Im applying for a job for the first time in like 4 years- havent worked for almost 2 1/2 years.
What should I include in the cover letter? How much personal details do u go into? The ad says the job would suit a person with a young family wanting to return to nursing, so should I mention Isla's age etc or is that too much? It says the person will need to work ocassional weekend days and cover staff holidays, and Im fine with that, should I write that too? TIA! |

Yep I reckon you should write Isla's age and that you're happy to work the occasional weekend.... especially cos they mentioned it in the ad.

What else is usually in a cover letter? My mind is blank? There is no contact person, so do I just write To whom is may concern?? Then what??!! |

I pretty much say:
Dear *name is best, but otherwise to whom it may concern is fine* I'm writing to apply for the position of ... I make sure I say why I would be great for the role (as in you are a fab nurse etc) Then I say why I want the job - here is where I'd say about Isla, and working weekends etc. Good luck with the job  ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I ususally write dear sir/madam when I don't know who it is to, and then sign yours faithfully.
Just put that you are writing in regard to the ad for *position*, you think it would suit you ideally as you have the relevant skills (maybe name some) and are looking to return to the work force after being a SAHM to your daughter. That you are able and willing to do some weekend work and then tell them you have enclosed your cv for them to look at. Don't write too much, literally just an introductory paragraph as you don't want to re-write what is in your cv and that is the really important bit. -------------

Hmm it's a bit different but here's what I wrote for my covering letter applying for a teaching job a couple of years ago...
My address Wherever AUCKLAND 18 October 2006 Their address Wherever AUCKLAND To Whom It May Concern; I am writing in regard to the teaching positions available at [the school name] for next year. I am an enthusiastic, innovative and caring Beginning Teacher who is passionate about working with the Year 7/8 age group. I have curriculum strengths in ICT, English and Social Studies – and where possible integrate these together in planning and teaching. I am proficient in using both PC and Apple computers, with extensive experience using iMovie, MovieMaker, Word and PowerPoint. As technology is constantly changing, I flourish in continual learning in this area and highly value the integration of ICT in the classroom. I have knowledge and understanding of how to plan for inquiry based learning, and would value the opportunity to implement this in the classroom. My core beliefs strongly align with that of [the name of the school]. I believe it is vital for students to strive to reach their full potential, and to celebrate various successes together. One thing I do do is write something referring to that workplace. Like this school I wrote about values cos from looking at the website, that was important to that school. Another covering letter had something about cultural diversity cos that was a big part of that school. When you write your cover letter it should focus on your strengths, skills and qualifications. It should also identify key points or words that the employer is looking for from the ad. With your personal info I would mention it becuase the ad is welcoming parents but only briefly. This is a sample that I give to my candidates:
Important key points to keep in mind: · Clean white A4 paper · Black or blue ink · Typewritten unless handwritten is specifically requested · Justify – No indenting of first line of paragraph · No Commas between address details · Arial, Tahoma, Verdana Fonts Only · Size 12 Font Your street address Suburb STATE Postcode (2 lines blank) Date (2 lines blank) Company Name Street Sddress Suburb STATE Postcode (2 lines blank) Dear, their name if available, otherwise use, To Whom It May Concern, RE: Job reference number ONLY if applicable First paragraph should identify which job you are applying for, where you found the ad and when the ad was published if available. Start your letter by saying: I wish to apply for…………… There is no need to say "I am writing to......". Second paragraph should promote any relevant skills and experience you have, or, if you have no experience in this type of role, your enthusiasm to enter a new industry and gain experience/new skills, or any personal attributes you have which may make you particularly suitable for the position. Third paragraph should address specific selection criteria, if necessary: · Qualifications such as industry licences or certificates · Availability for specific shifts – only if job mentions shift work · Use bullet points layout as its easier for the reader and stands out Fourth paragraph should thank the person for reading your application, suggest that you are available for an interview and state that your resume is enclosed/attached. Yup what Rianna said. When you are applying for a role that will have high interest the cover letter should stand out. The recruiters/managers are reading loads and you want to be remembered.
I think it also pays to mention why you want to work for them over any other company and why you want this job. Be enthusiastic as your CV wont show this. Good luck! -------------

having just been through this process covering letters are really important as everyone has said! good luck  -------------
