OK so I don't really think of it as a disability as such, but I guess it is, and it's certainly a source of frustration so I thought I'd start a thread for us lucky mums of kids with ear problems to share that frustration!

The gremlins have had continuous ear infections, Mercedes started with a ruptured ear drum at 5 mths and Sienna wasn't far behind. Mercedes got her first lot of grommets at 9 mths, Sienna at 11 mths. Since then they've been plagued by infections, sometimes so bad that the gunk pours out of their ears all over their clothes, poor little things. Lots of pain which is probably one of the reasons they don't sleep well and we've been making regular trips to Starship to have their ears suctioned. They recognise it now when they get out of the lift and scream coz they hate it

They had their second lot of grommets put in two weeks ago today and Mercedes has already lost one . Spoke to their specialist this afternoon and he said their ears are some of the worst he has ever seen (and he runs the paed ENT clinic at Starship so he sees a lot of ears ). He wants them to have a blood test to check for immune disorders to rule out any underlying problems but he said he thinks they are just really unlucky with the shape of their eustachean tubes.

So far thankfully Mercedes hearing doesn't seem to have been affected, she's having another hearing test next week but it doesn't seem to be a problem, but Sienna's last hearing test a few months ago showed a small degree of high frequency loss. It means she still hears OK, but not wonderfully and it's been enough to affect her speech. We saw the speech therapist yesterday and she's given us some strategies to implement at home to encourage her language development.

Soooo... that's our story. I'm sure there are others who can relate!

ETA: my bad, it's high frequency not low frequency loss, means she has trouble isolating sounds from background noise.

I can relate.

Andrew has shocking ears. His ear infections started at 5 months as well and it wasn't until h was 16 months old that we finally got to see a specialist. Andrwe finally got the grommets in his ears in February 2006. That winter was great no infections. Summer 2007 one gromet fall out and he got an infection 3 weeks later. June 2007 he went to the specialist (and saw a lacky at the hospital) and he took the other one out . Ears got infected again and I went back to the specialist and we got them put back in November last year as well as tonsinals and adniods as well. Almost a year one we still hae them in and no problems yet.

Hearing is a funny thing with Andrew he has been tested and came back clear but i still think there is something up.

My poor Sienna The discharge from her ear stinks, it must be really nasty She was sitting on my knee and I could smell this awful smell but it wasn't the usual dirty nappy smell, then I realised it was coming from her ear. Must be from the infection. It's not copiously discharging but it's so yucky. Have dosed her on paracetamol and tucked her up with Willie coz she wouldn't settle and will ring the specialist in the morning. It can't go on like this, I hate to think how much pain she is in

Edited to fix my England...

Poor Sienna   I hope she gets some relief from this soon

Well, we are just at the beginning of this rollercoaster journey of ear problems.
Samantha has pretty much had constant ear infections for the past few months. Every time you get the all clear within days they are back with a vengence. We are yet to see a specialist yet, but I am in the process of changing doctors and am hoping if this pattern continues hopefully we can see one soon!

Emma, it has to have a lot to do with the sleep trouble because I have gone from a child that slept 12+ hours a night to one that is lucky to sleep an hour at a time without waking up screaming!   Ugh - EARS!!!!!!

How is Sam doing Sterryn?

I thought I'd better do a gremlin update - for the first time in months they are both well! We have had two weeks Starship-free for the first time in months! Sienna has to go next week for her hearing test and a check up, and Mercedes is having her grommets put back in yet again on 5 November but for the moment they seem to be pain-free, haven't needed any pamol or brufen for a good couple of weeks, and are relatively happy and a friend commented on Sunday that their green snotty noses have finally cleared up.

Yay for summer!

And yay for the landlord who has *finally* gotten his a into g with installing a DVS!

Woohoo Emma. 2 whole weeks problem free!

Well Sam is doing ok. We switched doctors and the new one is fantastic. He only needed to have one look at her ears before recommending Sam see a specialist. She has very bad glue ear which is really effecting her speech now so the hope is that we can get it sorted asap. His opinion was that she will most likely need grommets.
So the appointment is next Friday with the specialist. Hopefully a decision will be made then and we are not made to wait another few months

Here's to a ear problem free summer for all our girls!

Josh is now heading down this track as well. When we came back from Oz he got an ear infection (along with a number of other things) and on Tuesday I took him to the dr for something else and he did a full check and hello ear infection. He said if he gets another one by December we are going to the specialist.

Ugh, just got back from the specialist.
Sam's ears are quite bad apparently and the specialist didn't really see any options apart from Grommets. He didn't want to leave it over Summer to see if they would clear up as it is clearly effecting her speech already.

So surgery is booked for the 3rd November. Man, it is happening faster than I expected. My poor baby

Emma, you were going to tell us how the hearing test went?

Yep, sorry it was late and I didn't have the energy for long stories lol but wanted to wish you and Sam luck.

Hearing test was good, she passed so that's awesome news coz she failed the last one. It does mean that hearing might not be the only factor contributing to her speech problems, but the important thing is she can hear!

You'll be amazed at the difference grommets make. It's such minor surgery, still really scary I know but my girls went into surgery at 8am and we were home by 10am with no side effects, ongoing pain etc. Their grommets were reasonably successful too while they were in. We got both of ours done coming into summer (M was Sep, S was Nov) for the same reasons you mention. I don't regret it for a second. Hopefully Sam's will stay in a little longer than the gremlins and she will be all good when they come out. The specialist told us the younger they are when they go in the higher the chance of ongoing problems, M and S were 11 and 13 mths, Sam is a bit older which is a good thing too. Katherine's daughter had them put in at about 2 and hers have been great.

Yay for Sienna passing her hearing test - that is brilliant news
It's pretty scary to think they can't hear isn't it. The specialist yesterday said that Sam's right ear is so bad that he would be very surprised if she can hear out of it at all at the moment.
It does explain why she seems to have more selective hearing than usual though

I am really glad it is all going ahead so quickly. My Mummy instinct knew something wasn't right. It makes me very glad I changed doctors! I think if I hadn't we would still be on the rollercoaster of antibiotics and ear infections!

So I guess no more swimming lessons

Mum2Sam, she can still go swimming, just not for 2 weeks after her op. I asked our specialist about this, and he basically said there are just as many germs in the bath as there is in a pool, so after 2 weeks of keeping her head dry, we could get her ears wet.

Bella got her grommets put in in July and has only had one ear infection since, and that was treated with sofradex drops as opposed to AB's. She is so much happier and so am I!

Yep, swimming is fine. My gremlins can't swim atm coz they have had so many chronic infections recently. At one point Mercedes was growing all 3 of the most common types of ear infection-causing bacteria in one ear .

But they're good now and if they stay that way they'll be able to swim over summer.

Well it's done. I would like to say it was no big deal, but was actually a pretty horrible experience for me and for Sam
She went to sleep kicking and screaming and pretty much woke up the same way. She was so hysterical it took over an hour to calm her down and that was more that she was exhausted so fell asleep in the car on the way home
I have never heard my poor little girl scream like that. It was so horrible!
Anyway, after all that she is just fine now. You would never even know that today was any different from any other day except for one fantastic thing.....she has been chatting away all day. I swear she has said more the last few hours than she has in months! And some of the words are quite clear. So yay

Oh, and those of you that have done this already. How long before you can get the ears wet? With all the screaming and screaming going on afterwards I never got the chance to ask the nurse or doctor about it? I am wondering more about hair washing etc as my child has a nasty habit of running her breakfast/lunch/dinner laden hands through her hair

We were told wait 7 days for swimming, no hot pools, spa's etc and be careful when washing hair as the soapy water will not be so good.

Woohoo, yay Sam and Tyrell! I tried to text you this morning Sterryn to see how it went but realised I don't have your number. I was so sure I did!

Sorry to hear it was so awful for you both But very glad to hear the awful part was over quickly and Sam is back to her usual self again. Awesome about the talking too, it's amazing the difference the grommets make.

Hope the staff at Gillies were as good to you and Tyrell as they always are to us Amy, the daystay ladies are lovely, one of them was saying this morning that they've pretty much seen the gremlins grow up coz Mercedes was less than a year old the first time she went in.

She was fine this morning as expected. She must have known what was going on tho coz she was really clingy when we arrived which is unlike her, yet Sienna, who normally is clingy wasn't.

When the anesthatist went to take her out, she was ready to trot off quite happily with him but Sienna burst into tears which started Mercedes off and she ended up going off with him screaming. Poor Sienna was very subdued the whole time Mercedes was gone, Renata took her for a ride to take Maya to school and when they got back Mercedes was out already, the looks on their faces were so sweet, they were so excited to see each other!

Home now, she seems to be in a bit of pain so I have given her some Nurofen to boost the pamol she had at the hospital and they're both asleep.

He ended up replacing both grommets, the one that was still there was apparently half out so he took it out and put the T tubes in instead. And her right ear looks perfectly healthy, her left (where the grommet was right out) had some fluid but no infection, he said it's the best he's ever seen her ears so yay!

Oh and grrrr! at Southern Cross Sterryn! They have been particularly useless lately! They wouldn't cover Mercedes' latest op under their affiliation scheme coz she was only booked to have one grommet in, if it was two they would do it no worries, so instead we had to go thru the whole prior approval process

And we've been told absolutely no water in Mercedes ears at all at this stage, she even has to have cotton wool/vaseline in the bath just in case, but I think that's only coz she has a different type of grommet, usually it's only no water until the post op check which is 2 weeks post op.

Emma, I am so glad to hear that Mercedes' operation went well today. What a good girl she is.    Fingers crossed this grommet is problem free.
There was a little girl there at the same time that was a twin and she was very subdued without her sister. Maybe that is the trick

I have your phone number still I'm sure, so will text you mine Thanks for thinking of us though.

Sam had it done at the Southern Cross Hospital on the North Shore. The nurses were really lovely and Sam loved the teddy bear she was given

She is a very chatty girl it turns out. She has been non stop babbling all day today. It is so nice to hear. I can't wait for some words!

Still battling with Southern cross. I have now been told I have to provide all of Sam's GP records from birth, plunket clinic notes from birth and a letter from both the specialist and doctors confirming the information given. Ugh! I have threatened them with Fair go if this carrys on!

What do they want to confirm? That she's had ear infections? Why on earth would you subject your child to surgery if it wasn't completely neccessary? Seriously, Southern Cross do my head in!

We had a fun night, Mercedes spewed up the entire contents of her stomach at about midnight, I rang Healthline just to run it past them on account of her having had the op that morning and they said it could be a result of the anesthetic, or it could be a random tummy bug. I was quietly hoping it was the anesthetic so I'd only have her to deal with but no such luck, this morning Sienna was throwing up too Happy, happy days!

Still, at least the ears are well!

Oh and Southern Cross Gillies gives them all a Grommet Monkey after their ops, my girls now have 6 between them

Sienna has another ear infection . Her ear started discharging this morning, so we're off to the good ole Starship on Thurs to get it suctioned . Poor wee thing. The most frustrating thing is that we were just about to start a sleep training programme with them but we can't do it unless they're both well

We saw the immunologist last week and she wants to do some tests to check their immune function as she's not happy with how many bugs/viruses/infections they pick up. They had the first lot of bloods last Wed (which was awful, a thousand times worse than the grommets coz they were asleep for the grommets!). She wants them to have an extra immunisation, Pneumovax, which vaccinates against 23 strands of pneumoccocal as opposed to the 7 strands that the Prevenar they've already had vaccinates for. Then they have to have more bloods 3-weeks post-vaccine to check how their immune systems respond to it. She's also going to check their immunity response to the other vaccines they've had (DTapHib, HepB etc.)

How are the other ear kids going?

That is interesting about the immune function. Keep us updated on what happens.   Sam seems to be a bit like that. Constantly is sick with something. It is very worrying and annoying!

Your poor girls

We are plodding along nicely over here. Sam's speech seems to be improving (slowly). She is definitley more talkative which is nice. I am still waiting for Southern Cross to finalise their decision though - highly annoying!

I'm back this time it is Josh. He will be getting grommets at some stage early next year. He had 3 ear infections in 4 weeks including a burst ear drum. One of Andrew's grommets is out of his ear - but has healed very well. At the moment it is just sitting in his ear canal (DC saw something in his ear and paniced, I went down and saw the grommet so all was good) and our dr didn't want to take it out just yet.

I am not going to be very happy if Andrew needs them in again.

How many times has he had them in Becks? When Mercedes had to have the 3rd lot put in he used a special type of grommet called a T-tube which is more resistant to falling out. So resistant in fact that he expects he'll have to surgically remove it in a couple of years .

Just lurking.
Spencer had an ear infection about 7 weeks ago, went to have a tympanogram (sp?) on Friday and the one ear that was infected came out wide and his other ear was totally flat. Nurse said that his hearing will definitely be affected as there was no movement at all in his right ear and the left wasn't all that flash either. He has a cold at the moment so she said that could be the cause, he did seem fine but after the test he started messing with his ear and was grumpy so it must be hurting.
Going back for another test at end of Feb unless we end up at docs before then.
How many infections or bad tympanograms do they tend to let them have before referring to a specialist?

-------------

Sam had an ongoing ear infection for about 3 months before I finally changed doctors and the new one recommended seeing specialist straight away. She was getting them without having had colds etc though. She only had one tympanogram at the doctors and one other when she saw the specialist. Her right ear was completely flat too and the doctor said she would be all but completely deaf in that ear. (like hearing underwater).
I would say if Spencer's ears don't clear up they will refer you on after February. Poor wee boy it is so awful for them having ear infections I hope he feels better really soon.

Oh, I should add an update for us too

Sam has her follow up with the specialist tomorrow, but I would dare to say that things will be looking good. She hasn't touched her ears since the grommets went in, and over the last couple of days her speech is really picking up. Yesterday she said 'giraffe' as well as about 10 other new words.
Oh, and Southern cross have finally agreed to pay for the surgery - Woohoo

Yay southern cross are going to pay for. Why weren't they going to??

Tympanogram's aren't the most usful way of saying if your child is deaf. Andrew has had heaps of them done over his 3 years of ear issues and isn't completely deaf in that ear. He has had a full hearing test done and only a slight hearing lose he has. You will also find that they will say flat when you have grommets in too.

Andrew had 6 ear infections in 5 months that is what pushed me to get him seen.

Southern cross decided in their infinite wisdom that because the specialist used the word 'several' instead of 'couple' when refering to how many months Sam's ear problems had been going on that it was a pre-existing condition. I told them at the time that it wasn't, but they didn't believe us. After a month of sending them every single medical record, plunket record, A&E record etc etc they have finally decided I was telling the truth.
Luckily a friend lent me the money to pay for her surgery at the time - otherwise I don't know what we would have done.

Yay for her increase in language and yay for southern cross paying up too.

I don't think he is deaf, I don't think his hearing is affected at all, but then again I wasn't expecting the test to come out how it did either and I like to know about things so I can go to the doctors armed with information, nothing worse than sitting there having no idea what they are talking about. I'm hoping that it was just bad timing with the test, he was grumpy and pulling at his ear Friday afternoon but has been fine since and his cold has moved to his chest so I'm thinking he was probably just bunged up.
I might take him back for another test sooner as it was only the nurse that said 3 months but that seems like a long time to wait especially if it is affecting his hearing.

3 months is a long time. Andrew was having them weekly for a while. Fingers crossed it was just a bad timed test.

Josh is getting grommets next month!!! Saw the specialist yesterday and he has gule ear in both ears at the moment and that isn't normal for the middle of December. So we will be making a flying visit down to Palmy on the 28 of Jan to get them in.

Just updating we had the grommets put in today. In and out of hospital in less than 4 hours. You wouldn't even know that he had them in the way he is acting (just like normal). So glad that are in and all the fluid (the dr said he took heaps of fluid out of his left ear) is out so that we can have a good winter this year.

Well we may have already lost the left grommet (the bad ear). It is full of blood and a possible infection already and as I can't go and get the script for the drops we are stuck. The dr rang me and we are off to Palmy tomorrow to get the ear properly looked at (the MTC here doesn't have everything we need) and hopefully it is still there just gunk in the way.

Grommet is still in place, he needed a microscope to see it. He removed all the gunk in there and told me that it is infected so we have started on the ($35 ) ear drops, only to find when I came home I had some at home up opened . Josh is feeling good as well.

We're going down this track at the moment for our 9 month old son. Hes had constant ear infection for the last 5-6 weeks. Hes been on 5 back to back antibiotics and STILL has the infection. Saw the ent specialist yesterday and they've put him on the waiting list for grommets. But in the meantime we are to stop the antibiotics and just deal with the pain with nurofen and pamol. Dr said it will probably get worse. She couldn't answer the what then question I had. Said to take him back to the gp and be referred back to the ent. Which will take months probably. Not cool when you have a baby in pain. My boss isn't impressed with the amount of time I've had off with a sick child. I tried to tell him where I was going yesterday and he rolled his eyes and walked away from me when I was mid sentence.

We are back in hospital next Wed with Josh. Grommets back in and tonsillis and aednoids out!!!.

Grommet in his left ear was out and came out of his actual ear in late May, and when we went to the ENT 2 weeks ago he said Josh had fluid in his middle ear already.

So can't wait for this op to happen, I know the next few days after it will be horrid but worth it in the end.

Fallen did they say how long the waiting list is to get them in??

How did it go for Josh?

Sebastian has had two ear infections since I last posted here a month ago. My GP said to call the ENT booking person and see how far down the list he is. It could be anywhere from now till October.

Sebastian is also on the waiting list to have his tear ducts probed. I've asked that they are done at the same time as his grommets rather than having two anesthetics.

I've tried homeopathic medicine to help with the ears. The Weleda ear drops and oral tincture. They haven't helped.
