hard to be firm when they are so cute and even harder when they are grizzley!!

Oh SimSam I so hear you! Lauren just goes to sleep as soon as I put her to the breast! I also have a 5 min let down wait, she goes biserk having to suck suck suck and not getting much, so I give up and give her a bottle of EBM! I have been expressing like mad, so have 6 feeds ahead stocked up in the fridge! At night I just cannot be bothered with the fuss and offer her the bottle of EBM straight away. Hey what ever works and keeps them happy, I say just do what you gotta do!
Boy no one told me about breastfeeding issues, I thought it all just naturally happened!!!

Sounds like quite a few of us are having issues with bfeeding. My MW was mortified when she saw the state of my left nipple. Has been spending quite alot of time with me trying to get Eva to latch on correctly. She wants me to stick with bfeeding, and will talk to me about epressing later on, once I get bfeeding sussed.
Eva is such a wee angel during the day. However, she had a shocker of a night last night. She was really unsettled and basically screamed from 11.30pm - 3am. Both DH and I are exhausted. I think she had an upset tummy as she did lots of green poos (sorry TMI). Not sure what you can do about that, or if there is anything I could have given her. I wonder if it was due to something I ate yesterday? It's so tempting to keep feeding her when she screams, but I think that only added to the problem.

I think its really common for wee bubs to fall asleep at the boob, as its so nice and warm next to mummy etc. , HOWEVER, for those ladies expressing, make sure you get some time with bubs suckling, otherwise you will eventually run out of milk...your boobs only produce more from the suckling of a baby (not a breast pump!) - the more baby sucks, the more milk you produce. You just have to be patient...Bella used to feed for 1 - 1/2 at each feed with her falling asleep and me trying to wake her up etc. but as they get more alert, their feeding improves...Hope that helps a little

For those of you with sleepy babes, you might want to try a cold flannel to keep baby awake when suckling. At the hospital when we were trying to get the hang of bfeeding, Tala was really sleepy and lazy suckling and the midwife on duty did everything she could to keep him awake while he was feeding. It sounds harsh, but he wasn't that upset (being on the breast made up for it) and it worked a treat. We had him undressed apart from a nappy and just put a cold flannel on his face and forehead and kept doing it until he got going properly. Best of all, we only had to do that for one feed, after that he was all good.

I expressed and fed Spencer for 5 weeks and then when I tried to get rid of my milk that took 5 weeks (and I slept with savoy cabbage leaves in my bra) and in actual fact still isn't entirely gone so that isn't necessarily true, many women express full time, so long as you have a good let down it shouldn't be a problem. I did latch him on in the first 6 weeks but I believe I could have just expressed then as well, if that is what works best for you, do it. Spencer slept longer after having EBM and DH was able to do some of his feeds for me whilst still giving him breastmilk.

Ollie is still being a piglet with the formula! I put him on the breast, and he latches on okay - but sometimes needs a bit of encouragement (we use the cold flannel trick too!!) During the night he wont settle unless he gets a decent top up of the formula - so not sure how we are going to get him off it! Mw is coming this morning so will have a chat to her about it. I am not ready to give up on the breast feeding....we may just have to continue doing both!

SimSam can you top him up with EBM?? I will be doing that if Lauren needs extra after a breastfeed, especially, so I can get some sleep!!
Just a thought, as that is what I have thought of doing??
Lauren had formula top ups in hospital last week too, so don't feel bad about it, as long as they have a full tummy IMO!!

I have been trying to use EBM as well, but when I express I am only getting about 40mls after 10mins pumping each side!!! So I dont know whether that means my milk is lazy too - or that he is actually getting quite a lot and there is not much left!!! During the day I am trying to not give him formula - just keep putting him back on the boob if he is still hungry - I want him to figure out that if he is hungry he has to suckle, so figure if I just keep putting him back on the boobie he will eventually figure it out!!!

SimSam you are going to hate me for this, but if I express for 10 mins I can get 120-140 mls off! There has to be a reason my boobs are soooooooo huge and uncomy and I guess its because I have oodles of milk!
Lauren hasn't slept since her last feed at 10am, she's just laying there in her buggy looking around. I thought she might still be hungry so offered her a 20ml top up and she spat it everywhere! Obviously she's not hungry just having an awake period! Gosh so much to learn!!

Our main issue is getting Eva to sleep. Didn't use to be a problem until a few days ago. She was really tearful and unsettled when we put her down at 6 last night and again this morning. Takes about 1 1/2 -2hrs to settle her, by which time we're at our wits end
Saying that, she had a really good night. I followed Kylahsmums advice with the nighttime feed and she went straight back to sleep after her feed!

We are still having moments with cyring wakefull-ness. But I am proud to say I got thru yesterday with no tears!!! DH has been fabulous - poor Blair gets passed from one to the other whenever we can't settle him. I'm definately going to miss that when he goes back to work tomorrow, but 2 good feeds overnight (2:30 and 6:30) also using Kylahsmum suggestion definately boosted my confidence. (DH was awake for the first one, and just sat there and watched us).
On the Mum side of things, I can't believe how much I took for granted the normal things - that seem to flare up post delivery. Bering able to walk at a normal spped without feeling like there is a melon stuffed up 'there'. The spare duvet which was folded up has now gone from the couch. It was there to raise the height a little and provide some extra softness to one bruised and battered area (3rd degree/level 3 tear). For the first time in over a week, my nipples didn't shreak out in pain when the towel accidentally brushed over them after a shower, and I don't grimmace and brace myself when Blair feeds from my left hand side. Oh the joy in small things

Im so glad my advice helped you ladies!! Its how i stay sane and not have to sleep during the day cos she goes straight back down after a feed, as long as i dont miss her stirring and she starts crying otherwise im up for an hour!..
Regarding the expressing, the forst time i expressed i got heaps, like 100ml in 10 min.. but it all disappeared..in the end it was takig me 2 days to get 100ml and that was gone in one feed. It was like my milk was slowly decreasing.. so i introduced a 10.30 'dream feed of formula' and it was the most kylah had ever been settled.. in saying that my milk went away and shes formula fulltime now..
So dont feel bad ladies, sometimes it just has to be! As long as your wee angels are happy and healthy whocan complain!
I must admit, i followed all you guys throughout the last month of your pregnancy as i missed my belly sooo much.. So congrats and welcome to motherhood

Hey simsam, the more you express after each feed the more you will end up getting out. 40ml is pretty good to get after he has taken a whole feed from you so don't get down hearted about that. Also you should express 10mins on one side and then 5-6mins on the other. You can also get breastmilk collectors, avent make some really good ones, you wear them on the side that you are not feeding or expressing from and it collects the milk, as you have probably noticed you get a let down or at least some leakage from the other side when feeding, I could get 40+mls that was otherwise being soaked up by a nipple pad you can then freeze in ice cubes or pop in the fridge for later.
And don't get upset about giving formula, it is not the evil that some people like to make out. Spencer had formula top ups and went completely on formula at around 3 months, if they are happy healthy and well nourished that is all that matters, that and a happy healthy mummy.

Cuppatea - I never thought of catching all the leaking milk while feeding. . That will surely boost the amount of milk I am expressing off.
Arabella is growing beautifully . . 9lb 5oz she has thrush so is on medication and I am using canestan ointment on my nipples just in case(TMI).
Midwife is handing us on to Plunket really going to miss her!
Good luck to everyone for tonight!!
