Hi everyone...
I'm a bit new to this "message board business" but thought I would give it a whirl anyway as I am after some advice as such. I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and we are trying to get pregnant. After 2 years and only 1 period! I have now (finally) been refered to the gynecologist. One month later and still waiting for an appointment I have decided to get the ball rolling myself, my GP has put me on Metformin which seems to have regulated my periods as such, as in now I am actually getting them! I want to start looking at my cycle and working it all out but not sure which are the best ovulation kits etc.
It would be really great if anyone would be willing to share their experiences, or advice with me

Hi Trinab welcome to ohbaby! sorry you have had to come over to the infertility threads but we are a nice bunch of gals to hang out with hehe. I too have PCOS and have been TTC for 2 and a half years i originally tried a number of rounds of clomid with no ovulation then was put on metformin and had an ovarian drilling and lap and dye done in september. I then did a round of clomid over christmas in conjunction with met (as some clomid restsistant women have joy with ovulation with the combo) and didn't ovulate but i am now at the end of another cycle of 150mgs of clomid and i did ovulate this cycle YAY! if nothing works by about july then our funded IVF round will come up! Dont know if my babbling is any help but there you go lol!

Thats good that you have got the ball rolling, when you finally get a specialist appointment they will probably try you on clomid (clomiphene is its other name) to see if you respond to that. In terms of ovulation kits there are a number of websites you can get them off i got mine from baby4you (i think thats what it is called) but i know there is another american website that have them heaps cheeper bellababysmum (Jess) knows the website so maybe PM her if she doesnt see this thread and you could also try charting to work out what your body is doing.....Jess has made a thread about the charting basics the TTC boards so have a look there its really helpful

good luck hun and i hope you get some answers soon! and come and chat anytime!

Thank you so much for sharing! I haven't had anyone to really discuss things with that actually knew what I was talking about and I didn't even THINK of looking for a forum or message board but I am 100% glad that I did now. I have ordered some ovulation stick things so will put these to use in a couple of weeks and see what's happening, have also bought a BBT themometer and signed up to Fertility Friend.com that helps chart everything - hopefully I will start to understand everthing in the coming months!

I also have PCOS and managed to conceive quite quickly. I charted for about 6 months before even TTC (couldn't handle the disappointment of BFN). I also started on the PCOS diet. There is a great book called PCOS diet by Collette Harris. I don't know if it made a difference or not but made me feel like I was more in control and that it wasn't just the drugs doing the work. For me it was a head thing.

I was lucky and ovulated every 2nd month so made it slightly easier. Good Luck with it all.

Hi trinab!

I too have PCOS and found out while I was in the UK in 2005 after not having a period for 6 months, I was really worried as I have always wanted children and was concerned that this would mean we may stuggle to conceive, I have always had erratic periods but thought that was just the way it was for me, but 6 months seemed a lot longer than usual. We decided to go off the pill as soon as we found out (January 06) and if it happened good and if not then we could get treatment sooner. I didn't get another period in 2006! We arrived back in NZ in mid November and found out in January 07 that I was 8 weeks pregnant (after being told by the GP that she thought I had Giardia due to the symptoms I was having!! aka morning sickness) I just hadn't thought it would be possible for me to be pregnant and she didn't ask if I could be! I hadn't thought it would be possible becasue I was under the impression that if you don't get your period you aren't ovulating, apparently this isn't always the case! So it took us nearly a year to fall pregnant after I went off the pill. One of the strangest things for me was when I had my cesar, I heard the surgeon pointing out that "this is what a polycystic ovary looks like" to the student midwife who was there while they were operating!

I have pcos too but i was really thin when i found out at 16 i had it but since then i put weight on only a little tho at a good weight now so i dont understand why docters put me on metformin after i read i research its all about being insulin resisitant and cutting out carbs i thought why they put me on this i cant go back to square 1 and be really really slim again so i come off them and went onto femzone herb i dont know whatthe hospital are going to say about that but im hoping if femzone dont work that i can go on clomid.

Another PCOS here. Got diagnosed when I started growing hair on my chin and couldn't stop putting on weight. I mentioned to the GP that we may be wanting to start trying for a baby a year or 2 down the track. Next minute we are at the fertility clinic and doing tests. 2 rounds of clomid later.....now we have 3 daughters all very close together. Found it easier to get pregnant naturally straight after having the first. We did try again for a 4th last year with no luck, but are holding off at the mo as came to our senses lol. PCOS is probably one of the better types of infertility to have as usually plenty of options for getting pregnant

PCOS diagnosed here after 1 year of trying to get pregnant with no periods. Then tried naturopathy, Metformin, Clomid and finally IVF.

IVF worked perfectly for us, and we got pregnant first go- for me that proves that sometimes you just need to get the little egg into the right place to make babies! There was nothing else wrong with either of us, thank goodness, and we had great specialists.

My only advice would be dont wait too long- we waited far too long (3 years) before finally getting serious with treatment and I wish I had seen a fertility specialist earlier.

Good luck!
