Hi all,
My baby is currently wrong way up and while there's still every chance it will move around on its own I need to start thinking about whether I want to get it manually turned if it doesn't (as I need to make the call at 34 weeks so they can book it in for me).
I'm meeting with a specialist to discuss in more detail and I've also done some reading on it but what I'd love is to hear from people who have been in this situation.
Specifically - what did you decide and why?
If you did it was it successful?
If it was successful was it your first, second, third child etc?

Hi there,
My baby was breech but for me I didn't find out until my waters broke at 35 weeks and then they didn't want to try the procedure in case my water ruptured again half way through turning him and also because there was reduced fluid because I was leaking constantly and also because of the type of breech he was (can't remember proper name, but his bum was engaged and his feet and head where up by my ribs)
I was actually given the choice to birth naturally if I wanted to, but they stongly suggested that I had a c/s. I choose c/s because of the risks, especially with him being my first.
Sorry that doesn't really help you at all.
You should trying spending lots of time on your hands and knees and doing downward dog (yoga pose), they can help give bubs room to turn.
Hope he/she decides to turn for you.

I have had two friends who have found out that their babies were breech recently - and they both tried ECV and it didn't work for either of them - but both were encouraged to try and birth naturally if they wanted to...

my second child (toby) was transverse and i had him turned, twice! the first time he turned back sideways so we did another and i had to stay in hospital overnight that time, to keep an eye on him. that time tho he did stay up the right way. I have a negative blood group so they gave me the anti D injection before the first one.
I had a great guy do the ECV for me. They scanned him first and then the guy put his hands on the bump and did a bit of pushing and shoving, but it didnt hurt or even feel that uncomfortable, then they scanned again adn kept an eye on me for an hour or so before sending me off.
In my case there was no way i would have been allowed to labour naturally so i was glad the second one worked and i would have tried very hard to get him turned again if it hadnt.
good luck with your decision.

With my son Ollie he was breech at 35 weeks and I went in and had the ECV and had two specialists who tried to turn him around without success. I was then booked in for an elective c/s. My waters broke the day before I was due to have Ollie so that was kind of good as at least I got to experience some natural labour. At the stage you are at you might find that baby may still turn around for you.

Hi
They thought my baby was transverse at 30 weeks. I told her she had to move and she seemed to listen! I had a scan at about 32 weeks, and she had moved around and has stayed where she is meant to be.
My friend had a successful ECV, although she described it as "not a very nice day".
Personally, I would have given it a go if I had needed to - I would do most things to avoid a c-section.
Also, while you might need to be booked in by 34 weeks, they probably wouldn't do the ECV until later, and your bub might move by them. If you did book in, you could always change your mind if you decided against it later?

Thanks guys - it's great getting feedback about all this.
Still doing the exercises to help the baby turn (urgh makes heartburn worse though )
That's a good point DJ. The ECV wouldn't happen until week 36 if I decided to go ahead so yeah, even if its still the wrong way at 34 weeks I guess I could book it and then keep trying to turn it myself.

And if worse comes to worse and you have a c/s they are not that bad. A c/s was my worse case scenario but I think I had worked it up to be far worse than what it actually is. Next time I would like to have natural if possible but if i ended having another c/s it wouldn't be the end of the world.
Fingers crossed bubs will turn for you.

Are they going to try and turn bubs at 36 weeks? My spec told me 38 weeks which I thought was incredibly late seeing as if he engages, they can't move him. Maybe Chch healthcare system is just c**p compared to up north? And this wasn't a public specialist either!
I will be trying it if I can avoid a c-sect. Do you know if they take time off etc around Xmas? That's my only concern is that they'll either do things early or late because its an elective procedure?

Specifically - what did you decide and why?
I didn;'t want a ceasar so would give anything a try
If you did it was it successful?
No. He was a big baby and my palcnta was at the side so they couldn't 'flip him'.
If it was successful was it your first, second, third child etc?
No successful but he was my 3rd child.
I also had to have an anti d due to neg blood group.
They first scanned my to see where the baby was lying. then the dr push his bum up and tried to push his head around. The Dr was very nice and kept apologising if he hurt me - it was uncomfrtable but did not hurt.
He only did that about 5 times. Then they gave me some - ventilin I think it was - to relax the uterus etc... so had to breathe that in for around 15 mins. Then he came in again scanned again and tried moving bubs again - same way. But nope Rhyley was not budging.
This was done at 37 weeks. So i was booked in for elective ceasar. I could of tried naturally but was advised against it due to size of baby ( he was 9lb 4oz born)
You still have plently of time for bubs to turn. My daughter #2 - was breeched up until 34 weeks where she went engaged. She was such and easy birth as well.

i had an ECV attempted with jack at 37wks. it was unsuccessful and very uncomfortable. he got about half way around then flipped back again so they gave up. we then talked about trying to deliver him and also elective c/s...i decided to go for the c/s as the mw and ob said alot of breech babies end up in emergency c/s anyway. i was booked in for c/s at 39wks.
my advice...try the ECV and if it works yay! if it doesn't it's not the end of the world. you still have time left for bubs to turn yet, keep up with the exercises to encourage him/her

I had an ECV with my first bubs. I decided to do it as I really wanted to avoid a c-section if possible & I had tried the exercises, homeopathic medicines & acupuncture but none had worked. It was pretty uncomfortable but definitely worth it in the end as it was successful & Matt stayed in the right position afterwards.

Nope we talked to the OB and weighed it up and decided we didn't like the risks.
However as it turned out by the time they would have done it there was so little fluid left due to her being IUGR they wouldn't have been able to anyway.

I had a breech baby and decided to let nature take it's course - if she turned, fine, if she didn't, I would go for an elective c-section. She didn't turn, so I had an elective c-section at 38 weeks, and it was a fantastic experience. It was great knowing the day that I was going to have my baby, it was a very calm and straight forward experience. I would do it again! I had alot of faith in my obstetrician and as he said 'c-sections are just another way to give birth'. I was back working from home when my baby was 5 days old, driving after 11 days. Breastfeeding was not a problem (as you sometimes hear it can be after a c-section). I don't feel like I missed out on anything by not labouring. If things had gone to plan I would have been happy to labour and give birth, but my c-section ended up being such a great experience for me.

Hi guys
Just to update:
Have my ECV (I was 37 weeks) on Monday and it was successful - baby is now head down and engaged! The procedure was really quick (a couple of minutes max) and relatively painless. I understand that I also had a lot going for me in that a) baby was in a good position head and feet wise to be able to be turned; b) baby was average size c) lots of amniotic fluid d) cord was in a good position and wasnt likely to get in the way.
Afterwards I felt light headed for most of the afternoon and had a session with my acupuncturist which really helped.
So for me the ECV was a great (after having tried everything else) and I really didnt want to have an elective c-section. So fingers crossed for a "normal" labour and birth now!

I had an ECV done just before 38 weeks and it was succesful. Not the most fun day out, but not as bad as people made out and I'm glad I did it.
I had some people who tried to talk me out of it, but the alternative was a c-section as was a footling breach so no chance of birthing naturally.
I went into labour two days later and had baby at home (as we had planned). So a great result.

had an ECV today.... didnt work and have a CS booked in. he has one foot partially engaged, one foot sticking out, and his butt is resting on his almost engaged foot.... so no way im going to try deliver naturally, unless he turns himself.... but im 37+5 and he has been breech since 19 weeks.... so FXd, but i wont be getting my hopes too high...

Feeling better for reading this.
Found out yesterday that baby is transverse breech (after being full breech 3 weeks ago).
I really don't want a c-section (due to my own stupid fears).
But reading the posts of those that had them (lulu's in particular) I feel a lot better about it.
I'm seeing my MW again in a fortnight (I'll be 34w+5d) so if he's still breech I'll be off for a scan and to talk about an ECV (which scared the jeepers out of me!).
Nice to see it's worked for some, and those that it didn't work for had a good c-section experience

Great to know!
The reading I've done suggests that second and subsequent babies are more likely to go transverse (and turn easier) due to being previously stretched out.

Ok am bumping this as I've just come back from mw and baby girl is breech
She said we've got 4 weeks for her to turn on her own, then we'll have a scan to see what's happening and if she's still breech then, we'll try acupuncture & ECV before booking in for a c-section at 38 weeks.
Is there anything I can do to try and help this baby turn before then? Does ECV hurt adn excuse my ignorance but how do they do it?!
I've read through this thread adn it doesn't sound like it helped in the majority of cases, or am I wrong?
REALLY don't want a c-section but my mw won't birth a breech and she said only 1 obstertrician in Wellington would even try and certain conditions had to be met first.
TIA

Awwww that sucks Emmecat
But i recommend 100% Moxibustion Sticks!
T was breech at 37 weeks, i was 100% sure i wasnt going to try have her turned, i didnt like the risks involved. I went to get acupuncture and went away with moxi sticks instead.
The night we tried them, i had T turn while doing it, it was the 1st time using them. They have really good success rates. You can even buy them online. I got them for free from Hutt Hospital from the lady that did maternity acupuncture
Im not sure if you have heard of them, but here is a linky
http://acupuncturetoday.com/abc/moxibustion.php - Moxibustion
Because the link isnt very good, edited to say i used the sticks, we heated them and DP held them by my pressure points on my little toe. I think it was 10min on each toe, thats how long it took for T to move. I knew when she moved because it F***en hurt lol

check out the spinning babies website - there is some great info on there... and dont panic!
oh and because it is your second child i think that the ECV would be easier on your body and possibly more chance of success. They basically just rotate baby with their hands by manipulating the outside of your tummy - having a scan to see where everything is first though.

38 weeks!!! Addie was 39 weeks 3 days when she turned - give bubs a chance You're only 31 weeks anyway, there's heaps of time.
You could compromise - a midwife suggested if Addie was still breech when I went into labour I could ask them to give me an epidural, prep me for theatre, then give the ECV a good go (more of a go than they would have without an epi, as I've heard that yes, it does hurt), and if that didn't work then they could go ahead and do the c section (and if it did they could wheel me back out and I'd try to push her out). I was all prepared to try that, I wouldn't have signed c section consent form until after they'd given ECV a go.
See if you can find a Bowen therapist down there, that's what worked for me (although it doesn't always work, ask AzzaNZ, my therapist reckoned they can turn something like 75% of babies).

If you do have an ECV, dont do what I did and have it at 36 weeks. I thought rather have it early so that if the first attempt doesnt work there is time for a second try.
10 minutes after the ECV our son was born by emergency c-section
*edited to add: try moxibustion, positioning exercises (spinning babies), accupuncture, homeopathy (pulsatilla) and bowen therapy. If nothing works, then ECV.

Emmecat - I'm 37 weeks and still breech but hoping to turn!
I have given birth vaginally to first son (19 years ago!) so really expected to do so this time to. I want to avoid C section if I can and my mw was confident we could try a V birth if this one is a bum or knee breech.
However today she told me that the hospital (Welington) are not very hapy to delver a breech full stop uness by c section as it is becoming a 'lost skill'. Very disapointing.
So tonight I went for my first accupuncure session and had moxa stick also. Have been given a stick for home use too. Hoping I will have him turn by himself before scan and appointment at hospital on monday.
You still have stacks of time left to turn so good luck! I will send you lots of turning vibes :)

So, bubs is being naughty and has flipped around again after not making her mind up which way around she wanted to sit for weeks, but was head down last week. 36w today. Have an appointment at the hospital tomorrow to talk about ECV....
How painful is it really? and do they give you any pain relief or anything?
Anyone care to just run over the procedure for me? I know that there are some risks to having it done too...so nervous about it, but really don't want a C-sec!

heaf3, its not painful, more uncomfortable.
If it follows how mine went you'll go in, meet the OB and they'll scan to check baby. They'll discuss the procedure and whether or not they are willing to do it.
Then you'll get on a hospital bed, move clothes away from your bump and they will put velcro straps around your bump with a monitor so they can keep an eye on babies heartbeat.
You'll be given a mask to breathe in a muscle relaxant.
Then the OB will check the heartbeat and all is ok, cover your bump in ultrasound gel and use her hands to try push baby around.
For me it was a lot of pressure and I ended up holding my breath while she was doing it because it felt almost like I was being sat on.
My ECV worked, baby turned head down with a very loud "crack". BUT... it turns out his cord wasnt in the best position and when he turned he also engaged and the cord got caught in between his head and my pelvis so he was born 10 minutes later by emergency c-section.
The only thing I would have done differently if we were doing it again would be to book the ECV for after 37 weeks. I feel bad that my little boy was born earlier than he should have been!

I don't know if they checked where it was on the scan before the ECV, I don't remember them mentioning it, the OB seemed more concerned by where his legs and feet were and also by his size (they estimated him to be a lot smaller than he was).

now my next question is, has anyone had a second attempt at an ECV? they said I could try again on friday if I wanted to. in the meantime I have just been for acupuncture today and have another appt on thursday. they said they weren't overly confident that it would work but that it would be worth a shot if i wanted because it would be a different day so there could be more fluid or bubs may be in a better position to turn.
opinions please...will talk to my MW tomorrow about it.

Argh, I know its prob too late, but Weegee talked about going into labour, having an epi and then having a go at an EVC as usually its pain that can reduce the effectiveness of the evc? (this is just going by memory from what Ive read, Ive never needed an EVC so dont know the ins and outs of it, but I tohught I would try to remember JIC I needed to try it one day!)

Hey team,
Just wondering, would they do a ECV if you have an anterior placenta?

Just thought I'd add in my experience here...had my ECV today and it didn't work. A lot was stacked against me... first time mum, frank breech baby (feet above head) and a bum firmly wedged in place. For me it was quite painful and I wasn't expecting that after all this talk of 'discomfort', not to scare anyone but just I'd say be prepared for that as a possibility! Also the medication dropped my BP very low and made me feel really wierd and a bit sick, again just something else to be aware of
I still think it was worth a try though, and I'd go through it again for a subsequent baby. So not so awful that I'd never go through it again.
C-Section now booked in, as they don't advise 'natural' birth for a first time mum being breech.

Yea I had a ECV with footling breech. (first baby) I tell people not to do it... make sure they tell you everything about it. i felt pressured into it! was very scary! babies can be breech for a reason out of your control!

I had a ECV at 37 weeks. I thought it was totally fine and worth it. The worst bit was being hooked up to an IV and the drugs to raise your pulse/relax you. It took a lot longer than I thought, I was in the hospital from 11am till 3pm, in the maternity unit stuck in bed for 2 hours of that time.
My midwife made a nice point that if the baby doesn't turn or reverts back to breech again then it is probably meant to be and for reasons we may never know - like something to do with the cord.

Hi, I'm just bumping this thread with my experience. We had an ECV yesterday at 38w 4d. We found out baby was breech at 37 weeks after a routine scan to check growth - I suspect baby has been breech for weeks but my midwife was just as shocked as we were.
We chose to do the ECV because I really didn't want to have a c-section, although was prepared to have one if it was necessary. We did a lot of research about the process and the risks associated, but felt that we would be at the hospital so if anything went wrong we would be in good hands. We arrived at the hospital and my midwife monitored baby for a while to check its heartrate. A registrar came in and did a scan to confirm baby's position and the location of the cord etc. All seemed well so they gave me the ventilin via injection and then we waited for it to kick in. It wasn't very nice, made my heart race and my pulse shot up. I got a bit of a headache and felt really nauseous, but I'm not sure if thats because of the meds or because I hadn't eaten since breakfast (they advised us not to). The registrar and obstetrician came in and scanned me again to check. Then they lowered the bed flat and down a bit more and got me to relax. The ECV wasn't as bad as I was expecting. I was expecting a really painful chinese burn, but while it was uncomfortable it wasn't like a chinese burn at all. I just closed my eyes and tried to breathe deep and slow, and it worked first go. I think it probably took about 2 minutes. Then they scanned me again to check baby's position, and then left. My midwife stayed with me to monitor me and baby. It seemed I was having regular contractions, but they died off later that night.
Every one has to make their own decision about whether to have an ECV, but I think you also need to take into consideration other circumstances like if its your first child, how much weight you might be carrying around your belly (to enable them to manipulate your belly easily), perhaps your pain threshold, and how you feel about other less "invasive" procedures and/or c-section etc. I agree with what someone said earlier, make sure you ask heaps of questions. For me I was prepared to try it to avoid a c-section, but I wasn't going to try acupuncture (its not for me). I did try a downward platform for me to lie on but it gave me a headache from the blood rush. I couldn't do downward facing dog as I have carpal tunnel (during pregnancy only) and I can't support my weight.

I'm facing the decision of an ECV. Am 36w2d with a breech baby, have no idea what kind of breech. I'm honestly sh*te scared of an ECV and am not sure whether I want to do it? Baby is measuring in the 10th percentile so I have no idea. I am so lost and confused
