I think that it is child abuse - so yes she should be charged.  I so feel sorry that this child is going to be born into a volitile home if the news report is anything to go by.  It just makes me so sad as I have several friends who would do anything to have a child.

Ok what a fruit loop but it isn't illegal to drink so she really can't be charged with anything.

I think you've hit the nail on the head Becks.  No matter how wrong getting intoxicated while pregnant is it's not actually illegal.  I guess they could try and build a case on reckless endangerment or something and I think they can get cyfs to keep an eye on the family but other than that I don't think the police can do anything.

The only thing I think they can do is get CYFS involved.

Anyone who drinks like that while pregnant should have their baby taken away, they dont deserve the little thing.

Why not be able to charge her...just as bad as child abuse isn't it?

I would consider it child abuse, despite the fact that the child hasn't bee born yet - it will, soon, and she is well aware that she's pregnant obviously!

I don't think that the NZ law consider our babies as people until after they're born.  I remember reading about a woman who was 7 months preg when she was hit by a drunk driver and lost her baby, he got done for reckless driving but couldn't be charged for manslaughter even though he killed her baby.

I agree, she's obviously too selfish to think about the child. I hope CYFS keep a close eye on the familty after the baby is born

It is so sad that there are couples out there desperate to have their own child or even a healthy child and this person obviously doesn't give a toss.
She should adopt the baby out when it is born as she obviously doesn't care about it and then a loving family can have it.

I have no doubt that CYFS will be looking at this family in the future if not already.

This sort of behaviour is how the cycles begin or continue. Lets just hope there aren't more children involved.

that makes me sooooooo mad! and i would love to see her charged with something, but then if thats going to be seen as an 'offence' then someone would go on about abortions being seen as an 'offence' and rah rah rah, all that would open a HUGE can of worms.

but to be honest, my stepdaughters mother drank heavily (as in two bottles of wine when she found out i was with her ex, the father of her unborn baby) and so far her 2year old is ok, but she is now about 6month preg with her partner of 7months, and still drinks a lot, (she works at our rugby clubrooms so i see her everyweekend) and i see her have atleast one beer every weekend, and her excuse is "well Izobel turned out fine"

so that woman might be in the same state of mind, stupid b**ch

Thats so sad, but i heard on the news that the police said they probably wouldn't be able to charge her with anything because it wasnt an offence (tho i think it is )

I think if you make the decision to keep your baby , your making the decision to sacrifice drinking and anything else harmful to bub for 9 months, which ,in the great scheme of things isnt THAT long (tho when your pregnant it feels like it)
why should the child suffer your mistakes ?

A few months ago i had an "am i pregnant moment " and told one of my friends , who had drunken a bit , and smoked heavily all through her pregnancy, and i said i was worried cos id been drinking and smoking , and she said her daughter was fine ,so dont worry about it, yes her daughter is fine, and i drank with Caitlyn , (before i knew i was pregnant!) but its a risk i would not willingly chose to take ,but drinking as much as that woman did-thats very sad .
I hope for the babies sake its ok

ETA-no offence intended to anyone , these are just my 2 cents (or rather 10 cents , cos we no longer use 2 cents )

I agree...I went to dinner the other day from work and ordered a Lemon Lime Bitter (Stupid me, because I didnt know that bitter is alcohol). I buy it all the time from the supermarket and thoughts its one and the same thing!!

When I found out yesterday, I freaked....I started to cry cause I thought that I harmed my baby (I know I am such a sook) but its sooo important too me that I take care of the baby I am carrying!! And I am paranoid!!

And then you have woman like HER...who knowingly (sp??) drink even tho it might be bad for baby!! these people should be banned from having babies!!

Oh that's interesting, I didn't know that bitters is alcoholic either.  My ex-flatmate used to drink it all the time while pregnant when we went out for lunch, then again she also drank wine over new years when she was preg so maybe she knew (selfish cow).

MrsMojo - Tell em about it...I freaked out as I thought the stuff in supermarket is the same as in Cafe etc...but nah did some research on net and it said it was 48% alcohol....but the 3 drops that they do put in the drink is not going to harm the baby! Like I said I ended up thinking that I hurt the baby!! Never again will I drink that stuff in a cafe or Rest.

when i was pregnant with C i was at Pauanui for new years , and i definetly wanted to drink , i was probably the only one there who could legally drink , and i couldnt ! but i didnt touch a drop, i just couldnt live with the guilt if something had happened
