Just wondering who had a planned c/s and who had an emergency? Would you do an elective C/S for any future children?
When I was pregnant with the girls I knew from the start I wanted a C/S and when I told people that was what I was doing I got mixed reactions from people that had done it. I found people that had emergency situations had the scariest stories to tell whereas women that had planned thier C/S where telling a different story. I was really happy with the outcome of my C/S everthing went smoothly and was great knowing what was coming every step of the way. I am planning on any future bubs being born by C/S. Edited so I don't sound like such an idiot lol! -------------

I had an emergecy .. and I wouldnt "plan" to do it again. That said .. I wouldnt opt for an elective ... (and I am not this time) ... Im going to try to have womble naturally  , I mean my body was built to give birth, so I figure I should give it a shot.
In saying that .. if I happen to require an emergecy cs then thats just the way it goes .. but at least I know I tried 
I just want to feel that empowerment women who birth naturally get (or so I have heard lol) -------------

I had an emergency one too and found it fine my body just took over and went with the flow at the time and i have healed from it well, i think the whole experiance was alot more traumatic for my DH watching on while we had all the intervention and then the CS and not being able to do anything about it where as i just went with it. next time i would like to try naturally but if i need another on whether it be elective or emergency then so be it at the end of the day i just want a happy healthy baby

no-one would ever choose an emergency c section:) mine was scary and awful and healing time was long and awful (as most seem to be due to you and bubs going through labour first)
if there is a next time I will be making plans closer to the time but i think probably elective cs.. with lots of people it depends on why they had cs in the first place.. In my case I just do not want to risk nearly losing him/her again:( ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

I had an emergency c-section first time around, was nearly a month early and baby was taken to special care, while scary and unplanned and not nowing what was happening, I am just very glad that baby was safe and nothing else at the mattered to me. 2nd tine round I was determined to try for a VBAC which was a success (forceps) and then with my 12 stitches was wondering why the hell I had insisted so much!!!!! Am very glad I have had the opportunity to have both sorts of births, but if it had been needed would have once again done anything to have a safe healthy baby. -------------

My baby was breach so I needed to have a c-section. Not really by choice but it was planned.
I would have preferred to give birth naturally and plan to do that next time if I can. I found the c-section to be fine. I mean the actual surgery wasn't so fun but it wasn't bad. I found the healing time to be really quick and I wasn't in any pain afterwards and had no complications whatsoever. |

I've had 2 emergency c-sections but not had an elective before.
To be honest I don't really understand why women want elective c-sections.... I wish so much that I had never had a single c-section EVER. I had an emergency c/s with DD1 and planned VBAC for the DD2 (and subsequent babies). A planned c/s is less scary than VB and especially than emergency c/s when you just presume/hope everything will go to a VB plan. But IMO a VB is much easier recovery, you feel up and on your feet far quicker than with a c/s. I'm glad I have had VBs. In saying that, if my emergency c/s had been because of a small pelvis or something that was likely to recur, I would have stuck with c/s. -------------  |

I had an elective c-section. If I'd really wanted I could have pushed for a natural delivery as the Eimear was head first. However the chances were high that I would have needed an emergency c-sect to deliver Aoife (breech and IUGR) so we went with the doctors recommendation.
Like hila, I found recovery to be quick but I'll still be opting for a VBAC next time if possible. |

i've had one of each...jack was breech so i had an elective. when i was pregnant with charli, i was given the option of another c/s or try a vbac. i was extremely determined to have a vbac, but little madam wasn't going to let me. failed forceps and vonteuse meant an emergency c/s.
while emotionally it's taking ALONG time to heal after my emergency c/s, physically i felt the same after both c/s. even with a large internal tear from charli's birth. my emergency one was alot harder on DH than the elective as i lost ALOT of blood and charli's heartrate was all over the place, so maybe that's one thing to consider. i'm not allowed to try for a VBAC now, so any surprise kids we have, will be elective  ------------- http://www.alternatickers.com">

I hated my emergency C-section. I felt like I failed as a woman not being able to do whats it so natural and that it was not the birth I wanted. I am desperate for a vbac, and do worry how I will cope if I end up with another section! It's horrible feeling that way, I have come to terms with my first section and I think it effected me more once DD was older, I never had bonding or BF issues thank goodness.
Everyone says its easier to get over an elective section or 2nd time round section but i'm not convinced, lol! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I had an emergecny c section after a 2 day induction, attmpted ventouse, 2 horus pushing that led to zero movement on her part. I had no problem with it.
We aren't planning anymore kids, but if i was to have another, unless everything was favourable for a VBAC (size of baby, postition, plus all those other little signs) I wouldn't even contemplate it. i am more than happy to have an elective, thatis what i would go for. -------------

I had an elective c-section due to medical reasons. Mine was booked in when I was 16 weeks pregnant with Lucian.
If I have any other children, I must have an elective c-section. I'm not allowed to give birth naturally due to the number of surgeries I've had on my uterus when I was a teenager. I think the only scary thing that happened during my c-section was the insertion of the combo spinal/epidural. They had to give me 5 doses of local. Then during the c-section itself, I had to have a total of 3 doses put through the epidural line as I was gaining feeling and movement too fast. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I had an emergency after 24 hours of active labour, worst thing was the epidural was too high or something and I could still feel the baby pressing on my nerves in my bum, (little toad turned posterior 12 hrs into labour) which meant i felt a great need to go to the toilet but wasn't allowed off the bed. i was in agony for 10 hours and cause the toad was perfectly happy in there they held off for ages before making a decision.
Next time I'll probably to do a VBAC cause the surgeon has written in my notes that there is no reason for me not to. I'm a little bit sad about my c-section cause the whole 9 months I worried about giving birth cause I didn't know what it would be like, and since I still haven't, next time I will still worry about it. ------------- http://www.alterna-tickers.com">

i had an emergency even tho we wanted one in the first place and werent allowed to choose - YES i'll have another no hesitation. I had no problem bonding or anything so yea. I had and still have mega PND, but its not got anything to do with me failing. (a week of labour on and off and 2 failed inductions) Who cares. I had an emergency c-section after 72 hours of labour (none of the start-stop kind either... so no breaks OR sleep!) and the rushing and panicking that followed (DS heartrate was going far below normal while monitoring during latter stage of labour, and by the time he was out, had an APGAR of nil, he was rushed to NICU before I even got a glimpse of him, and I didnt 'meet' him until he was 24+ hours old) had me terrified of possibly going through it all again... wasnt until I met DP and did some asking around and discovered that I 'may' be able to have an elective that I finally agreed to TTC... I am now back to being scared of what may happen during labour and birth as everyone seems to expect me to go for a VBAC, even tho the whole thing has me scared from the get-go. I got my notes from the hospital that did my c-section, and as there was no known reason (even though I have my suspicions) for DS to go into foetal distress, or for labour to be so prolonged... the ob put in my notes that I would be an ideal candidate for Trial Of Scar labour... I really dont think I will cope with going into labour, and knowing theres a chance of it all happening that way again. I would much rather have the elective, and know that things will go a lot less rushed and panicked at the end of the day. ------------- Brandon - 05/12/2003

| I will be going for an elective - although I don't have a lot of choice. Because of the twins being in the same sac and nothing separating them, there's far too much danger of their cords getting tangled. If I had the choice, I would try for a VB, however I don't, so as long as they get here happy and healthy then I'm happy with that. |

I had an emergency c section. Waters broke naturally but not much happened so was put on the drip the next morning, all good to 5cm then he turned the wrong way and flicked his head back and got stuck ... so they had to give me an epidural and we "tried" for many hours but nothing was happening with him in that position, so 30 hours after my waters had broken, with bub starting to get a little distressed, I had an emergency c section.
This time I'm not sure if I will have the option to try to VBAC or not .... but I may possibly opt for an elective either way, as I don't want to go through that again. Even though I cried all the way to theatre as I really didn't want a c section (and felt dissappointed that I couldn't do it naturally), now that I've had one and it wasn't so bad I'm not sure if I want to do it the other way!!   ------------- DS (5yrs) and DD (3yrs) |

Yup, having done it once and it wasn't the nightmare I was expecting I was happy either way, but was pushing more for VBAC. Afterwards with more stitches than I had with my CS I wondered why I had pushed so hard for my VBAC....but i'm still glad Idid. -------------

I had a planned C-sect due to Rowan being breech and IUGR and it was a lovely birth experience.
I am still undecided about whether to do a VBAC or elective-C next time. I probably won't have any medical reason for a C but given that it was such a positive experience for me (laughing with the OB and DH, bonding with Rowan straight away, relatively easy recovery) I worry that should I persue a VBAC then when the going gets tough I may just lose my determination and end up having to have an emergency-C which of course would take a lot more to recover from. Also if the next baby is IUGR I'd far rather have an elective C than be induced which increases the chance of rupture. -------------

I'm totally with you Bobbie I really enjoyed my experience and had no problems with bonding. I was terrified with twins that I would push one out and then they would have to do an emergency c-section for the second baby so I knew from the start I wanted a c-section and no-one was going to tell me any different. All said and done it was all so easy and positive. -------------

I'm so envious of you all who had great birth experiences..i didn't really have a birth plan or many expectations but the whole experience (well the first bit till he got distressed was ok) was hard and he wasn't breathing and then i had an awful recovery.. so i guess if we are ever lucky enough to be preg again I would go elective as I don't want to risk that again. ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

Isobel was feet first so after 24 hrs contractions we had an emergency c section.
Got a nasty infection spent 2 weeks in hospital plus another month of district nurse visits. Not fun! If we are lucky enough to get pregnant again in the future will be hoping for a vbac surgeon said it was possible. However will do whatever to ensure happy healty baby! |
