Nuts. Even as a second time mum, the thought of being sent home straight from the delivery suite, within hours of giving birth, scares the cr*p out of me. And we wonder why rates of PND are going up - there's no support! ------------- Mum to two gorgeous girls! |

I would've loved to leave within a few hours after giving birth - in fact I think having to go into hospital to be induced, and then having to stay afterwards because Seb wouldn't feed were major contributors to my PND... I HATED hospital. I'd like to know how many of those choose to leave as soon as they could.
ETA: Of course if they're actually forcing people who don't want to leave early that's not on  -------------

I chose to leave 2 hours after having Joey and I wanted to with Lily too but decided to stay the night WHICH I HATED as I was so buggered.
I hope people aren't geting forced out but I wouldn't be surprised if the media isn't making it clear a lot of women DO want to go home straight away... ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I would have left sooner too but the nurse made me stay until 10am so she could do her rounds 1st and then sort out my discharge. I rang DH at 7:30am (would've been earlier but thought I'd let him have a sleep in) and asked him to come and get me as I didn't want to stay any longer - I wanted peace & quiet (I got to the ward at 11:30pm and I was stuck in a room with 4 other mums 1 who spent all night - literally all night - complaining). -------------

| A friend of ours went home after giving birth, they made her wait 4 hours, this was her 4th bubba though and she had a very straight forward delivery. Gosh things have changed alot from when our mum's had us, they were in hospital for like 10 days! |

I would have gone home right after having Benjy but my MW thought I should stay overnight. I was out of there ASAP the next morning though, I was SO bored and lonely! ------------- Mel, Mummy to E: 6, B: 4 and:

That's exactly what I'm thinking too. I spent Wellington weekend in the maternity ward in Wellington and there were plenty of empty beds as mothers decided to go home early and have the extra help at home over the weekend rather than stay in hospital. |

That is pretty scary. I hope I don't get asked to leave in a hurry from Wellington hospital when I have bubs # 2 although I am going to try and transfer to Kenepuru if there is a spare bed available as it's closer to home. ------------- Sebastien 2 years old Olivier 3 3/4 years old |

yeah I agree I don't thin kthe problem is so much people going home early the shortage of M/W if LMC wern't so streched eg having too many woman on their book's then they would have more time for each woman and then the ones who want to go home can with the confidence that their M/W would be available to help. I think other's are right I think you will find alot of those woman would of been pretty ok to go home anyway like other's have said its a noisy place to be when all you want to do is sleep and focus on your baby. That is why I am doing another homebirth no issues with this sort of thing then if I do end up at hospital its casue I need to be. ------------- Deborah Mum to:

The article indicated those being discharged early include those being transfered to separate maternity units. It may also be about timing in the day too. If you gave birth at 10am and decided you wanted to go home because you had good support rather than staying in hospital you'd be ready to go by mid afternoon, you wouldn't go home at midnight, or transfer to a maternity hospital at that time. I'm the opposite lol, I WILL be getting my 3 nights at Birthcare come hell or high water - it's the only break I am going to get from Maya and the gremlins to get to know baby.
I do think that the media frame things in a sensationalist way and that a number of those women probably did choose to go home early, but there is definitely a pressure on 2nd and sub time mums to go home early, even here in Auckland where we have specialist postnatal care facilities. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)
