not such a new thing, but Jake is hitting big time. He slaps really really hard and giggles. I keep saying "no, we don't hit people" but he giggles at me and hits again. I don't wanna hit him back as I figure that's a bit counter-productive, any ideas? he slapped me in the face today and as we got up at 6AM with no naps today I was very very angry and had to walk away...but regardless of my mood, i really don't want him hitting.

What seems to work for us is giving no attention. Saying that hitting hurts, mummy, daddy etc. And putting them in their cot, room etc with no toys. going back a short time later asking them if they would like a cuddle "mummy loves your cuddles".

Praising all the time for nice play.

that's the same as we do - saying "no, we don't hit, that hurts!" and then putting them down and walking away - because usually for kids that age, that immediate loss of attention from mum or dad is enough to make them pretty upset and teach them that hey, if i hit then mummy goes away and i'm left to play by myself.

definately praise for nice play too like Maria said.. when he does play nice or give cuddles stress how much you like them, when he hits, just say no and put him down.. that way he's getting attention for the good behaviour not the bad.

Yeah, I'll try the no attention thing, but it doesn't help at the moment we are at the PIL's who think the sun shines out of Jake's bum!! He gets sooooo much attention and is going through so much change. Got more sleep today so am feeling a lot better about coping. Was nearly in tears all day yesterday. And Jake hasn't been hitting as much today.....hopefuly just a phase..if not, watch out palmy BBQ!

i have a feeling this will be an interesting day!!!!

Have got the family in on Jake's discipline in regards to hitting. Yesterday he thumped MIL and she put him down and said "i don't want to play with a boy who hits" and he stopped. I was impressed. She had been hitting him (lightly) back but he seemed to think of this as a game. Walking away seems to help

On another note I watched supernanny for the first time last night. I want to divorce Lewis and marry her now...go civil unions!!
